METALLICA Receives More Platinum, Gold Certifications From RIAA - Jan. 3, 2013
According to VVN Music, METALLICA upped their platinum album totals in December on two of their classics, with the band's self-titled LP (a.k.a. the Black Album) getting its 16th platinum certificate from the RIAA (Recording Industry Association Of America), signifying 16,000,000 copies sold, while "Ride The Lightning" landed its sixth. They also secured six gold certificates for passing 500,000 digital downloads of individual songs and two gold certificates for songs that exceeded 500,000 downloads as ringtones.

Multi-Platinum Album (1,000,000 units sold)

* Metallica (16x Platinum)
* Ride The Lightning (6x Platinum)

Digital Gold Single (500,000 units sold)

* Nothing Else Matters
* Fade to Black
* The Unforgiven
* For Whom the Bell Tolls
* Master of Puppets
* The Day That Never Comes

Mastertone Gold Song (500,000 ringtone downloads)

* Enter Sandman
* One

"Metallica" in 2009 surpassed SHANIA TWAIN's 1997 record, "Come On Over", as the best-selling CD of the SoundScan era.

Although METALLICA had scored their first radio and video airplay with their previous effort, 1988's "...And Justice For All", the black album was the band's biggest commercial breakthrough, producing five singles and making them into one of the most popular rock bands in the world.

METALLICA played the complete "black album" at its own Orion Music + More festival, which took place last June in Atlantic City, New Jersey. METALLICA headlined both days and performed its entire 1984 album "Ride The Lightning" for the first time ever on the other day of the festival.

...in the last years, so many average records like Load and Reload, absolute crap like Shit Anger and that godawful collaboration Lulu, the addition of a very skilled bass player that just doesn't fit the band, in my opinion severely damaged the band's name, and that's exactly why the first five albums sells so much to this day.

I'll agree with your subject line there, but I will NEVER understand the rest.

I'll defend Load and ReLoad (not to mention St. Anger) until the day I die.....and it's disgusting how much hate and disrespect those fantastic records still receive. Bluesy, groovy, country, and sexy are just some words I think of when listening to one of my favorite 'Tallica periods. They were intentionally anti-metal, and a huge middle finger to fan expectation.

Rememeber kids.....it's not what the fan wants, but what the artist wants to do at any given time.

I get what you're saying, but couldn't disagree more. Those records were terrible. If they wanted to do country, bluesy, all that stuff... go do side projects. No one wants to hear those styles in the context of Metallica.

I honestly believe that had they released Load as the first album of their career, they'd have been NOTHING. The sales of everything past the Black album are REALLY owed to how incredible the first five records were.

But it's cool that you're open-minded like that! Don't see that much on here.

I don't know Load and Reload are ok in there own right. They get just so torn apart because of the 5 master pieces before them.

St. Anger.....I just don't get it. There is some interesting riffs and lyrics. But it's like they got half way done and just said...F it lets release it like that and be done with it. I can still hear that snare drum. I don think that if a producer put all together and changed up a few things it would've been a very interesting record on the good side.

DM.....Made me excited about new Metallica music for the future. It's in the right direction that I think fans want.

I agree, but these guys are too artsy and too impressed with themselves now. I have no problem with trying something different, but why call it Metallica?

No wonder the latest albums aren't doing that well. Even the mainstream reckons those albums were crap.

Who on earth has the time to check ringtones sales and compile them? What a loss of productivity!

...is that the first 3 albums COMBINED haven't sold as much as the "Black Album" and AJFA has outsold all of the individually. This is a perfect example of people discovering a band after their prime.

(from RIAA):

Kill 'em all 3x platinum
Ride the lightning 6x platinum
Master of Puppets 6x platinum
...And Justice For All 8x platinum
Metallica 16x platinum
Load 5x platinum
Reload 4x platinum
St. Anger 2x platinum
Death Magnetic 2x platinum

Haven't been a Metallica fan in more than 20 years but still good for them. As for people calling for Jason to come back, that's just stupid. What, and take the job away for Rob? Newsted gave up the spot and now Trujillo is swimming in cash! Case closed!

The "Black" album is one of the most overrated, watered down metal records of all time. It blows my mind that people are still buying it.

That's such crap. They changed because metal went out of style when grunge happened. Why do you think they did Death Magnetic? Because metal came back into style. Full stop. Giving a big middle finger to fan expectation is just stupid. Why would you want to do that to your own fans? Why did they just release another DVD of mostly old stuff and Beyond Magnetic? To sweep Lulu under the carpet.

God that picture of Metallica is so awful. Nothing thrash metal about it. Might as well be some gay band like Neon Trees.
