METALLICA Working On 'Heavy', 'Energetic' New Music - Dec. 18, 2012
METALLICA has finally commenced work on material for the follow-up to 2008's "Death Magnetic" for a tentative 2014 release.

Speaking to Metal Hammer for the magazine's January 2013 issue (order a copy at this location), the band's drummer, Lars Ulrich, described the new music, saying "The stuff that we were banging out yesterday, it felt heavy, it felt energetic, it was loud, it was fast, it was rocking, it was crazy. The snare drum was on there and there were guitar solos, in case anybody was wondering."

He added: "What we're doing now certainly sounds like a continuation of where we left off four years ago."

However, Lars would not confirm that METALICA's next album will once again be helmed by producer Rick Rubin, who worked on "Death Magnetic", telling Metal Hammer: "I love Rick, we all love Rick. We're in touch with Rick constantly. We'll see where it goes."

"Death Magnetic" was METALLICA's last under its contract with Warner Music Group — where the band has been making records since 1984.

METALLICA announced on November 30 that it has taken ownership of all the band's master recordings and long-form videos under a provision of the band's 1994 joint venture agreement with the Warner Music Group. According to that provision — almost unheard of for acts signed to major label contracts — all the masters reverted back to the band. Frontman James Hetfield said in a statement, "We would like to thank everyone at the Warner Music Group for 28 years of a fantastic relationship, particularly since 1994 where we truly felt we had partners in every aspect of our business in North America."

The band has also revealed that it is launching its own label, called Blackened Recordings, that will be the new home for all of their recordings and videos, as well as anything else that the band may come up with. All marketing and promotion will be handled by Blackened, with distribution through Rhino Entertainment in North America and the Universal Music Group internationally. Ulrich said, "Forming Blackened Recordings is the ultimate in independence, giving us 100 percent control and putting us in the driver's seat of our own creative destiny."

Ulrich told The Pulse Of Radio a while back that METALLICA was long past the point where the band needed a corporate record label to support it. "The great thing about being in a band like us is that we're in a position to bypass the record company," he said. "Basically record companies act like banks. And when you don't need the bank element of a record company, then you can kind of do it yourself."

METALLICA is also working on a 3D feature film for release next summer.

He said "The stuff that we were banging out yesterday... it was LOUD...." - hopefully it won't be so LOUD as fuck like the "Deaf Magnetic" with all that terrible compression and clipping... Without any doubts - this old idiot Rubin brings extreme "loudness war" today everywhere, on the every fucking record he producing.

Metallica were a big part of my life when i was younger, but they fucked up royally in the nineties and never got back on track. Here in Sweden they still draw massive crowds, but its sad these days, they seem to have lost what they once had completely. Maybe Andy Sneap could kick their asses enough to produce a final great album. But lets not keep our hopes up.

I guess Im not too 'kvlt' to admit that I liked Death Magnetic. Even though lulu was a disaster, some of the riffs were acutally decent. While I like Rick Rubin, I think Metallica needs a producer who is more hands on. Andy Sneap, Nick Raskulinecz, Kevin Shirley, Terry Date, Butch Vig, Colin Richardson.

But thats wishful thinking

...although I'm not about to put it into the same category as their early albums, it's certainly better than St. Anger. or the Load albums.

The sad thing is, Metallica was this indestructible beast back-in-the-day, they could do no wrong. Even though they *seem* to be back on track, there's still a bunmch of problems:

- trying too hard to write 10 minute songs...songs have to flow naturally. Don't write them long "just because".

- James' singing

- Lars' drumming

Whatever, they'll come out w/ a new album, I'll buy it, initially dig it then nitpick it to death.

There is not a damn thing wrong about Lars' drumming- he has a unique style-meaning you can tell its him- and thats a great thing to have in music. He's no Neil Peart but he is an incredible talent. Once again, here is a "cool guy" who wants to rip on the drumming because he heard other "cool and hip" people doing it...get lost...jizz

It doesn't wanna be a continuation of DM cos' its wank over long and self indulgent crap, check out "the real death magnetic" on youtube somebody's edited 2 or 3 minutes off every track an it sounds a lot more of a cohesive album.
Also get a producer in like Andy Sneap, someone who will make the band work, the album would be out next year then, god knows why it takes em' so long to make an album.

