MEGADETH Resumes Work On New Studio Album - Dec. 17, 2012
MEGADETH has resumed work on its fourteenth studio album with producer Johnny K (full name: John Karkazis), who has previously worked with DISTURBED, SEVENDUST, MACHINE HEAD and STAIND. The CD is tentatively due in early 2013 via an as-yet-undisclosed label following MEGADETH's recent split with Roadrunner Records.

Mustaine previously told NME about the direction of MEGADETH's new material, "Some of it's a little darker, some of it's a little faster. Being in this position right now, not knowing where we're gonna go or what we're gonna do, it's kind of like the world's ours to do what we want. Are we gonna go back to the speed and thrash metal roots that made us who we are? Are we gonna experiment and rely on the melody that we've discovered in MEGADETH songs?"

Mustaine also spoke about how he likes to keep MEGADETH's music more melodic than that of most thrash bands. "We've tried to do that in MEGADETH, have a little melody so that it's not just the same old grinding music like everybody else has," he said. "We're just happy to get going and get to the studio."

Johnny K produced MEGADETH's last album, 2011's "TH1RT3EN", which was recorded at Mustaine's Vic's Garage studio in San Marcos, California. Mustaine previously stated about the recording process for "TH1RT3EN", "We've got a great new partner with Johnny K. I mean, I was satisfied with our last co-producer, with Andy Sneap, and Andy really took us — and he even admits — as far as he could take us, and it was great because we wanted to go back to the big leagues where we were, and we feel that Johnny is, obviously, a big-league producer; not that Andy isn't — don't get me wrong. But we feel that this record is definitely one of our best. It's a great feeling, because, you know, finishing some of the last record, I can honestly say, in my heart I knew that it wouldn't contend with some of the great records in the past, just because of the timing, the label that we were on and stuff like that. Lineup changes and stuff… But I really think that everything just lined up for this record."

"TH1RT3EN", sold 42,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 11 on The Billboard 200 chart.

The CD marked the recorded return of bassist David Ellefson who was part of the band's classic lineup from 1983 to 2002. In a move that delighted the band's legion of diehards, Ellefson returned to performing live with MEGADETH in early 2010 and has remained a fixture on the stage ever since. This was the first time Ellefson has played on a MEGADETH record since 2002's "Rude Awakening".

I'm glad to hear Mustaine wants the music to be kept melodic yet heavy at the same time. 13 was a great record but i still hope they go a bit heavier than that though.

At this point, I'm just glad Dave and crew are headed back so soon into the studio. Th1rt3en was a decent album, while Endgame was exceptional.

I wish Dave would get past worrying about how well the record company will or won't promote his albums and just get out there and play the shit out of some new tunes!

The "anniversary" tours have been awesome, but I'm starving to hear some other tunes from the past two albums live!!! Get out there and road test this stuff already!

His band is as tight as ever and they sound absolutely great live. Can't wait to hear what this album has in store, just hoping to hear it performed as well. I can hold off on a So Far So Good 25th anniversary at the moment....

I am amazed at how soon they are going back in the studio. look forward to it, while I like Melodic, I don't see why we can't keep the melodies as well as fresh new thrash.

just for telling it like it is.

Megadeth was my favorite band for the last 20 years of my life, but as of late I just can't fucking take it anymore. Dave's fat fucking mouth has completely turned me off of his band. The guy is the biggest fucking idiot and asshole to ever disgrace the Metal scene. Smug, arrogant, pious, ignorant, self-righteous, vindictive, prick.

excuse me, but there's 3 other members in the band. who the hell cares what his beliefs are. just because he voices them doesnt mean you can't like the music they make. Im sure MANY artists have more fucked up beliefs but because theyre not publicized everyone believes they have the same opinions as you. Plus, Mustaine being fucked up on drugs for years doesn't help either.

They should have stuck with Andy Sneap, Johnny K's production on 13 was a little weak. 13 was a good album but fell well short of Endgame. Hopefully they can go back the more thrashy stuff.

Even Sneap couldn't make Mundane listenable. He was smart to jump off this sinking ship and make the best metal records in the last 20 years.

"producer Johnny K (full name: John Karkazis), who has previously worked with DISTURBED, SEVENDUST, MACHINE HEAD and STAIND"
Once again it will be slower rock tunes with which they'll aim to appear on modern rock radio - wouldn't count on thrash etc.

I don't know what's more cringe-inducing - Dave Mudstain's whiny voice or his awkward lyrics: "Pull over shithead, it's the cops", "Hello me, nice talking to myself", etc. Ughh...

Come to think of it, must be his current FUCKED-UP political beliefs.

Mustaine has always railed against injustice & hypocrisy in his lyrics. It's hilarious to see the reaction of the whiny lefties on here who always assumed he was railing against conservatives. The lefties can barely contain their hatred and confusion.

I'm sure Dave Mustaine is a poster boy for conservatism, relying hugely on his gut (Karl Rove would be jealous) and making wild statements about everything. It's true he has never really sided with one party, but he used to be anti-establishment, now he seems to be a conspiracy theorist. I don't give a crap even if he voted for Romney, he needs to lay off the narcotics.

"Are we gonna go back to the speed and thrash metal roots that made us who we are?"

Nope. And I'll bet the bank on that. If it is thrashy, it will be generic thrashy, with no fire or technical precision.

My prediction:

At least one song mentioning the 'devil'.
At least one song containing lots of non-subtle political rhetoric.
At least one song about a social issue the average Megadeth listener could not care less about.
At least two-three songs that will be boring, mid-range tempo filler.

I think Drover is an OK drummer, but the recorded sound of his kit sucks ass. There's hardly any low end, the snare sounds like shit, and everything else sounds electronic. No depth. I look to great drum sounds like "Seasons in the Abyss", or even "And Justice for All" to compare to. Even the the new Testament album drums sound better than Drover's recordings. More fat end, more snare depth. Everything else with the albums has been ok.

It's funny how angry people get when Dave opens his mouth about political issues today.

Never mind weather you agree with him or not. Can we at least agree that Megadeth's biggest hits are also politically charged?

- Peace Sells...
- Holy Wars
- Hangar 18
- Symphony of Destruction

I've actually really enjoyed going back and listening to United Abnominations recently. That album was kind of his new-era peak in terms of political statements is concerned. It doesn't even matter if I agree with him or not, it's great to see someone with that kind of passion putting their opinions out there.

I'm hoping for some great thrash, but I know the politics will likely make an appearance. So what.
