DREAM THEATER Begins Work On New Album - Jan. 6, 2013
Progressive metal giants DREAM THEATER are preparing to begin work on the follow-up to 2011's "A Dramatic Turn Of Events". The band's guitarist, John Petrucci, has posted several photos of the DREAM THEATER studio along with the caption, "Let the fun begin…"

In an interview with Metal Insider conducted early last month, Petrucci stated about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the next DREAM THEATER CD: "So far it's not very developed at all. We're scheduled to go into the studio in January… We have a handful of ideas we compiled while we were on the road, and we have those archived. And since I got back from the road, and have had some time off, I've been spending more time compiling, writing and demoing some things. There are a bunch of seeds, a bunch of ideas, and a definite direction. Everybody is hired, the studio is locked, and the vision for the type of album has been talked about and secured. The only thing that's not there is the main material, but we'll go in January full force."

He added: "Before we go into an album, I like to sit down and think about what we're going to do instead of just going in and winging it. I'll usually come up with some sort of proposal, and we'll talk about it a bunch of times over the course of the month, and get everyone on the same page. This way, people can start to think about musical ideas in that direction, and get in the right headspace. For me, it makes everything so much clearer when you're in the studio. If you have a direction and a goal, you get better results."

Asked if drummer Mike Mangini — who replaced Mike Portnoy in 2010 — will be more involved in the making of the new record than he was in "A Dramatic Turn Of Events", Petruci said: "Yes. For the last album, he wasn't involved in the writing. We wrote it without him for 2 ½ months, and he came in and tracked. This time, he's going to be in from day one, so we'll write together as a full group. The tapes that we have from doing that a bit on the road have been incredible. At soundcheck, if I'd come in with an idea and we'd start jamming on it, he was really quick and had great creative concepts. I think it's going to be a very cool experience."

Regarding a possible release date for the new DREAM THEATER album, the guitarist said: "I'm not sure. We're on the same schedule as 'A Dramatic Turn Of Events', meaning that we entered the studio at the same time to work on that album, and it didn't come out until September. It's too early to tell if it will follow the same release schedule. By the time we're done, writing, recording, mixing, mastering, it could be May-ish, and then we hit the summer festival season in Europe around July or so, it'll probably be a similar schedule."

DREAM THEATER's next CD will be released through te Roadrunner, with whom the band re-signed last fall. DREAM THEATER first joined forces with Roadrunner in January 2007 and has so far released three critically acclaimed albums with the label. Roadrunner issued DREAM THEATER's ninth studio LP, "Systematic Chaos", in 2007 and went on to release "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" in 2009 as well as "A Dramatic Turn Of Events".

Really?!! Even worse than people who hate Dream Theater so much that they look for articles that are about Dream Theater so that they can make retarded comments about how much they hate Dream Theater and all of Dream Theater's fans?

Ok then...I guess I'd do stupid shit like that too if I couldn't find anything better to do with my time.

All I hope for this one is they'll try something new, ADTOE was way too safe and - in my opinion - for the most part... uninspired. One of the things that struck me is how lifeless the verses and choruses were, almost to the point of becoming 'too standard' for a band like Dream Theater. Will cautiously await what they come up with next.

I'm willing to bet that most Dream Theater haters haven't heard a lot of their material. They offer so much more than just 'noodling'.

Last record was too polished. Drums were great but not fantastic. Hopefully they'll get heavier and it'll give Mike a chance to shine on this one.

I liked it far more than the ones before. I'd like to see them try some new things in a more progressive way again, although definitely NOT in the sense of the recent "progressive" metal with crap like Periphery and Co. with the laughable teen growling stuff...

I think I'll just pass and buy the next Symphony X and Fates Warning album instead.

While these guys have been declining and living on drama, Symphony X and Fates Warning/Arch/Matheos have put out some of metal's best albums, period. No genres to limit them to, just great METAL.

the last album was by far the best whole album front to back since Scenes, but maybe even as good as their first couple records. The melodies and James singing are highlights. His voice got so much better than the last few releases. Mike's drumming was great, but lower in the mix. Maybe this was done to counter the overly loud drumming that Portnoy had in previous mixes. It depends what kind of stereo you play it on. On a high fi home system the drums sound good and only a tad quiet in some songs. On a shitty car stereo it sounds worse.

Now all they need to do is self edit a bit more, remove some of the cheesy keyboard nerdy parts, and they could make a masterpiece.

because the last cd was lame. And it had nothing to do with Portnoy's absence, though mangini is a (slight) downgrade.

great band and the reason people hate them is exactly the reason their fans love them. and talking about DT not trying new stuff?? they are always doing new stuff instead of some simple pop/rock songs, especially on the charts when some new rock bands or whatever comes along gets big 1-2 songs an album people will tell its so new and cool while their are usually bands thats have been doing the same stuff many times better for many years.

its good we have bands like Dream Theater that are not afraid to things their way and use their talent isntead of wasting it on simple songs, we have enough people doing that and i like a lot of those bands but its good to have all kinds of bands, prog, rock, industrial, punk or whatever you wanna call it.

and you maybe you don't like Dream Theater thats ok but you can't say they are bad, because they are a great band even if you like it or not.

DT was one of my top 5 bands up to Metropolis Scenes of a Memory, great record but the following ones are so boring... except for Octavarium, especially Six Degrees and Train of Thought, damn those albums suck I had to sell the CDs 1 buck each

i think their last album was incredible. Train of though started a lack of inspiration, followed by octavarium, and i personally think Systematic Chaos is their worst album. They somehow did something with Black clouds, but their last one was really again about great melodies and better songs. the songs again had a direction, contrary to those three albums that somehow sound like jamming recordings with some ideas over there. Can´t wait to see where theyre going now.
