MEGADETH's MUSTAINE Is 'So Impressed' With Drummer SHAWN DROVER's Performance On New Album - Jan. 1, 2013
MEGADETH recently resumed work on its fourteenth studio album with producer Johnny K (full name: John Karkazis), who has previously worked with DISTURBED, SEVENDUST, MACHINE HEAD and STAIND. The CD is currently being recorded at MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine's Vic's Garage studio in San Marcos, California for an early 2013 release via an as-yet-undisclosed label following the band's recent split with Roadrunner Records.

In a tweet last night (Monday, December 31), Mustaine wrote: "Started song 5 tonight. I have NEVER heard Shawn [Drover, drums] play better. So impressed with him!!"

Mustaine previously told NME about the direction of MEGADETH's new material, "Some of it's a little darker, some of it's a little faster. Being in this position right now, not knowing where we're gonna go or what we're gonna do, it's kind of like the world's ours to do what we want. Are we gonna go back to the speed and thrash metal roots that made us who we are? Are we gonna experiment and rely on the melody that we've discovered in MEGADETH songs?"

Mustaine also spoke about how he likes to keep MEGADETH's music more melodic than that of most thrash bands. "We've tried to do that in MEGADETH, have a little melody so that it's not just the same old grinding music like everybody else has," he said. "We're just happy to get going and get to the studio."

Johnny K produced MEGADETH's last album, 2011's "TH1RT3EN", which was also recorded at Vic's Garage.

"TH1RT3EN" sold 42,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 11 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD marked the recorded return of bassist David Ellefson who was part of the band's classic lineup from 1983 to 2002. In a move that delighted the band's legion of diehards, Ellefson returned to performing live with MEGADETH in early 2010 and has remained a fixture on the stage ever since. This was the first time Ellefson has played on a MEGADETH record since 2002's "Rude Awakening".

Maybe they gave him some coke or speed or a double espresso... that guy needs to pound these drums with some aggression or anger or any kind of passion. I agree with what most people say, the drumming sounds like "I'm just doing my job here" both live and on the albums.

Shawn seems like a really nice guy and all, but there has never been any question that he is the weakest link in this band. He is competent and will always "keep the beat", but do not ever think you are going to be taken back or blown away with anything he does. It's a shame that during live sets they have to bury drumming parts that are really good from prior drummers in the mix because the guy just doesn't have the chops. Again - seems like a nice guy and solid, but wouldn't be my first choice.

I would take Jimmy DeGrasso any day over Nick. Why does everyone always pick the nostalgia line-up? Jimmy had the tools, experience and resume. What has Nick done through the years? Not alot I imagine. Oh, by the way, Al Pitrelli was a great player as well. Al over Chris anyday!

I like both Jimmy and Al with Alice Cooper, but with Megadeth it just didn't click. Sure, they played on some of their most boring albums (I started appreciating them a lot more when I got Rude Awakening), but the solos on TWNAH aren't very memorable and the drumming on that and Risk are very safe. Not boring or watered down, like the Drovers, but still. Menza did some interesting things on drums, especially on Cte and Youthanasia. 'sides, no one is going to argue that Ozzy is a better singer than Dio, but I'm sure more people would want to see a nostalgic Black Sabbath with Ozzy, than them doing Dehumanizer.

The drummers in Megadeth have always been their weakest link since Gar left and even he was not all that. I agree that Drover is not very good but that dude they had on so far, so good, so what was just awful and by far the worst drummer they have had. That record almost ruined their careers! Just an awful record!

SFSGSW is one of Meg's best albums. The musicianship on that album is incredible as well. The solos are blistering, rhythms fast, and drumming technical. Sure there's some cheese but every Meg album has some cheese.

I saw Megadeth in November and I closely watched Shawn. I don't know if he was not feeling well but that was a phoned in performance if I have ever seen one. His personality is perfect for Megadeth but he just doesn't have the energy of the fine drummers before him. I don't know what Nick did to fuck up his offers from Dave but I really wish he wouldn't have.

Shawn is not all bad and I do like the guy. When Megadeth were opening for Slayer a couple years ago they were on fire. However he has been hit or miss. I don't think the samples Dave seems to be in love with help matters any.

