MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE: 'Three Songs Tracked And Almost Done' For Next Album - Dec. 24, 2012
MEGADETH has resumed work on its fourteenth studio album with producer Johnny K (full name: John Karkazis), who has previously worked with DISTURBED, SEVENDUST, MACHINE HEAD and STAIND. The CD is currently being recorded at MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine's Vic's Garage studio in San Marcos, California for an early 2013 release via an as-yet-undisclosed label following the band's recent split with Roadrunner Records.

In a tweet earlier today, Mustaine wrote: "Three songs tracked and almost done. New MEGADETH music is coming to getcha!"

Mustaine previously told NME about the direction of MEGADETH's new material, "Some of it's a little darker, some of it's a little faster. Being in this position right now, not knowing where we're gonna go or what we're gonna do, it's kind of like the world's ours to do what we want. Are we gonna go back to the speed and thrash metal roots that made us who we are? Are we gonna experiment and rely on the melody that we've discovered in MEGADETH songs?"

Mustaine also spoke about how he likes to keep MEGADETH's music more melodic than that of most thrash bands. "We've tried to do that in MEGADETH, have a little melody so that it's not just the same old grinding music like everybody else has," he said. "We're just happy to get going and get to the studio."

Johnny K produced MEGADETH's last album, 2011's "TH1RT3EN", which was also recorded at Vic's Garage. Mustaine previously stated about the recording process for "TH1RT3EN", "We've got a great new partner with Johnny K. I mean, I was satisfied with our last co-producer, with Andy Sneap, and Andy really took us — and he even admits — as far as he could take us, and it was great because we wanted to go back to the big leagues where we were, and we feel that Johnny is, obviously, a big-league producer; not that Andy isn't — don't get me wrong. But we feel that this record is definitely one of our best. It's a great feeling, because, you know, finishing some of the last record, I can honestly say, in my heart I knew that it wouldn't contend with some of the great records in the past, just because of the timing, the label that we were on and stuff like that. Lineup changes and stuff… But I really think that everything just lined up for this record."

"TH1RT3EN" sold 42,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 11 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD marked the recorded return of bassist David Ellefson who was part of the band's classic lineup from 1983 to 2002. In a move that delighted the band's legion of diehards, Ellefson returned to performing live with MEGADETH in early 2010 and has remained a fixture on the stage ever since. This was the first time Ellefson has played on a MEGADETH record since 2002's "Rude Awakening".

I absolutely agree. Andy Sneap is a phenomenal producer and I think the Megadeth records he mixed sounded great. 13 sounded bland and Johnny K doesn't get a good guitar tone. I don't know what Dave and the guys are thinking working with him.

I have to disagree dude, in fact he is right up there with Greg Feldman to me. His albums have no life and no dynamics. That snare sample alone is enough to ruin it for me.

But the guy can still put together some interesting riffs at least. I think Endgame was far superior to 13. Sneap brought out the thrashier elements to the sound. The songs on 13 don't have the same bite production wise or song wise. I have a feeling this is going to be more of the same that we heard on 13 but probably more melodic. Peace Sells will never be topped.

I think about the first few albums and how fucking incredible they were and how exciting they are to listen to even today and I just can't fucking believe he has put out so much pure boring crap that I can't even get excited about a new Megadeth album anymore. It's quality not quantity Arthur!! I'm sure Dave doesn't mind still getting compared to Metallica but the peanut gallery. Remember when bands used to put two albums out a year? And they were awesome and groundbreaking. Think sabbath & the Beatles.

I've never thought of Megadeth or any thrash band as "grinding" music. Grind is Napalm Death. But the melodic style has always been with Megadeth ever since the 1st 2 albums with Lookin down the cross and good morning black friday. Thriteen was a little too much melody and not enough fast heavy like Endgame which was a much better album. One thing's certain with this band no matter if its a slower more melodic Megadeth or a faster thrashier Megadeth there will always be fantastic guitar work to be heard.

I hope Dave brings the riffs back. He is one of the best riff guys in metal if not the best. Seems like after all the guitar hero stuff he started concentrating on solos and made riffs just for something to solo over.

I wish I had fans like Megadeth's. All you need to do to please them is put together a bunch of fast riffs and solos, and they'll think you new album is awesome (and most importantly, better than Metallica), regardless you don't give a shit about music anymore and you are in it to pay the bills.

Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer haven't put out anything worth listening in 20 years. That's a hell of a long time and should tell a thing or two about possible retirement plans, eh?

Being I love OLD Metallica and sometimes cringe when Dave opens his mouth, let's be realistic, without Dave or Cliff writing the songs Metallica have been a boring and predictable bunch. Those two guys MADE Metallica, listen to Death Mag. It sounds like a bunch of dudes tryin to do something that they cannot do without either of these guys guiding the ship. You can hate all day but you cannot deny the fact that he has single handedly contributed more to the scene in his time than almost anybody else and continues to keep workin as hard if not harder touring and releasing albums every two years and yeah I thought the last record was bland but he's got a hellluva lot more in the tank then tallica who can't seem to put together a good song anymore without Cliff or Dave's writing helping them, and don't even get me started on how much more of a beast he is on guitar than James or Kirk, if you play guitar you understand that his Riffs are so complex and intricate whereas Metallica is some of the easiest shit to play.Who the hell cares what he says, this is a music site and I' m sure a lot of our music heroes are assholes as are most of us, the difference is Blabbermouth doesn't report it but they love Dave cuz it gets people fired up.

It's about writing a good SONG

PERIOD

There was nothing "complex and intricate" on Blood Of The Nations and it's better than ANY Dave Mundane album.

I'm sure Blood is a great Accept album, but better than any Megedeth album? That's your opinion.

And a great riff or bunch of riffs can make a song. In metal, that's the case most of the time. Obviously there are plenty of exceptions, and probably more examples of unmemorable songs with a few great riffs (prog and tech death bands a quite guilty of this.... but I love those styles anyway).
