ALICE IN CHAINS: New Song 'Hollow' Available For Streaming - Dec. 18, 2012
A new ALICE IN CHAINS song called "Hollow" can be streamed in the YouTube clip below. The lyric video was created by fans and comprised of images submitted through Instagram.

The audio for "Hollow" will be available on iTunes beginning January 8, followed by the VEVO premiere of the song's official companion video.

ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell recently confirmed to Guitar World that the band has finished recording its fifth studio album and second without original vocalist Layne Staley. The new disc was once again produced by Nick Raskulinecz (FOO FIGHTERS, DEFTONES) and is scheduled for release in the spring.

"I don't think you'll be surprised by anything you hear," Cantrell told Revolver about the new CD's musical direction. "It's us. But it's also really unique. It's got all the elements of any record we've put out, but it's unlike any record we've put out. Basically, it's the next chapter in the ALICE IN CHAINS book, and it's going to be a big one."

The new disc will follow up 2009's "Black Gives Way To Blue", which ended a 14-year gap between studio efforts for the group and featured singer/guitarist William DuVall.

"In my opinion, that record stood up to anything else we've put out in our career. Hopefully, the new album will connect with people in the same way," Cantrell told Guitar World.

DuVall told The Pulse Of Radio while the band was touring behind that album that he was seeing a new generation of ALICE fans at the shows. "There's a lot of young people showing up, so that this thing has become a generational band now," he said. "So you've got people, 15, 16, 17 years old, that are coming of their own volition. I mean, they're not being brought there by their parents or anything. They're coming on their own. They're bringing their friends. So that's one thing that's a real sign that perhaps you're onto something."

ALICE IN CHAINS began working on new material in 2011, but the sessions for the album were delayed when Cantrell had to undergo shoulder surgery.

gamblor must be one of those moron's that can't give up the fact that layne is gone....

layne did it to himself....he was selfish with what he did, so why should the band not have done anything more because of some moron that put himself behind other people....people that relied on him for a paycheck....such as road crew, merch people, his own bandmates, etc.

layne did help make alice in chains good, and his voice was a perfect fit, but come one, he wasn't the band....jerry wrote the majority of the music....in fact, correct me if i am wrong, but i believe jerry co-wrote every song except angry chair, if not writing songs all by himself even.....if anything jerry is the only member of that band that wasn't irreplaceable....

more uninspired and relatively boring music that sounds like leftovers from the Tripod album. What it's missing is the passionate and hauntingly troubled lyrical delivery of Layne. With Layne gone, so is the passion. Anyone who says different doesn't know AIC, or truly appreciate what made them so unique to begin with. This song is generic and uninspiring. Sorry.

Really? So you are the be all end all of what AIC is and what they should and should not do? Funny I have been a fan since i heard the first note on Man in the Box. I absolutely love Layne on all his recordings but he is gone man... I was skeptical as well but I really do believe these guys LOVE playing together bottom line... and they reformed(as if they had a choice on the hiatus) for all the right reasons. I was there for the first gig in Seattle for the Tsunami Benefit in 04' and I still can't wrap my head around amazing of a night it really was. They reformed a one off show to benefit charity and realized what they were missing and I realized what I was missing. Fucking Rock On AIC... Gonna take a listen now...

This band is fortunate that Cantrell harmonizes on a lot of vocals, past and present. This enabled Duvall to seemlessly join the mix.

How many times do we have to hear people comparing AIC with Layne to AIC with DuVall?

I loved AIC with Layne. He died, the band moved on. When DuVall came into the fold and I heard BGWTB, I was floored. Then I saw them live. Floored. It is unfair to compare Layne to DuVall because the man is dead. Get over it.

This is a great AIC song. I hope the new album is as strong as "Hollow".

Aic fans sure are defensive about this band. A ton of praise in a BM article is pretty rare and this thread has it. I see two guys who say they didn't enjoy it and they just get attacked and called names.

Oh you don't like this song, then you are a retard who doesn't understand music and just can't get over the loss of layne. Quite a leap.

