Why Are There So Few African-Americans In Metal? - Dec. 21, 2012
Katon W. De Pena (pictured below) of long-running Long Beach, California-based metallers HIRAX is one of only a handful of black singers fronting metal and hard rock bands. Although there have been other African-Americans playing this genre of music — Jimi Hendrix, Phil Lynott (THIN LIZZY), Byron Davis (GOD FORBID) and Howard Jones (KILLSWITCH ENGAGE) spring to mind — they are not nearly as common as Latino metalheads are. Asked why he thinks that is, the 49-year-old De Pena tells Nicholas Pell of LA Weekly, "These are questions that need to be asked." He adds that although he's never felt excluded, he's felt "misunderstood by other black folks. You get looked at differently if you're black and into metal. I still get that today.

"There are tons of black kids who love metal, but they think that there won't be any other black kids there and they won't be accepted," he explains.

De Pena, who says that "in South America you notice a lot more black people" attending metal concerts, believes that "if black people went to shows, they'd be stoked. It's not like what people hear about on talk shows. People come from all religious backgrounds, skin tones and hair lengths. I was more accepted [when I first started going to metal shows] because we're all outcasts and misfits."

Because there are very few African Americans and also black people over the world who are into metal, especially compared to other populations, it's just not in their culture just as metal is very much in the culture of Germany Greece and other countries and people.

Wouldn't say it's just African-Americans but Africans in general. Its disappointing how a race of people can go from inventing Blues to pedaling the type of crap you now see in the mainstream.

"Why isn't Rocky George mentioned in an article where Katon is wearing a Suicidal Tendencies shirt? "

This author's fixation on the vocalist position smacks of incomplete research. It's like the groupies who only want to land the singer just because they don't know any better.

Rocky, Darren McFarlane, Terrance Hobbs, and Mike Smith are the first black metalists to pop into my mind. Those dudes are BADASSES, too!

Just like anything else, it takes time. Metal has been around for nearly 40+ years, but in the grand scheme of things, it's relatively new. It didn't sprout from within their community like blues, R&B, and rap did, and I'm sure it seemed pretty crazy when it first came out. Think about the 80's, and compare that to now, there are a lot more kids from every race into metal now, and that's not just a great thing, it's one of the best things. metal is my spirituality, my helping hand when the chips are down, and the music that is played when it's time to celebrate. Metal is the most diverse form of music to spring from rock, and in many respects it dwarfs the rock world because there are so many metal heads mixing with other forms of music. I love that Emperor, Motley Crue, Soulfly, Horse the Band, Deicide, Korn, Tiamat, Cro Mags, Priest, Origin, Moonspell, Ramsses, The Devil's Blood, Alice in Chains etc. are placed under the same banner. May not like all those bands, but diversity gives it something it can't have by itself. More African Americans will embrace it with time just like everybody else has. Hail Hirax by the way!!!!!!!

I was working at a rap show last night (I work for a few venues in town regadless of the music) and a black guy all hip hoped out seen I had a slayer-t under my sweatshit. Unless you were a fan, no one would have known it was a slayer shirt from one coverd up letter. He flashed me the horns and we starting shooting the shit. Cool guy, but I had the sterotype if I looked at him, I would have thought no way he is a metal head. Metal knows no skin color.

Because they're not good at it.

Rap is every bit as valid as metal. Maybe there aren't more black people in metal because they're tired of the bigoted arguments against rap that are frequently made by dumb white people.

Treat all genres with respect if you want yours to be treated with respect. This is basic stuff.

No you're right you don't have to defend yourself, it does take a certain level of talent to rap like it or not people. Anybody who can't see that is just biased on when it comes to their taste in music. Just because you're not into a certain brand of music doesn't mean you can pass it off as talentless.

So they lift samples from other songs to write their music sometimes, big fuckin deal, the rapping itself is where your standard b-boy posuer will fall flat. Have most people who diss hip hop ever tried rapping or writing hip hop lyrics? Probably not, and if they have they're more than likely corny and suck major shit. I won't argue that most of hip hop's subject matter is thought provoking (money, hos and pimpin), especially current hip hop which is brainless but there were truly intelligent pioneers in the game who had talent. Public Enemy for instance wrote about REAL shit, and delivered it in a way that most people wish they could.

