FORBIDDEN Has Probably 'Seen Its Last Days As A Recording Band,' Says Guitarist - Jan. 3, 2013
San Francisco Bay Area metallers FORBIDDEN have "likely seen [their] last days as a recording band," according to their guitarist, Craig Locicero. "[Drummer] Sasha [Horn] and [guitarist] Steve [Smyth] came through like champs last year when we had every intention to write and record our next record," he continues. "We started working on some INSANELY cool stuff! But alas, real life stepped in. Matt [Camacho, bass] has retired from music and Russ [Anderson, vocals] simply has no fire or desire to do the work it takes to get back to relevancy. It is a tough road; ask DEATH ANGEL. But they committed to it and I commend them. Russ just does not have the fire at his stage of life. I must respect that."

FORBIDDEN's latest album, "Omega Wave", was released in Europe on October 22, 2010 and in North America on October 26, 2010 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD landed at position No. 27 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

Locicero is currently focusing all his attention on SPIRALARMS, the San Francisco Bay Area-based heavy rock band also featuring Tim Narducci (ex-SYSTEMATIC) on vocals, Chris "Cornbread" Lombardo on bass, Brad Barth on keyboards, Anthony Traslavina on rhythm guitar and Ron Redeen (THE ESSENESS PROJECT) on drums.

SPIRALARMS' sophomore album, "Freedom", will be released later in the year.

This news totally sucks. Omega Wave was a killer record. Saw them open for Overkill a few years ago on their Ironbound tour, Forbidden slayed live! Hopefully they will change their minds soon.

I totally understand, it is hard to have love for something if you don't feel it loves you back. I am not sure Forbidden can make a decent living doing this anymore. In your 40's a tour bus can be total shit day after day. Especially for those unrewarded for their work.

But I hope he understands the lives that he has been a part of through the years. How many people they made so very fn excited and happy. This band is not a blip on the Metal radar.

Why can't you still do albums and limited touring? There's no reason that Russ and Matt couldn't do studio albums and limited appearances, or then take out someone like DiGiorgio (or hell, just get him in the band!). And get Paul back in the band.

And if that doesn't work, why not start something new with Mean Gene, Stevie D and Smyth, Craig?

At least they went out on top, like Dismember did. Omega Wave was a very strong album.

Omega Wave was awesome and sounded fresh. in some ways i like Russ's 50-year-old voice better than his voice way back: heavy, less of the cheesy screams and overbearing vibratto (sorry, guys, but that sound is dated) but still lots of power and control and great melodies.

not to dump on Russ. just saying his voice really aged and matured super well.

and the riffs were killer.

alas, shitty sales probably didn't help.

if Russ is in his 50s (which i've read) he probably has a family and commitments or just doesn't have the energy.

March Into Fire!!!

I think there can be a good balance between a 9 to 5 and touring in a band at their level. Do an album a year. Tour 2 weeks out of the year. Forbidden were trying to do what death angel did and that's just not working for them. To ask a man in his 40's to tour the U.S. is a pretty big request. Especially if he has a family and comes home with a few hundred dollars for his efforts.

You deal with:
Promoters lie! You get out there just to find that your "tour bus" is a VW minivan. You arrive at a show and catering is slimy warm salami and bread after not eating a meal in 15 hours. You get to the venue and there are absolutely no posters promoting your show which results in about a 40 person turnout that also subsequently results in the promoter telling you that he lost his ass and can only pay you $35.

Like I said. A lot to ask of someone in their 40's. I wish things were better for them. You get bands like Black Veil Brides that are coasting on image alone and it's because if there are thousands of teenaged girls cheering and throwing panties with the hopes of getting fucked by one of those posers then the industry backs them like crazy! A great band like Forbidden puts out a great record and tours and 100 people. That's a shame when you see 200 people at a show and call that a good audience! The thrash resurgence is just about over anyway so I can see more of these announcements coming in the future.

Good luck to all the Forbidden guys

One of my favorite bands of all time! I think Russ couldnt take the mental hit that his voice wasnt like it used to be. If he reads any of this he should know it didnt matter. We all get old bro. Omega Wave was killer. I was bummed they never made it anywhere near where I live on that tour. At least we have those albums to wear the fuck out. \m/ R.I.P Forbidden

Thats sad but i'm pretty sure some of them are not done with music.
Steve Smyth for example could cooperate with Glen Alvelais take Sasha Horn or Mark Hernandez as a drummer + some vocalist and continue making metal \m/
Craig Locicero is playing with Demonica... in any way we will probably hear something new from these guys in the near future.
Good luck to them!

