MIKE PATTON Says FAITH NO MORE Reunion Has 'Sort Of Petered Out' - Jan. 7, 2013
In a brand new interview with Believer magazine, FAITH NO MORE singer Mike Patton was asked if the band's reunion was "still happening." He replied: "It's sort of petered out. We're also maybe a little too conscious for our own good. Meaning there's a lineage of bands that maybe did some nice things and then needed the cash and got back together and basically just sprayed diarrhea over their entire body of work. We're very worried about that. We don't want to overdo it.”

Speaking to IHeartGuitarBlog.com last November, Patton stated about the possibility of FAITH NO MORE releasing any live material from the band's reunion tours: "Right now, we have no plans whatsoever — live, recording or anything. We've done what we set out to do with the reunion, and it's all great, but it's just, 'Let's see what happens next.' And I think you need to take a pause to actually reflect on something like that, because otherwise we could just keep playing, and we're very conscious of overdoing it, y'know, milking material that's so old. You can only do that for so long, and I feel that we've done pretty well. The whole band's naturally came to this conclusion, so now we're just sitting tight."

According to Patton, one of the reasons the FAITH NO MORE reunion didn't happen sooner is the fact that they wanted to avoid making it feel like a nostalgia thing — like "Here's FAITH NO MORE again." "We wanted it to feel fresh and still somehow vital," he said. "It wasn't an money grab. It's funny to say, but we all kind of reconnected, and after quite a long time we all kinda looked at each other and were like, 'Man, we actually spent half of our lives together.' It's interesting to see it through that set of glasses as opposed to the ones you wore back then. I suppose, at least personally speaking, I've grown up a lot since then, and I think I approach the music differently, and I felt better about the music than I did then."

FAITH NO MORE made a comeback in June 2009 with a headlining performance at the Brixton Academy in London, England and has played sporadic shows for the past three years.

FAITH NO MORE's last LP, "Album Of The Year", came out in 1997.

When bands decide to reunite and come in with all of these rules and limits they are bound to fail.

There are only so many ways a reunion can work.

Reunite for the money
Reunite to record new music
Reunite to celebrate their back catalog also known as the nostalgia tour.

otherwise what's left?

Sounds like to me their management is failing them or some of the guys within the band just aren't interested in pushing forward and thus the band is at a standstill.

They were once a great band and they sounded great during their reunion.

But bands break up for a reason..... and when they reunite they remember why they broke up in the first place....

Great Band either way....

If they wanted it to feel 'fresh and vital' they should have released some new music.

It sucks that the only official concert footage of them is from The Real Thing tour.

FNM should make a new CD. Yes they toured a few years ago and all, but fans want music.

Ordinarily I would agree with Mike about shitting all over your legacy. But this is one of the few bands that came back like they never left. They sound incredible live. They were the best that I had ever seen them on the reunion tour. Just fantastic.

I respect their wants but they should know these few things:

1) You sound fucking killer. That's it, I'm not gonna sit here and wax poetic on your taint.

2) The music scene seriously needs bands such as yourselves who stretch boundaries and sound great doing it. Anyone can bang on some riffs. You write beautiful songs.

3) IMO you have never put out a shitty record. So the reality is we as fans have no idea what a shitty FNM sounds like. If you see what I'm saying here...

Thanks for that amazing night!

Terrible live band. Much better on record anyway. Hopefully Mike Bordin will return to Ozzy's band.

I think it's more like "We just want to be really really careful not to over... oh, the offer is TEN MILLION now? Yeah, we'd love to keep playing as long as it's for the right reasons". By making it sound like playing together isn't all that important, they're just upping their fees. Plain and simple.

from interviews over recent years, the only member of the band who really wants to make a new album, is Billy Gould. He seems to really want to do it. But from what I gather, Roddy and especially Mike, are the main guys who are stubborn about making any new material.

I really want new FNM material, but if not all the members have their heart in making new music with the band, then it's better that they don't. I'd rather they didn't make a new album, than make one that is a half hearted effort. It's a shame that Bill seems to be the only guy in the band who has the fire to make new FNM music.

Pfft. Some reunion. A bunch of Jim Martin-less shows in Europe and South America and only 1 show in the States, and it wasn't even in SF.

Dude they played the Warfield in San Fran in 2010. Not only that but a one-off reunion with Chuck Mosley that very night. Where the fuck were you?

And also let's not forget they played New York I think twice and Philadelphia. I wasn't a math guy growing up but I believe that is more than just 1 show in the US.

But I'll agree they could've spent a little more time touring places other than the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the US. I know there's gotta be some people in the Midwest who are sorta disappointed, who also maybe never caught them back in their prime.