And to gamblor, can you improvise a freestyle rap off the top of your head and actually flow? I honestly can't understand how you can dismiss something like that when it comes to talent; really you're just ignorant if you can't give atleast that much credit where it's due. I'm not even all that into rap and even I can admit this much.

yes , I think he actually tried to express in a politically correct way saying African-American because saying it differently would be taken wrong as usual nowadays.

Katon is a great guy by the way and those very few people with african roots that play Heavy Metal are extremely talented, thats why those in Rap and Hip-Hop do what they do, because they are talentless but want to be rich and famous

Doug Pinnick- king's x
Mike Smith-suffocation
Howard Jones- killswitch
Rocky George, and couple of new guys in S.T.
Lajon Witherspoon- sevendust
William Duval- alice in chains
Bonz- x stuck mojo
Slash- half black
guys from God Forbid

not too may more....why is right?

Ah don't forget unofficial one-time Metallica member Lloyd Grant, he may have been the first Afro-American to take part in the thrash metal movement. Some other people here name-dropped Body Count and Living Colour, those are great examples. The Bad Brains were hardcore punk who sometimes borderlined on thrash, I guess they're worth a mention. And how about Derrick Green, the second frontman of Sepultura, I'm surprised the article didn't even give him a mention.

There was also this hilarious all black heavy metal group from the 70's, I think, called Black Death. They were basically just a negro version of Venom.

There's many reasons -one is that of being black and being seen identifying with music/lifestyle seen as white carries a stigma.

As Katon said -misfits/outcasts fit in the Metal crowd and that's a small subset of all ethnic groups -white included.

there was an African American wearing a Burzum t shirt, which is kind of like seeing a white guy wearing Public Enemy t shirts its all for the love of the music. And Why did this article not mention Tony Mac Alpine or ice T and Body Count? Music is open to all people regardless of race or religion ect..

Not too many black people grow up listening to metal. So, why would they pick up an instrument and learn how to play metal?

It's much worse now than it used to be.

Years ago, you did have some black kids that were into metal and eventually became musicians.

Now, forget it! Hip-hop is shoved down everyone's throat. Even a majority of the white kids today want to be rappers and couldn't care any less about metal music.

The racial stereotypes absolutely piss me off, especially with regards to music. If such stereotypes were indeed true, then I would be listening to fuckin' Tejano or Latin pop instead of the likes of Slayer, Priest, Maiden, etc. There's a reason why I listen to metal and not Tejano or Latin pop, and it has NOTHING to do with my ethnicity on either side of my family. It's because I love metal and detest Tejano, Latin pop, and a bunch of other shit. It's as simple as that.

I live in the inner city of Philadelphia and I can tell you that most black kids that I encountered growing up listened to awful music. Mostly mainstream Hip Hop and R&B which has been horrible over the last 15 years.Every once in a while I would hear them listening to some good underground rap but for the most part it was all mainstream Hip Pop bullshit. The white kids had better taste in Hip Hop then the black kids. In the black neighborhoods they are force fed rap from so young that they never really grow out of it. And that could also be said about a lot of white kids. But as I get older I see more black people at shows and more black people in bands then there was when I was growing up. I hope it continues to grow.

Well you know the thing is it's hard to blame black kids from Philadelphia for not being into more rock oriented music seeing as how the Philadelphia and Ohio soul sound of the 60's and 70's pretty much dominated that city. Philadelphia never had a music scene that has rivaled it since. Come to think of it Philadelphia has never had a music scene that I can think of besides the Philly soul movement.

They had a few punk bands in the 80's FOD, Sadistik Exploits, Pagan Babies, YDI (which was fronted by a black kid), one or two hair metal groups (Cinderella and Tangier), a bunch of no-name new wave/pop groups (one of which found success as Hall & Oates) and that was about it. Other than that its all r&b, soul and funk like for instance Philly's greatest export, Fat Larry's Band and the throwback hip hop fusion funk torch bearers of today, The Roots.

I think it's a subconscious thing, really. For the most part, Hip-Hop/R&B songs are built from a foundation of rhythm (drum beats, basically.) On the other hand, Metal songs are, for the most part, built from a harmony stemming from stringed instruments.