Because the reason they gave for not liking the song was Layne's absent. Which is a silly reason since it's obvious he will not be apearing in any AIC song anymore. So they didn't like it even before listening to it.

People have this romantacize image of Layne but the truth is that Jerry was and still is Alice In Chain's heart and soul. This are the facts, Jerry wrote or co-crote like 80% of the material including must of the hits. He was the architect of the sound. Layne's voice was shut since around 93. He quit the band in 94 for some time and after 97 he was on the record on not wanting to be in AIC ever again.

One thing: it is a damn better than the cheesist Styx song ever, Mr Roboto, if that is why you run that user name.....

But perhaps that is not why you run the user name. Just when I saw that name i had flashbacks to that god awful video. Yes, showing my age...haha

I have to hear a song a few times to really pass judegment. Not blown away at all, but sounded decent. Music is taste, so I do not get into a big uproar if some do not like it, that is their taste.

But I loved last CD. Thought it dusted the self titled cd which was lackluster compared to Dirt and Facelift. So that is why I do not buy this no Layne, no AIC as the last Layne cd was okay, not great at all. Think it mostly comes down to the songs Jerry writes.

Look forward to hearing more new AIC

Black Gives Way To Blue is amazing and haunting, I saw them in Tampa and William blew me the fuck away! He is perfect!

Look forward to this...the cover is good as well!!!!

Alice in Chains basically got me through high school back in the 90's. And for me, the thing that really grabbed me was Layne's voice. I understand that Cantrell was the main songwriter for most of the music, but Layne took that music to the next level.

Can you imagine Jar of Flies and Dirt without Layne? They'd still be good songs, but that's all they'd be. Layne made them great. Take "Don't Follow" for example. I think people tolerate the first half of that song because they know Layne is gonna crush it in the second half.

I NEVER listen to Boggy Depot or Degradation Trip. Most of the music just doesn't do anything for me. It's just missing something. Same feeling with this version of Alice in Chains.

It's kind of funny that I just casually listened to a brand new Alice in Chains song. 15 years ago, this would have been the most exciting moment of my life.

Hmm, not bad and not great. Oddly, I found all of the stuff that DuVall either co wrote or did vocals exclusively was the best stuff on the previous album.

I'm not a huge doom metal guy and it looks almost like AIC are plodding into that type of slooooow repetitive territory. I'm still excited to hear the rest of the album though.

not too good, and not too bad by all means. I like William and I wish they would let him rip and not have Jerry drown him out. The black gives way album is awesome but I do have to agree with the post about Layne, there is something missing, Love Jerry and the crew and I'm glad they are here today doing what they are doing but I really listened to AIC because of Layne. I don't care about who wrote what, I think Layne was the main point of uniqueness of the band. And You bet your fucking ass I listened to Don't Follow because of Layne's part. What's the most lame track from the Layne era? (It's over now), cause Layne wasn't singing lead.

thank goodness for Jerry Cantrell's vocals being at the forefront of the harmony. Yes the music will always be AIC but the vocals with Cantrell really keep this from being a bastardized version of the band. It's doing justice to the legacy of the band. That last album was a real tribute to Layne.

......I still want a "Them Bones", but this rebirth has been nice.

==========

You want "Them Bones"? Go dig up Layne Staley!

this song sounds like vintage AIC. Jerry and William harmonizing together is great blend, they even sound like Layne. His spirit is definitely there. If you listen closely, this time William's vocals are turned up.

The verses are great, this song could easily have been on Dirt. Yes, we all know Layne Stayley ruled and was the heart and soul. The songs aren't going to be the same content wise. Mostly everyone from the 90's are fathers and not taking hard drugs like they did in their 20's. They probably are not as angry at the world either.

Its ok I guess. Reminds me more of Cantrells solo stuff though. Guitars take the back seat to the poppy vocals. Verse, chorus, verse chorus. Needs more creative music.

The more I listen to this song, the better it gets. And I was already impressed, I shit you not!
