Report: Joining SPOTIFY Hasn't Been Good For METALLICA's Sales - Dec. 20, 2012
According to Billboard.biz, the sales of METALLICA's studio albums were negatively impacted by the band's decision to add its catalog to the streaming service Spotify on December 6.

Based on Nielsen SoundScan data for METALLICA's studio albums for four-week periods leading up to Christmas from 2008 to 2012, sales were 15% below expectations the week the titles were added to Spotify and 35% below expectations the following week.

METALLICA sales had jumped 60% to 61% in the four-week period leading up to Christmas in both 2010 and 2011. In 2012 that four-week increase was just 27.2%.

METALLICA has made all nine of its studio albums, as well as various live material, singles, remixes and collaborations, available on Spotify. The move is significant because Sean Parker, who co-founded Napster, now sits on the board of Spotify. METALLICA waged a battle with Napster more than a decade ago over the illegal sharing of the band's music, which resulted in both legal action and a battered public image for the band.

At the press conference in New York announcing the Spotify deal on December 6, Parker and METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich appeared together and seemingly buried the hatchet. Ulrich said, "When [Parker] and I saw each other a few months ago. We could see that we had been put down as adversaries. We realize we had much more in common and sitting down was long overdue . . . We were younger, maybe somewhat more ignorant. We sat down and had a heart to heart."

In a statement at its web site, METALLICA said, "We are extremely proud to be a part of Spotify, who not only has a proven track record, but is by far the best streaming service."

METALLICA is now able to make these deals directly since, as of last month, the band has complete control over the master tapes of all its audio and video recordings. The band has also launched its own label, Blackened Recordings.

The first release for the new label was the "Quebec Magnetic" DVD on December 10, which showcases footage from two Quebec City live performances recorded in 2009.

Physical album sales have been on a steady decline for years. It's ridiculous to claim that Metallica jumping on the Spotify bandwagon has much if any impact on their back catalog sales. Name me one major band that hasn't recently released a new studio album who has shown an increase in back catalog sales in the last half decade.

the previous sales mainly proved profitable to the record company with crumbs left for metallica. Eventhough sales are down, whatever profit they have made this year either via iTunes or Spotify the money directly goes into the pocket of the people running Blackened Recordings AKA Metallica. So they're actually making a crap ton more money than they have in the past. Also I'm sure piracy of Metallica material has significantly gone down since it's more convenient to listen to it via Spotify. Never underestimate the brilliant business mind of one Lars Ulrich, say what you will about his drumming, but the guy knows how to rake in the big bucks

Isn't that the whole point of Spotify? That people can listen to records on Spotify instead of buying them? No wonder sales went down. Now Lars & Co. earn their money through Spotify instead.

And seriously, it's been like two weeks...

Exactly.....It's like Rhapsody....I just download the album on my phone for nothing and as long I'm paying my $15 or whatever a month I never have to buy another album in my life if I don't want too. To me it makes sense as for the cost of one cd a month I have access to everything I want.

So what the fuck do you expect? make a new income from Spotify and increase your CD sales as well? huh? shouldn't be this just obvious that people still buying the black album (why? btw) would now listen to it by streaming... Again BM, posting for the sake of posting is not good idea, would be better to turn a bit picky with your updates... my 2 cents!

Spotify I believe is the answer to stopping illegal downloading. I'll admit I've downloaded a few albums in my time and only ever really purchased albums I loved after downloading them. The only times I dont do that is for bands I trust will deliver without having to listen first - eg new Deftones.

I think most people follow the same ideal as the above. I don't earn a heap of cash to splurg on music, so I buy the albums when I love the piece of art it is. If its trash and I'll listen to it once or twice, then I don't see any harm done, I don't share it with friends, I've never handed out an album I've downloaded to someone in my life.

Then came Spotify.

I pay a subscription and I never have to download an album again. I listen to it there, the artist gets their money, albeit it measly, I determine if I like it and then I buy it if I do.

Same method as above, just now it's not considered illegal.

I do think the bands should get more money for each 'play' though.

What would really make this report more informative is if the overall revenue generated from the recordings as a whole were reported. CD sales are down across the board, but if the band is making that money back through Spotify it's a moot point.

They're still nowhere near bankruptcy... they make much more money off touring, so no big deal. Why do you think they keep touring so much and putting out so little new material?

The question is if they are making more money. Very likely they are because Spotify is substituting mostly for uncompensated access to their music. That is of course expected to cannibalize some record sales too.

True but I think the industry is on the right track.

I think what we'll start to see is once bands are establish they'll leave the record compaines and use strictly digital media to get there music out. As things progress hopefully musicians will start to see more money from the streaming side of it.

P.S.: I doubt Metallica gets the same percentage as say Life of Agony does on these sites. Like anything in life the one's who put butts in the seats get paid the most in the end.

these guys ... once upon a time they mattered ... and then they recorded the black album ... and it's all been down hill since then ... by now we've come to expect the mediocre from these millionaires ... more power to them ... but they should disband ... just stop ... remember, these jokers started the whole napster fiasco ... won't release they catalog on itunes ... jerks ... and aside from trujllo, are lousy musicians ... hetfield is a decent player i guess ... but the other two ... just ... suck ...