Metal songs can be traced back directly to European music, as we all know Metal is pretty much the ugly & deformed cousin of Classical music. Hip-Hop by comparison is the ugly & deformed cousin of Tribal & World music

Of course there are exceptions here & there, but that's my take on why colored people are more likely to identify with Rhythmic based music, and white folk are more drawn to melodic music... it's all part of our heritage.

Anyone with a discriminating ear could easily figure out that if you can take the best of both ideaologies, you'll come up with some great music that can be attractive to anyone, regardless of skin color.

Although Metal is huge, it STILL like an underground club in some areas. If you are African American, I'd advise you to go to a show. I'm in the northeast, and we have a dedicated FEW who come to metal shows. I think it's cool when an ATYPICAL fan shows up such as Elderly, Female(LOL), Etc....

There's a genre of metal called black metal. AC/DC had "Back in Black". Thin Lizzy had "Black Rose". Metallica had "Blackened", "Fade to Black", and the so-called black album. Also, Black Sabbath. Purple's "Black Night". Etc. They are all calling for our black brothers and sisters to join us. It would make for a hipper community. More diverse.

I really do think that the metal crowd should be far more accepting in general. The masses (at least at one point) shit all over metal and refused to acknowledge its credibility. You'd think we'd opt to take the high ground on this one, but no.

As one of the few Black Metal muscians in Seattle Wa, I can say that I have gotten looked at strangely often in my life. But Thats not different really than any other person who's dedicated their lives to metal. I have Katon from Hirax, the whole line up of Living Color, and Mr. Tony MacAlpine. (Congrats on your wedding bro!) And though as a guitarist I have marked Tony as an influence, these are amazing people and musicians who just happen to also be black. It definitely made me feel not so alone. Metal is the life-blood in all of our veins regardless of the exterior color of our skin. If you love the metal, then you are a brother (or sister) of mine. Check out Greg Fulton--who also goes under the name Ian Tafoya--from Znowhite, Cyclone Temple, and Rebels Without Applause.

I Hate...Therefore I Am, and My Friend Lonely are monster Metal albums with Greg Fulton who is African American. He shreds the hell out of most Guitarists (White or Black). I Hate...Therefore I Am is a brilliant Thrash album with a completely original sound. My Friend Lonely Is Awesome too.

Rebels Without Applause is an overlooked band too.

Act Of God from Znowhite is an extemely overlooked Metal album with Greg going under the name Ian Tafoya, and a great chick singer.

Yes Living Colour was a good band too. Never checked out Time's Up, but Vivid and Stain are awesome. The Bass Player on Stain goes off.

Ice-T is one of the best rap artists because of his Heavy Funk influence, and was a pioneer of the genre. Not the biggest Public Enemy fan, but their overall sound is awesome. New Whirl Odor is a good album. Yo! Bumrush The Show is awesome. It Takes A Nation Of Millions is a genre defining album for its time.

The first Body Count album is good, but so was Violent Demise Last Days.

Stuck Mojo is awesome. Pigwalk is completely insane. "Only The Srong Survive," "Down Breeding," "Mental Meltdown," and the title track are Heavy. Snapin' Necks is good too.

I hate the race issue too. Greg Fulton is a killer guitarist though. He is way overlooked. Also, Cyclone Temple's vocals were great too.

However, the rap sound of today sucks compared to that of the 1980's, and the early 1990's.

I like Funk music more than rap especially for the up front Bass sound, but Funk and Soul is what influenced Rap. Rap has strayed away from that influence.

I will stick to Ice-T, Ice Cube, and the first couple of Public Enemy albums. Some of the guest appearances on Cypress Hill albums with Redman, and Method Man are done in good taste. The rapper Kurupt is OK.

Some people are just set in their ways with what they listen to. It is hard to get hardcore Rock and Metal fans into rap. I am just more opened minded than others.

Another talented Rap/Hip Hop group I forgot to mention: The Roots. They play instruments too. If rap music incorporated more Musical instrumentation instead of Sampled beats, and the over use of computer sounds the genre may be more groundbreaking.

Rhythm is an essential part of a good song, and the brothers have it.

Also, there is an issue of Kerrang! Magazine where Robb Flynn from Machine Head lists his favorite Rap albums. I thought that was awesome. Then people thought he was trendy for incorporating Rap into Machine Head's music on The Burning Red, and Supercharger but he did it well.
