GODSMACK's SULLY ERNA: 'Who's Going To Dwarf METALLICA?' - Jan. 5, 2013
Mitch Lafon of "Dropping The Needle " podcast recently conducted an interview with GODSMACK frontman Sully Erna. A couple of excepts from the chat follow below.

Dropping The Needle: You've referred to "Avalon" as ‘the' project. Is this the only time you'll do a solo album or do you see yourself doing more in the future? If yes, would it be similar music?

Erna: I'm pretty sure it will be [different]. I don't know if it will be "Avalon" again. It took on its own life and, although, I am writing new music I'm not sure what direction it will go in. I didn't know what direction I was going in when I wrote "Avalon". I was just writing music and the songs that stuck and sounded attractive we kept working on. The songs that weren't growing legs we tossed in the trash and kept moving on, so this is the collection of music we came up with. I think we'll approach it the same way this time. I'm not even sure I'll work with all the members, but I'm pretty sure I'll work with most of them because they are just so talented and multi-instrumentalist. They're just really great players and I know I can get anything I want from them [in terms of musicality]. I don't know how it's going to sound. It could be more stripped down and cleaner like an Adele-styled record or it could be more composed and orchestrated like "Avalon". It's hard to say. What I do know is that what worked well for us with "Avalon" is that it was a curveball, for the most part, and it wasn't what people expected me to do coming from GODSMACK. With that being said, I want them to not expect this to be another "Avalon" record. Hopefully surprise them again with something a little from left field.

Dropping The Needle: Let's talk GODSMACK. What's going on with the band? Is there a new album coming soon?

Erna: We're just taking a break. We just finished a two-year cycle, so we're going to lay low for a little bit and give it a break. We'll contact each other at sometime near the end of 2013 and talk about when it's right to do another record, but right now we're taking a hiatus to rest and hang out with our families and friends. I'm going to work on some solo stuff and I might dabble in some TV and movie opportunities… Work on me for awhile.

Dropping The Needle: On GODSMACK's "Live & Inspired" album, you covered METALLICA's "Nothing Else Matters" and, of course, in 2004 you opened for METALLICA on tour. What does that band mean to you?

Erna: They are the kings of metal. They've been such a huge inspiration to me and my life. Not only for their music, but as a frontman. I learned so much from James Hetfield, Steven Tyler and all the great frontman out there… When I was transforming from drummer to singer and not really knowing what to do and how to perform and get it together; I had to learn and figure it out. I made a lot of mistakes and some things didn't work. Some things came together, but over the years I feel that GODSMACK has been able to become a great live band because of a lot of the people that we've honored as childhood heroes and METALLICA is right up there on the top of the list. I couldn't think of a better group of people. Those guys just treated us amazing. They were so cool with us. They didn't limit our sound, our lights, our pyro or whatever. They were like, "Bring it on and don't worry about us; you are not going to dwarf us." I was like, "Fucking A, man — that's the shit." You couldn't ask for a better group of people than that. Hetfield and all of them were just super… Probably the nicest guys that I've ever met in my life.

Dropping The Needle: It must be nice to work with a band that isn't trying to sabotage you.

Erna: Who's going to dwarf METALLICA? Bands at that level— RUSH, AEROSMITH, METALLICA and all that — are the cooler people. It's the mid-level bands that sometimes have more of an ego. These guys are set. They know that they have their millions of fans. They know that back in the day this is what is used to be. It was all about the headliner and the opening band putting on a great show. It wasn't about trying to squash somebody and making yourself look like the best. People are there to see and hear music and they [METALLICA] just want both bands to put on a great show. It was the first time since I started touring on a national level that I was able to go back to playing in arenas with two bands and selling them out every night. It was really awesome to be part of that. We were into the Family Values tours, Ozzfests and all that where it took seventeen bands to sell out a shed. Here we were with METALLICA; we played the whole world with them. Two bands on a stage in an arena and we blew it out every night. So, fuck…

Wow-I'm not a huge fan of Sully, usually, but he makes some great points. And yes, there's no way in hell the 'smack could ever even attempt to dwarf the mighty MetallicA!

That would be a hell of a tour...the kings...Aerosmith, Rush & Metallica. They'd need a minimum of 6 hours, so the show would start at 4PM.

Except Iron Maiden. Metallica are great, just nowhere near "number 1", at least haven't been in a LONG time... MANY bands can dwarf them, at least in their current state.

The days of bands that become institutions in our culture and last for decades are going to be over once this generation of giants retires. All that will be left are the here today gone tomorrow 15 minutes of fame variety. At least we'll have our CDs to remember the greats by.

I must agree, no matter how hard you try to look into the horizon to see who is/are going to take over once these great bands retire, it's empty, but full of Paramores and Nickelbacks at the same time. Like you said at least we will have the music and videos to remember how things were done right.

You are correct. FAR from being the best metal band ever. I'll bring back my old argument as to why they are the most popular metal band in America... they have "Metal" in their name... the first to actually have it in their name over here, thus that's how we tend to think over here. Sad, and VERY true...

Truth. Case in point: I tried creating a Spotify station based on Metallica. EVERYTHING played was radio-friendly nu metal/new rock alternative. Then I created one based on Megadeth. Everything was metal, none of it "nu".

may be the "biggest" band on earth. That's true. But Lars and company are not the best band on Earth. That title was given up when the black album was released, at least for me it was.

Sully, never confuse bigger for better. I think I could name 25 bands off the top of my head that won't "dwarf" (sorry Lars) 'tallica. But are easily better bands by the mere fact that the music is so much of a higher quality than 'tallicas.

Still waiting for that album that "dwarfs" RTL or MOP. Which will never happen. Death Magnetic was as close they could get, and that album was at best mediocre.