Death Magnetic was the first Metallica album i bought since the Black Album lost my fandom... i was pleasantly surprised: Justice-era riffing (to my ears) in parts, fast tempos, more of a barking singing style from James rather than his shitty crooning of the last two decades, times changes...

so, my $.02 as a fan since the early 80s:

- continue the chunky faster palm-muted riffing; James is the god of that
- ensure James "barks" more than croons
- play fast
- mix up the tempos and don't feel compelled to write a four-minute radio-friendly song with the same tempo throughout, ala "Sandman"
- change producers: lose clipping as well as the "garagey" drum sound; don't go all the way to Andy Sneap super-dry, but you're not 90s alt band who needs massive shitty reverb
- get Lars to listen to Master and Justice over and over and to play every song perfectly on both those albums (except maybe "Dyer's Eve": i heard he couldn't play the double bass correctly live even back in the late 80s)

Lars was once an interesting drummer who added a lot to this once-mighty band; he can do it again if he commits to it; start practicing, dude; you're slipped a lot but can get it back

my $.02.

DM was ok, has some good moments but sounds forced in many spots. Additionally, *** IMFO***, James needs to find his growl again, lose his "singing" voice. No expectations, though would be nice to be surprised, as I was by Anthrax and Testament brought it with their latest efforts.

Just say no to the master of sonic disaster. Even Ted Jensen - head engineer at Sterling Sound and, the guy who mastered Death Magnetic, said (in reaction to the many complaints about the sound of the album):

"I'm certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick-walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here.

"Believe me I'm not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else."

Now that they own their own rights, hopefully turn up the bass on that bad boy.

Sounds like the same garbage that Lars says before every album they've released. I hope they manage to find their way again but I'm not going to hold my breath.

even if the music is great instrumentally it will still have james' horrible singing over it,so there really is no hope of a great album like they made in the 80's

And they'd need a real drummer for an instrumentally great album. Pretty sure Rick Allen could handle Lars' drum parts.

So...according to bmacdaddy, if you don't like Metallica, you're a poser and automatically a big death metaller. Okay, that totally makes sense. What a turd.

I get what you're saying, kid:"everyone who disagrees with me is wrong and stupid". You're basically a garden-variety pop fan, it's just that your pop band is Metallica.

I wonder if hed sign an album deal with Blackened Recordings? Hopefully they will not use Rick Rubin for the new album. They should try Andy Sneap or Cllin Richardson

It's weird how this band has to mention that their next album is going to be heavy and have guitar solos. And the press makes it sound like it's a big thing.

For any other real metal band, this would be a given.

Death Magnetic was a beast record... at first i thought "that's it, these boys can do no better than DM, best album of all time".

Then they came with Lulu and my mind was blown, not once human kind has had the chance to listen to something so amazing...

Folks I don't think they'll ever put out anything as good as Lulu.

Recently heard death magnetic for the first time, actually. Noone was a bigger Metallica fan than me -85 'till -92.

Death Magnetic sounds like the same old songs all over again. Some great new riffs, but no new ideas? Boring.

At least Lulu sounds new and exciting... :-)

Now I see why it took so long for a new record, they wanted to finish their deal with Warner first. Very smart of them not to waste their catalog on Playboy wives and mentions first, taking care of their ownership. Hope they will start making records more often from now on then.

I thought the headline said heavy generic new music.

By the way, Jamez, Larz, and Kirk should go listen to Newsteads new stuff...yeah thats right...that badass could still be in the band and lighting a fire under their lazy asses.

An album in the vein of Death Magnetic, but produced by someone like Andy Sneap, Flemming Rasmussen or even Peter Tagtgren would be really nice.

They haven't put out a good album in over 2 decades. St Anger and Death Magnetic were garbage with poor song-writing and even worse production but people suck it up because it says "Metallica" on it. Great if you like what they do, but let's not pretend they're putting any effort into the music anymore. They know people will buy anything they do. When bands who make 1/10th what Metallica does can put out better music production-wise, that should tell you how little they care or try.

There is nothing wrong with Rubin. He has never fu*ked Slayer up.

The problem is his engineers. They are younger than him and the band and go for the sound we got on DM which the dumb motherfuckers with smart phones like..

I really think it would be nice to see Metallica bring FLEMMING RASMUSSEN back into the fold. He was a major contributing factor in the first 4 Metallica albums sounding as great as they did, and not to mention he is familiar with working with them. I think it would bring that classic sound back to Metallica's music especially with the available technology nowadays!
