METALLICA, VAN HALEN, SCORPIONS, AEROSMITH Among Pollstar's 2012 'Top 50 Worldwide Tours' - Jan. 3, 2013
METALLICA, VAN HALEN, SCORPIONS and AEROSMITH had some of the top-grossing tours of 2012 worldwide, according to industry tracker Pollstar.

The top spot went to Madonna, whose 2012 tour took in a whopping $296.1 million from 88 shows.

METALLICA landed at No. 8, with a gross estimate of $86.1 million for 30 concerts.

The "Top 50 Worldwide Tours" did a combined gross of $3 billion, which was down about 2 percent from $3.07 billion in 2011.

Total tickets sold was 34.9 million which continued the decline from 35.48 million the previous year and is well off the pace from 2009 when the Top 50 sold 45.3 million. The average global ticket price was $85.93 which was down 60 cents from last year but still well above the $73.83 charged in the more robust year of 2009.

Heavy metal/hard rock artists on Pollstar's 2012 "Top 50 Worldwide Tours" chart:

#8 - METALLICA: $86.1 million from 30 shows
#15 - VAN HALEN: $49.9 million from 50 shows
#38 - SCORPIONS: $32.7 million from 74 shows
#44 - AEROSMITH: $31 million from 33 shows

hmmm......Rush played 35 shows, averaging about $800k per which puts them at about 28 million.

It's hard to believe Aerosmith grossed more.

I think total number of tickets sold and % of total tickets sold per venue is a better indicator of a successful tour, though.

If you charge $300 for tickets and only sell half the seats, that's an indication that either (a) you're not as popular as you think you are, or (b) you've priced yourself out of the market.

It's the same thing with box office grosses at the movies...inflation is a real bitch. The adjusted gross list at boxofficemojo.com says Gone with the Wind is STILL the most successful film of all-time, and Avatar is only #14.

It's a bit of a weird way to tally things up that's for sure. Metallica played a third of the shows Madonna did. Shouldn't there be some sort of calculation based on ticket price, venue size and average attendance or something?

And what the fuck is with some of the bands, groups, musicians, etc on that list?!? What are people paying good money to see? The fuck?

Lars should buy the Sanctuary label (which contains Neat Records, Noise Records, Castle Communications...) and release their entire back catalogue through Blackened Records.

Reissues of all the Metallica singles/EP's, both on cd and vinyl, would be welcome as well.

I'm surprised you're surprised!

You're surprised that a band who's singer spent all year on one of America's biggest TV shows and is a number one selling band in the states (not something Rush have ever been) out sold Rush live?

I LOVE Rush but that is the most unsurprising thing I've heard in a while.

The top 50 tours grossed around 3 billions? Force all those artists to go on a tour for free and harvest all the money so we can get a cut on taxes. My taxes probably paid a lot of those guys when they were nobodies so I want my share of it, thanks.

You make a good point, but I still dont think those 'new' fans were rushing out to see Aerosmith. To keep things in proportion, CA outsold Aerosmith's new album by about 40%. Why didn't all those 'new' fans buy it? The same reason they didn't go see them live.

Was glad to see kiss didn't make it. I think Simmons should dress as the banker. He could spit coins and burn money. His cape cld look like 100 dollar bills and his bat make-up cld be dollar signs.

It's great to see these classic bands still hitting the road & making great new music all these years later.

I fear that these classics are the final payoff shows for a lot of these guys and then we will have nothing but the shitty pro tools bands. Old age is going to suck for me.

It is a good list to see who completely rips people off. On the other side of the coin, if people pay an AVERAGE of $530 to see the Rolling Stones, who am I to fault them. Say all you want about Metallica selling out, blah blah blah, I'll bet Cliff would be amazed that his brothers were raking in that kind of coin and still doing what they want to do....whether you still like the music or not.