Seriously..........What is wrong with people like you who think like this????

Music is created from life perspectives(usually). It usually captures a moment in time for a musician. Your never going to get another MOP or RTL from Metallica.

On top of that what do you really expect from bands??? Most would agree they released 5 great albums. Most bands have a hard time putting out 1. Name me one god damn band in the world that everything they released over decades was master pieces. It doesn't fucking happen. Most successful bands at the end of there career are lucky to have 2 albums to call there master pieces. Considering Metallica has 5 is pretty god damn special.

What you're(and others) trying to sell is a fantasy at best.

I'd also love for you too list 25 bands better then Metallica that have been around the block. Releasing one or two albums doesn't really count. Don't sit here and try to compare band "X" best album to Metallica's Load or whatever. Compare the best to the best.

In a perfect world, Overkill album sales beat the shit out of Metallica every day. Sixteen studio albums, and not one of them a dud. Talk place and time for a musician all you want, but when a group of fifty-somethings can put out an album like The Electric Age that stands proudly alongside their early recordings, I call bullshit on the notion that Metallica just "aren't the same guys anymore" or whatever. They could do it, they've just fed themselves their own delusions of grandeur since the Black album, and will never come back down to Earth as far as their music goes.

If you listen to what they've said in interviews, James, Kirk, and Lars all think Death Magnetic was a blistering thrash album that proved to the world they could still write music like the old days. Like I said...delusions of grandeur.

but rock n roll in general sounds dated. The whole genre and its zillions of styles are becoming like jazz now... music for boring people living in the past. There's nothing fresh coming out, it all sounds the fucking same... that's why the classic bands will never die, because rock fans cling on to them like an old lady to a biker. I personally think it's disgusting. The day they all cease to exist, there needs to be a shift in attention from the rock fans to the younger bands, otherwise that will be the final step to rock becoming what jazz is now... they even teach rock n roll in some music schools... it became institutionalized... that's how lame rock is. It even has a fucking museum... You don't see hip hop lessons at music schools... that's because that shit still sounds fresh, for better or worse.

I will love rock n roll forever, but these "big bands" need to die already, so that the attention (and much needed support) can finally shift to the younger generation, to inspire those bedroom rockers to get off their asses and maybe become the next Metallica, or whatever...

but since it's more faddish and dependent on technology, it's more likely to 'progress'. It's also a younger genre too, which certainly helps.

Rock and metal failed to reinvent themselves in the mainstream after the fall of nu-metal and emo. There hasn't been anything new since, at least not in terms of genres or 'movements'. Of course things are always happening underground, but i think rock and metal need a commercial presence too.

A lot of it has to do with age too. I'm far less interested in hearing new rock and metal bands that i used to be in my 20's, but i still check them out, only to be disappointed the majority of the time.

Regardless, rock hasn't been 'cool' for a while. That's undeniable.

Actually, Metallica's sound guy DOES kill the sound for opening bands intentionally.

Heard it straight from an opener's stage manager's mouth a few years ago. Said the guys in the band are amazingly nice guys and it's not their doing. I'm willing to bet they aren't even aware, but it sure does occur. I asked the guy in the context of "wow, wtf are they doing to your sound?" When I was against the barricade.

Avalon is 100% what I expected from Sully when it was announced he was working on solo material..... I don't know why he always acts like it was so unexpected and so out of the blue what he did on it.

I expected softer, acoustic-y, tribal sounding, moody, piano stuff. Exactly that. And that's what he put out.

what the fuck are talking about? there are a lot of fresh young bands out there doing good things, yea they use influence from lot of great bands. and what is so fresh about the bands on the charts today??? tell me that???? is it fresh using autotunes and sounding like a robot??? and not even playing the music???? is that so fresh?????
even realy old bands like Deep Purple and Black Sabbath are still making music thats fresher and better then these talentless hacks.
but still every bands is just fresh on the first album, but that doesnt mean the rest is shit, it goes in circles but the bands that start some movement are usually the best and usually the bands that sell fewest albums, Ramones a great example

I don't think you understood my point. I'm not arguing whether or not today's music is "better" than old music, that's subjective discussion which I'm not interested in; I'm just saying that for whatever reason (lack of fan enthusiasm for new music, lack of quality, lack of promotion or whatever), no new band has been able to get rock n roll out of this state of staleness.

That title belongs to PANTERA. Just because Dime passed does not mean the music that they wrote was erased! And I saw PANTERA 2 times headlining their own tour in "sheds", or out door amphitheaters, and it was either sold out or close to it. So, the last time I checked Pantera had no problem filling ANY venue they booked. If Vinnie and Phil would bury the hatchet for 6 months and did a Pantera reunion tour they would sell out every major venue WORLD WIDE, even without dime!

I saw Pantera in 97 Headlining on the great southern trend kill tour with White Zombie, Deftones and Eyehategod opening for them in Indy and guess what....it was sold out. I saw Metallica at the same amphitheater headlining Lollapalooza after dropping a "Load" and guess what....it wasn't sold out. Saw Pantera in 2000 at Ozzfest in Indy Headlining on what would be their last tour guess what?....sold out show. That is all beside the point, Pantera never went soft and Metallica went so low as to record country songs for load... what the fuck about that is metal?

Tell that to Jay Z (and his spouse, Beyonce, who basically are the most powerful figures in today's music industry), P Diddy, 50 Cent, Eminem, Dr. Dre or all the producers behind Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Pink, Katy Perry, and a long etc.... I'm not gonna keep dropping names because they make me sick... and please refer to these people's net worth if you'd like to get chronic diarrhea through your mouth for a week...