I'm not a total FNM The Real Thing/Angel Dust purist having liked the Mosely & King For A Day/Album of the Year material ...but.... it would be interesting to hear them with Jim Martin's riffs ... it's like Ozzy getting Jake E. Lee. You just know it would be great music. Actually, I like what Iron Maiden did so it would be nice to hear both Spruance & Martin together ... wishful thinking.

No FNM did NOT tour the entire U.S. It was only show in SELECT markets and there was only a handful of them. Everyone plays in fucking LA, that doesn't make it a tour.

This band could do no wrong. Make a NEW fucking record. I like the way they went with Jon Hudson. I STILL fuckin rock that album. You are spraying shit by not doing anything

Neural Imbalance said it DEAD FUCKING ON. The world needs FNM NOW

sold out in most places almost instantly. I wonder how much they were offered to reform the first time? I recall Patton saying that he wouldn't do it unless the money was right, and at that point the band had already turned down a high 6 figure offer. So either they were offered a shitload of money, or a few of the other guys were desperate or something. but i'm guessing it was a _lot_ of money.

If they make a new album, cool. If they don't, who cares. It's not like AOTY was all that great anyway.

FNM have always gone their own way and done their own thing and that's not about to change.

Yeah new music would be great but if they're not feeling it? They ain't going to do it. That's the FNM we know and love right there.

You know damn well it was a money thing, why not admit it. There's nothing wrong with needing money and using people's nostalgia to procure it. As long as you did a good show, then it's win/win.

Most halt-assed reunion ever. Lame without Martin for sure, but as I never got to see the original run I would've looked past that if they had played ONE FRIKKIN SHOW in the midwest. Sorry but if you're an American band and you don't AT LEAST play Chicago then you're just disrespecting your fans.

I want some new FNM......BAD!!! How could it not be phenom!?!

This is one of my favorite bands of all time. They did whatever the fuck they wanted, and it always sounded badass....regardless of style. They always pulled it off.

I was into them back in the We Care Alot days, and even though Chuck wasn't all that, it still worked! Patton took them to the next level, and is very eccentric, and kind of a prick sometimes (who isn't) but you cannot deny his genius.

We'll sing and dance
And we'll find romance
And we'll stroll to the edge of the world!!

As my favorite band for quite some years, and not having had the chance to see them live, I think it's sad it's over so soon. While I do think it's a good call to let it be if not everyone's in it, especially since I think Album of the Year is more than a fine ending of their career, I still really liked the new song they performed live and would love a new album. But a new album would kind of "need" Jim Martin, because it wasn't as good without his trademark metal riffs.

Mike Patton is a very down to earth person despite his quite obscure musical endeavors. He is very intelligent and pushes the envelope musically, but has a normal guy kinda character. He understands the reality of it all and therefore will be happy with any decisions they make because they will not be making those decisions in haste.

Jim Martin is a guitar god. Period. If you have not heard "Milk and Blood" hunt down a copy, you will not be disappointed. Aside from the Metallica reunion shows the last time I saw Mr. Martin he was playing with his solo band at a small bar on Haight St. and there were about a dozen folks in attendance. The time before that was a hardcore matinee show at the Cocadrie when Jim was in FANG - one of the first versions Sammytown put together after his release from prison. H2O and another band or two from NYC were also on the bill and for an afternoon show it was a violent stew of skinheads, punks and metalheads. Jim and FANG crushed!
That being said I also think that Faith No More put out an excellent album after Jim left in "King for a Day..." and after that their final record was just okay. However they still delivered live on the tours supporting those two records and I was pleasantly surprised that they carried on so well without Martin.
When the reunion was rumored I just assumed that Jim would not participate and this was confirmed by his statement. I was lucky enough to attend all three Warfield shoes and each was an EVENT! From the choices of opening bands to the cabaret style second acts (cheerleaders and trannies?!?) with Neil Hamburger adding his style of comedy(?) to the proceedings each night turned into a unique piece of art that captured the spirit of the San Francisco Alt Rock scene of the 80s and early 90s.
FNM played three different sets with surprises ranging from an extra encore on the first night nearly 10 minutes after the house lights had come on and a good majority of the crowd had left to the Chuck Mosely set on the final night. The band was in top form and for a while it looked like there might be a rebirth in the works.
As the reunion tour marched on in fits and spurts and new material from Patton and his side projects emerged along with a new Imperial Teen record it became evident that if there was to be a new FNM studio record it was some time off. And that was okay.
The band need to do things on their own terms and at their own pace. I think the decision to avoid the cash in that bands like Soundgarden are doing is to be applauded. It is a compliment to the fans and makes the FNM legacy and reunion all that more special and important.
I'll be excited for a new record if it happens but I'll be just as excited if we hear nothing from the band until the next batch of reunion shows in 2017.