Menza got mad at one of the Drovers after they started back up in 2004 (something trivial, like getting coffee or something), Dave sided with Glen and hired Shawn on drums. At least, that's what the Megadeth forums used to say.

Mustaine is asking him to keep on the beat and not get fancy so the guitars stand out more? I've been in bands before that have pointedly asked me not to get too fancy. Just because Phil Rudd doesn't do rolls or fills doesn't mean he's not capable of it. It's because he was specifically told not to.

Dave is impressed by Clint Eastwood talking to a chair, Alex Jones and fairy stories from the Bronze Age, so I don't think Shawn should be breaking out the champagne *just* yet.

I have -always- thought that Drover was a terrible fit for Megadeth; he isn't a thrash drummer. His playing is too lackadaisical. He might fit in a more traditional heavy metal band, but Megadeth NEEDS a fast, balls-to-the-wall thrash drummer and this guy is not it and will never be.

I can also nail all the drum parts from Rust In Peace. Nobody called me. Might be because he doesn't know my number. Drover's not bad. But Mustaine could have a much better drummer in that band if he wanted one.

Mustaine always had a hard time letting drummers share the spotlight with him. No wonder he's sticking with Drover; The guy hides behind the kit, plays the parts and says yes to whatever Dave ask for. Megadeth is Dave Mustaine's solo band with hired guns to play the parts he can't. It's been like that ever since David Ellefson left the first time.

Dave's a real drumming critic.

Nick was the guy who helped make RIP with excellent fills and overall power drumming that had a special feel to it, which matched Marty's exotic scales.

Drover's good. A lot of fast double kick drumming and metronome timing. To me that type of drumming lacks personality and probably explains why I don't have an interest in Deth records anymore.

and I have the answer to it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lShTMrFVco

AND EVEN BETTER: DRUM SOLO/PEACE SELLS/FFF 1997
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkHRlWCR5A4

the obvious thing is that menza kept on living the rock n roll lifestyle and probably had every inch of his nostrils covered in white when the other guys and esp. mustaine had grown up.
when menza got sick mustaine had the perfect excuse in hand - and still he lost. with menza, rock n roll & adrenaline left.

I have seen them 12 times or so since then, but the last really outstanding megadeth shows were in 1998, those who were there know. great voice, something like an entertaining stage show and passion for their own music.

I used to love this band madly, but I cannot stand to watch that corpse without a soul that is has become.
I guess one needs to have seen them in the psbwb or rip lineup or at least with jimmy degrasso before friedman left to understand the huge nosedive - a former world class band that has been pure shit now for 3 years.

Seems to me Dave is the weakest link. Whenever one guy takes control and barks orders (their selfish visions) at the other 3 it weakens and takes away from the band. It's not a band. It's the Dave Mustaine show. I bet the material would be better but the greed of not sharing song writing credits unfortunately is what ruins a song.

I didn't have a problem with the drums during current live shows, I had a problem with Dave's vocals that were buried in the mix. I have never heard him turned up over the music to showcase his voice ever. It's a shame cause it would be bad ass.

When does the press start where Dave starts telling us this is the best heaviest megadeth release to ever come out 5 times a day?

I'll be fucking buying it so don't bitch at me!

Menza is still the best drummer of Megadeth, and pretty close Samuelson in 2nd place. But Drover....was never near to compete with these 2 monsters, not in albums or live.

Musically, since Megadeth reformed with the drovers on the system tour, I tealized that Shawn is the weak link live. I think I saw him five times since he joined, and all were just average performances. Good, but not great. Weak rolls and lackluster performances for a band that could have got a world class drummer. Sure, I guess it.s possible mustaine told him to keep it simple, but that seems unlikely. He even cheats on many tom rolls by using his feet on the double bass instead. Just watching his performance of the songs on system has failed, which were recorded by Vinnie c., you can see he cheats on many of the studio drum rolls. Doesnt he have arm skills?

Gar and Nick were the best Megadeth drummers in this order. the production on PSBWB and RIP doesn't make justice to their drumming. I wish Dave would have kept Chris Poland and Nick Menza for that TSHF album.

might be the best live performance ever.
