Ex-BLACK SABBATH Singer TONY MARTIN Talks New Solo Album, SILVER HORSES Project - Jan. 7, 2013
Dan Swinhoe of SabotageTimes.com recently conducted an interview with former BLACK SABBATH singer Tony Martin. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On the reissue of BLACK SABBATH's "Eternal Idol" album, his recorded debut with the band:

Tony: "I was not a writer on 'Eternal Idol', I was just a session singer for that album. So I would not be included in the release [process] of that."

On how he looks back on the experience of being in BLACK SABBATH:

Tony: "I am 10 years younger than those guys and our circles didn't really cross, so it was a bit isolating. It doesn't mean I hated the experience; I was just completely inexperienced and they didn't have the time or the inclination to really accommodate that. It felt like they just wanted my voice and writing ability."

On his upcoming solo album, "Book Of Shadows", which is around two thirds done:

Tony: "'Book Of Shadows' got put on hold, of course, because it's a solo album and solo albums are the worst because you are too close to it and it's never perfect. But apart from that, you still have to pay the bills and so I do other projects too, and that takes me away from the solo album. But I do intend to have all those re-recorded and released."

On the SILVER HORSES project, which features Tony alongside Gianluca Galli on guitar, Andrea Castelli on bass and Matteo "Bona" Bonini and drums and was described by Tony as "beautiful bluesy stuff, a kind of LED ZEPPELIN thing":

Tony: "SILVER HORSES is dead in the water right now. It turned nasty because they tried to release it without having the rights and contracts in place, and we are fighting over the way forward. As things are, we don't have a release, but we are still working on it and maybe we can recover it, but it doesn't feel the same now."

The Martin era Sabbath is vastly underrated. Some great stuff can be found on albums like Headless Cross , TYR , The Eternal Idol , Cross Purposes , Not all of Forbidden though. A song or two only. Good interview by Tony. Good to hear from him again. Look forward to any new solo music & a tour too. Best of luck \m/

Tony Martin was on some of Sabbath's best albums. Too bad he's not making music with them anymore.

I was lucky enough to be able to see Black Sabbath on their Headless Cross Tour in Philly in 1989. The U.S. tour consisted of about 12 dates that the band could actually play. Suffering from poor promotion and a lack of U.S. album sales, Sabbath was sadly ignored in the States. Tony Martin was fantastic at that Tower Theatre show. He was great singing both the Ozzy and Dio eras, as well as 5 songs from Headless Cross. Cozy Powell really put a ton of effort into trying to resurrect Black Sabbath from the grave. R.I.P. Cozy.

Wholeheartedly agree. I saw them in NY on that tour. Tony did a great job. Martin era Black Sabbath was WAY underrated. I'd rather drop $25-30 to see them at a smaller venue with Tony, than 5-10 times that amount to see Ozzy stumble around the stage.

killer material.....I bought it in a cheap CD bin for $3.00 many years ago and if you've never listened to it check it out; it is an outstanding album !! Tony's a hugely under rated singer IMHO

Headless Cross and The Eternal Idol are probably in my top 10 Sabbath albums. First 6 Ozzys, 2 Dio's, 2 Martins. With Born Again & Seventh Star for the top 12.

Headless Cross is fucking kick ass true Sabbath record. Fucking killer Geezer Butler bass riffs since Vol. 4! Loved it the first time I heard it, love it still! The best Tony Martin era Black Sabbath music. Forbidden was bad (I can say that in all honesty as a hardcore Sab fan) TYR isn't that great and let's face it, Eternal Idol was killer too but it's not Tony's work. I'd pick the Ray version of that album as it should've been that way.

Tony Martin is an awesome bloke!

TM was sensational until he blew out his voice during the Cross Purposes tour from which he never recoverd. Exceptionally talented and apears to be a genuinely nice human being who experienced some very hard knocks in the music industry. Love his work, but most unfortunately, his flawless live performance days are long past. I still buy everything he makes as he is a true talent. He could not front Sabbath again simply because he could not cut it night after night live. Was hoping that his recent one off Headless Cross gig would be cut into a DVD. Was hoping from some bootleg footage of the show on YouTube....aaagh, just hoping. Looks like Sharon put the kabosh on the release of the Headless Cross gig...

Agree 100% He was never the same after that CP tour.. Dig up some youtube footage from 1989 -1990. His voice was absolutely amazing.
