Video: TODD LA TORRE-Fronted Version Of QUEENSRŸCHE Performs 'Queen Of The Reich' In Tempe - Dec. 31, 2012
Fan-filmed video footage of the Todd La Torre-fronted version of QUEENSRŸCHE performing the band's classic song "Queen Of The Reich" this past Saturday, December 29 at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe, Arizona can be seen below.

QUEENSRŸCHE recently finished recording the drums for its new album at London Bridge Studios in Seattle, Washington with producer James "Jimbo" Barton — the man who engineered and mixed the band's classic 1988 LP, "Operation: Mindcrime", and its 1990 follow-up, "Empire", and co-produced 1994's "Promised Land". The rest of the music and vocals are being laid down over the coming weeks at several different facilities on the West Coast.

In a posting on his official Facebook page, La Torre — who is also a member of Florida melodic metallers CRIMSON GLORY — wrote earlier in the month: "People stare speechless [when we play 'Queen Of The Reich' live], because they are shocked to hear the song performed well, a song that 'broke out' this legendary pioneering band." He added, in a what appeared to be a dig at the man he replaced, Geoff Tate, "Shame on anyone to deny the music that garnished fans in the first place and still resonates 30 years later."

Asked by Rock Show Critique in a recent interview with why QUEENSRŸCHE rarely performs "Queen Of The Reich" live despite it being one of the band's most popular tunes, Tate said, "Actually, it's not very popular at all. It's funny, actually — a lot of people don't know about that song. A lot of people don't care about that song. It's an early song that was written and it shows. It's funny the reaction you get, because it's a lot of blank stares. In fact, it's the same stare you get when you play a new song that nobody's heard before. People just aren't that familiar with it. Given there are a few hardcore fans that might know that song, or like that song, and know what it is, but the majority of the people there don't. So it's not really a song that I enjoy singing, strictly because, lyrically, it's pretty adolescent. It was the first song written thirty-some-odd years ago and obviously I cannot relate to it anymore. I think, for performance, it's always best for the performer to really believe in the material they're singing or playing. If you don't believe in it, it's really difficult to get behind a song, do it well and do it at a level that comes across with any kind of believability. For me, I honestly can't relate to the whole dungeons-and-dragons lyrical content of that song; it's really cartoonish and juvenile to me."

Too bad Geoff can't sing like he used to because he was untouchable in his prime. Now Geoff is shit and Queensryche has their "Ripper."

Todd and the band sound perfect together. First time I've been excited about a new QR album since when I bought Empire (which mostly sucked so I was very disappointed after I heard it - though little did I know the band would sink further into banality with each passing year - until they devested themselves of the cancer this year).

Shows what the fans want. They are not going to inVEST their time and energy on a "band" who caters to the win and cheese crowd with their wine and cheese music. The place looked packed and probably 10x the fans of one real Q'Ryche show than 10 VestRyche shows.

Looked like several hundred to maybe a thousand or more "few hardcore" fans there Jeffrey. Looked like they enjoyed the shit out of that song there Jeffrey. How many are enjoying the shit out of what you are doing Jeffrey? Besides you and your family that is?

Its unfortunate, but Geoff's comments above show his attitude toward the band and the fans in general. Geoff pretty much didn't like rehashing the old material because quite frankly, he can't sing it anymore. Do you think Steve Tyler "relates" to Dream On after 40 years? But Aerosmith still sings it fairly regularly. They do it for the fans. That's something Geoff seems to forget. The fans like hearing the old stuff (and most like it better than the newer stuff if album sales any indication). Celebrate the bands history Geoff. There were 2 albums and an EP before Mindcrime you know.

I thought this whole two-queensryches thing was silly, but I have to give it up: they sound fucking excellent.

And I don't know if the people know that song or not, but I do know they are fucking loving it.

Tate fucked up. I think these guys, like Journey, will get a little hitch in the ticket sales once word gets out that they are sounding good and playing what the fans want to hear.

Apparently not. 2012 has come to a close, but this band is still focused on performing and promoting a song from 1982. That's what they call a "nostalgia act," folks.

Where is the new material? With all the talk of having fully completed demos and laying down tracks in multiple studios for a new record scheduled to be released in early 2013, I truly believed that there could be at least one new song ready to be performed live. Unfortunately, there were none. It seems that this band is still stuck relying on a set list of material written by Geoff Tate and Chris DeGarmo to get them through each show.

