METALLICA's 'Orion Music + More' Festival To Be Held At Detroit's Belle Isle? - Dec. 21, 2012
According to Crain's Detroit Business, the organizers of METALLICA's Orion Music + More festival are seriously considering Belle Isle as a destination for next year's edition of the two-day concert.

Belle Isle is a 982-acre (1.534 square miles) island park in the Detroit River, between the United States mainland and Canada, managed by the Detroit Recreation Department. It is connected to the rest of Detroit, Michigan by the MacArthur Bridge. It is the largest island city park in the United States and the third largest island in the Detroit River after Grosse Ile and Fighting Island.

Orion Music + More festival will take place on June 8-9, 2013. More details regarding tickets and the lineup for the show will be revealed in February. A teaser trailer for the event has been posted online.

Orion Music + More festival debuted last June 22-23 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Drummer Lars Ulrich told The Pulse Of Radio earlier this year that the growth of European-style festivals in the U.S. led the band to give their own a try. "Four years ago we played Bonnaroo in Tennessee, and that was like the first time we did something that had that kind of European flavor in America, and we thought it was really, really cool," he said. "And we thought, there were 75,000 people there that were digging it, and we thought that maybe that kind of vibe could actually work in America, and maybe that we could carve out our own little niche and try to see if we could get something off the ground."

The first Orion festival covered a wide range of music as well as other activities and exhibits that reflected the personal interests of the members of METALLICA.

The lineup featured acts like ARCTIC MONKEYS, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, MODEST MOUSE, THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM, CAGE THE ELEPHANT, BEST COAST, KYNG, GARY CLARK JR., LUCERO, ROKY ERICKSON, THE SWORD and others.

METALLICA headlined both nights, playing 1991's self-titled "black album" in its entirety one night and 1984's "Ride The Lightning" the other.

Exhibits relating to the personal hobbies of the members of METALLICA included a custom car show by James Hetfield, a film festival tent hosted by Ulrich, a horror memorabilia display from guitarist Kirk Hammett and a surfing exhibit by bassist Robert Trujillo.

The two Atlantic City shows sold a total of 24,000 tickets, according to The Press Of Atlantic City.

This document in question also mentions that Metallica will have that site for 2013, 2014 and 2015 for Orion.

Nothing like being able to bank on a trip in the future.

I loved going to Atlantic City last summer, but this could become awesome!

I'm actually thinking about going. I've never been outside the West Coast save a few Southeast Asia countries so I look forward to seeing what it's like, barring any financial woes that would possibly prevent such a trip. Couldn't afford to go last year, but if they're going to play Justice or even Kill 'em All in it's entirety, I'm totally game

Orion was an incredible experience and worth the trip from San Francisco - and the trip was HELL! I made the mistake of taking Amtrak to see the country and relax...big mistake but I digress.
Being a veteran of several Days on the Green, Warped, ozzfests, Tibetan Freedom and our local Tidal Wave fest I was expecting something along those lines. Boy , was I wrong.
As I entered AC the train went past the festival site as the crew was checking lighting cues on the main Orion stage. The sight of multiple stages on this huge abandoned airfield was a sight to behold. Right then I knew this was going to be something different than anything that called itself a festival.
If it had only been the size of the event or the line-up that was above and beyond that would have been one thing but the Metallica team paid attention to the smallest details and made it an awesome experience. Everyone involved from Steffan to Toby, from the vendors to the security were committed to making this a first class weekend. No price gouging for food and drink, lots of space to roam and toilets that were cleaned at least twice a day (and we all know what a Port o Let looks like after 8 hrs of constant use).
If the bands for 2013 are as great as this year and some of the features like the Q&A and car show return then this is something that every Metallica fan should experience.
Detroit is closer to the west coast so maybe by 2015 I'll be able to walk down the hill and see Orion in Golden Gate Park! MUYA!

I loved AC, because it was relatively easy for me to get to (Only 6 hours-ish from New England).

I'll definitely go to Detroit this year, but I wouldn't want it to stay in Detroit. I'd rather it moved around the country... Who wants to visit Detroit?

Detroit is a great metal town and they love metallica plus it will bring in a ton of canadian fans.

my guess is they want a permanent venue/city so they are trying various cities that work on all levels.

I hope they have it in las vegas..... metallica and hooker fest lmao

I would bet Jason will play the festival he is gonna tour with his new band in 2013

"Metal" and "Metallica" in the same sentence. Older material yes but, otherwise, that's a very ironic statement.