... until we say it is over" was one of the notes written in the Green album booklet. For some reason, I have hopes they will somehow be able to pick up their pieces and continue. Heavy touring can be too much of a strain, I understand that, but if they could only release a new album... I hope they didn't pick up Sasha for nothing???

I have a dream...

Forbidden is awesome, but chasing that success must wear on you. It truly sucks that they weren't big to more people, but they're one of my favorites. Can't blame people for just not wanting it if they don't, or get worn out on it. Thanks for giving the fans another shot, guys, and for a great album of newer material. Hopefully you guys can get together again in 5-10 years and give us more of your great tunes together.

And since you're specifying "recording" band, hit some festivals a couple of times a year and have fun with it!

I came on board with Twisted Into Form and was thrilled when they started recording again. The singer has such a distinctive voice - it is almost like a punch in the chest when you listen to him.

Thanks for the music, Forbidden! You guys truly rule!

was a stunning comeback album. Almost up there with Tempo Of The Damned in terms of it's amazing return to classic form. And Russ, for me, sounded amazing on the album. He hadn't lost any of his chops from the old days, and his vocals were more multi-faceted. He can do more with his voice now, than he could more than 20 years ago.

I really hope this isn't the end for Forbidden, but if it is, they have left a great, if underappreciated legacy. And 3 classic albums in Omega Wave, Twisted Into Form, and Forbidden Evil. I hope Russ changes his mind, he is one of metal's elite vocalists. But I understand his decision... :(

That's some really sucky news. I loved Omega Wave, but I thought they'd do a blistering follow-up after shaking off the rust. I talked to Mark Hernandez after a show when he was drumming for them, and he was so upbeat saying Omega Wave was "only the beginning" for Forbidden. Then he left, Russ left, and here we are. Anyway, thanks Forbidden for five damn good albums. Wish there was more to come.

If this is the end for this band they should be proud of themselves. Omega Wave is a master piece, definitely the best comeback album of all those original thrash bands.

So in a nutshell.......Just aren't making enough money to make it worth while. I totally get it....so many want to bang the drum to we do it for the music bs...but reality is that doesn't pay the bills. It has to wear the fuck out of you year after year. Being in there 40's I'm sure isn't exciting thinking about touring the country for peanuts as a lot of bands in this genre just don't draw well so the pay isn't much.

To those of you like pest666 etc who decide from their keyboards what is and isn't possible for other people to do here's my two cents.

Firstly, it isn't about you! YOU may want more Forbidden but if Russ doesn't then just accept it.

Speaking as someone who had some success back in the day (nowhere near the Forbidden level) and put a few albums out hardly a week goes by without comments on my old bands Facebook tribute page asking us why we don't get back together. The one answer that seems to floor everyone is that we don't want to. Simple as that. If there isn't a will then there will NEVER be a way.
Respect these guys (Russ anyway) decision and pay tribute, like most of you have done. Nothing is forever.

I always had the impression that this Craig guy was a bit difficult to deal with...a Kerry King type of person, you know? Well, he's surely the reason why Forbidden almost became a "big thing", he worked harder than all his bandmates, but reading what he said in interviews...well, he seemed to be a "my way or no way" kind of person, always complaining about something or someone. He recruited "team players", letting go people who probably wanted a more say in the songwriting department (Glen Alvelais, Robb Flynn).
Russ Anderson even said Craig always tried and wanted to change his lyrics.
Anyway, first two albums, especially TIF = awesomne thrash classics. The other albums...not really. "Distortion", with all that groove, was a huge disappointment, at least for me.

...most of the above comments were spot-on re: the realities that most bands have to deal with. If you're not Metallica or Iron Maiden (or even an Anthrax or Testament), life can be very difficult trying to promote an album, giving it your all and seeing next-to-nothing for it.

These guys have families and others depending on them, they can't toil for nothing.

I agree some have probably found something of a "sweet spot" by only touring a bit here and there and supplementing income in other ways.

Anyway, sucks to hear this, but I respect their decision. For the record, I bought Omega Wave and it's a killer album.

I was always into TIF. It was until recently that I "discovered" forbidden evil and omega wave. I was hoping they would do just one more album. I love Craig's riffs, maybe he'll record them as instrumentals??? probably not...

thanks for the great music guys, but I'm still hoping for something in the future.

They should really reconsider and make one last thrash cd! Get Bostaph and Calvert to help make it! Talk your bassist into making one more cd and he can always do a show or two in the summer. Don't know how being a lawyer you don't get any vacation time or time to work on other things. No one expects them to tour the same as they did in 1990. I hope Russ gets his passion back. I can't envision anyone else singing for Forbidden. Loved the last cd and never listen to record execs to change your style. Going to play some forbidden now!!