I am a bit puzzled because the previously released teaser of 5 second clips + ambient noise shows that there was at least some music written. Maybe they can't perform any new songs yet because they are waiting for their producer to fix up their partially formed ideas and complete their work as has been the case on all Queensryche records since DeGarmo's departure. I suppose the recording process hasn't reached that stage yet. Well, don't worry. These guys have until November.

At least they are doing what the fans want. It is my opinjion that their fan base is not looking for a reason every other year to hear mindcrime. I have read so much of the mudslinging from some of the posters on this. And yes it is true in november we will have a decision on the name but as of now I'm not a lawyer but queensryche the corporation is still in tact, so that would mean Geoff gets money either way as do the other members of queensryche. The real winners are the fans that now have a choice of which band they would like to see. Oh yes that does look like a packed house. And 75 to 25= geoff gets money for his shares but no name Except former singer of Queenryche.

Do you realize how stupid you sound? You work for Geoff Tate and you're going to pretend you know nothing about the music industry while you try to make up these half baked insults? Why would they be in a hurry to play a new song at least 3 months before the album comes out? And they are not promoting "a song" from 1982. It happens to be the opening song of a set full of classics that real Queensryche fans want to hear. Half of which were written by WILTON!

You are puzzled alright! You're on here with every story pretending they're going to have any trouble getting a record deal or acting like you don't know albums aren't recorded in one studio anymore. How fucking stupid do you think music fans are? I know Geoff's career is pretty much in the shitter. But why in god's name do you come on here destroying every last shred of dignity he once had?

GET A CLUE!!!!

Well Mish, Queensryche is going to laugh at your faces this November. Wait till you get stuck with all the legal bills Tates! If its a nostalgia act we don't care we love the history and looking foward for the future. We the fans waited so long for this Queensryche to come back. My advise to you is tell Geoff and his dumb ass management or family to hide a disappear. They have caused so much damage that people are laughing at Geoff's performances and behavior. Sad so sad. Todd has officially taken over the throne. Accept it and move on.

are hilarious & the Tate backers get defensive and lash out so easily on here. If you have a preferred side that's cool, buy the music you like but to call Todd a "fake American Idol singer" is just a dumb thing to say. I don't know any of these folks personally and don't care to. I have my own job, bills, family, etc. to deal with. It's extremely difficult for a working relationship in any business to last 20, 30, 40 years...especially when you're talking about a group of people. Bands get new members all the time, just move on. It's all about the music. If any version/members(past or present) of QR are gonna play & release some heavier, more aggressive shit, than I'm in. So far Todd seems like a great fit for what this bunch is trying to do.

Whenever I hear the name "Queensryche" I automatically think of the song, "Queen of the Ryche" I bought the first EP when it came out. I wasn't really a fan of any of the other stuff they put out. I kind of always thought of them as an Iron Maiden clone band. The singing was always over the top, but, I guess, flaunt it while you got it!

It was Queensryche before Jeffrey was even in the band. 3 of the original founding members still there and there is no reason to change it. How many originals are left in WASP? Whitesnake? Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy? Hell if you get right down to it, there is only 1 original Def Leppard member left and no one is screaming for them to change their name. Rockinfield, Whitten and Jackson have ever right to keep the name of the band they started.

Tate's voice/attitude/arrogance have been issues for a few years now. They haven't released anything decent since Hear In The Now Frontier and that was due to DeGarmo's return to the writing. Let's face it, DeGarmo was always the strongest songwriter of the band, so both Ryche's are on equal ground with new material. One can only assume he left the band cuz he was sick of Tate's shit, so maybe he'll hook up with Todd's version. Regardless, Todd sounds great and would do any song from the band's early or late catalog justice.

I'll ask one simple question. What would you rather see them open the show with? Queen Of The Reich or Get Started which was featured earlier this year? Come on Geoff, even you know the answer to that question. Can't wait for the new Ryche. La Torre fucking rocks. \m/QR\m/

"So it's not really a song that I enjoy singing, strictly because, lyrically, it's pretty adolescent. It was the first song written thirty-some-odd years ago and obviously I cannot relate to it anymore" - What if Iron Maiden quit playing the song Iron Maiden for this reason? Many bands have early "adolescent" songs that they've personally outgrown, but it remains part of the band's legacy and people do want to hear it.

Tates Queensryche is already dead in the water for several reasons: #1 Blotzer can't play Scott's parts. Period. #2 Blotzer is a known sexist pig here in Los Angeles. Will go bad w/ Susan Tate being manager. #3 Drover already quit, not even one show played. #3 I bet promoters are already counting on Todd fronted Ryche as the cash cow. Sorry Tate, karma is a bitch. Family Tate, please hit dislike to confirm what was just said....Happy New Year!!!

I could careless about Geoff or the rest....I have no idea what really happened and I really don't care....I am a fan of the music this band use to make and if either version can release new music that has that same inspired feel I will buy it and support that version....Happy New Year to All!!!

Ok, Todd's their vocalist. We all get that. Now someone film other songs and post them. I'm sick of the 49th 'Queen of the Reich' video already.

That was awesome! Though, wouldn't we all rather hear lyrics about Geoff's wife riding him like an exercise machine i/o these "juvenile," "Dungeons & Dragons" lyrics?

I'm surprised you are bringing up new music considering your boss put out a piece of crap that has bottomed out at less than 3k copies. Not to mention his solo tour hasn't even played to a total of 3k fans.

Anyone seen the entire Rocklahoma set on youtube? Tater Tot sounds like Wayne Newton and comes nowhere close to reaching any high note.

I love how so many people got the first EP "as soon as it came out in '83". Impressive, there had to be so much buzz around this unknown band anywhere outside of the Seattle bar scene leading up the release of their debut EP. Unless you were following the underground Seattle metal scene in the early 80's (which I understand was HUGE at the time) there would have been virtually no way of knowing about its upcoming release to be waiting at the record store for it on day one. Sorry, the BS detector went off on that one.

That's not entirely true. Some of the girlfriends/wives of the band members at that time lierally drove across the country and brought that e.p. to record stores by themselves. I live in Illinois, and one of our independent stores, there's a clerk there that remembers them because the dude bought it after hearing it for the first time. When good and young bands catch fire, especially back then, people get excited. Van Halen's fan base back in the mid-late 70's is a good example.
that first ep sold pretty well regionally, but it did sell well wherever it was distributed, and I'm sure that helped them land the deal with EMI.

The best he could hope for last night was a few hundred fans for his wine soaked lounge music show.

Meanwhile, the real QR ripped it up in Vegas in front of thousands:

Go on, Tate nut-swingers. Tell me again how the real QR is going to crash and burn without Uncle Vester.

...you'd have to blind, deaf and delusional not to see how fucking on fire Queensryche is right now. All you have to do is compare videos like this one, of a packed theater rocking out to the band opening with their signature song to one of Tate's where he is walking around on stage looking bored with a wine glass and vest and doing songs no one fucking knows or cares about to a half-filled pub room.

Can't wait to hear the new Queensryche album - I have no doubt that it's gonna kick major ass.

And to the guy above doubting people could have gotten the QR ep - well, SOMEBODY was buying it. How do you think they got their reputation so early? I live and grew up in the pacific northwest and remember the huge metal scene that was up here then, even though I was just a little kid in '83, and I still managed to grab hold of a copy. I also still remember being in awe that something that cool and professional sounding was coming from my home state.

Rock on, 'Ryche!

They are a lot of fun but isn't it all sad commentary on "the state of metal" in general today when basically THESE THREADS are almost all we have to look forward to?

Please tell me something coming out in the next few months other than a real Queensryche album I can look forward to?

and its a good cover version, but TLT had trouble at spots hitting a few notes. But it's a cover version no more no less. Tate may be a douche for not playing this live, sure. TLT is not a dead ringer for Geoff's voice live the way Ripper did Halford when he was in Priest.
Sorry but again... no Tate, no Degarmo = QR cover band. FYI this great tune was written by DeGarmo don't see him here...

You won't see DeGarmo with Queensryche unless its something special regarding the history of band (like them getting into the Rock Hall of Fame or something). He retired from music in 1998. The only other thing he did with them was return to help write the album Tribe, which was the worst selling album in the band's history until Dedicated to Chaos came out. It wasn't until they fired Tated that there was any mention of DeGarmo leaving due to Tate. At the time, their then lable Sanctuary admitted they exaggerated his involvement with the band for Tribe in order to generate interest in them once again. Keep in mind, Hear in the Now Frontier (which featured DeGarmo) and Q2K flopped commericially. Tribe was an attempt at a comeback that failed.

How sweet it is! Looking forward to seeing this when it comes through the Northeast in March!

Here is the difference: Geoff Tate played the Mexicalli Grill in Teaneck NJ (Bar), Queensryche will be playing the Bergan NJPAC. (A REAL Venue) the next town over. Humm, kind of obvious there is a difference in which can draw a crowd versus a handful of people.
