Former METALLICA Bassist JASON NEWSTED Releases Video Update From The Studio - Dec. 11, 2012
Former METALLICA, VOIVOD and FLOTSAM AND JETSAM bassist Jason Newsted has posted a new one-minute video update from his recording studio in Walnut Creek, California where he is recording the first music from his new band.

Commented Jason: "I've got a new heavy band together that bears my name — NEWSTED, like that — and I'm singing lead vocals and playing bass again. And we're busy working on our second batch of new songs that we'll be sharing with you soon, but our first batch of songs is ready to go. So instead of a standard press release, I would your help to get the word out to all metal fans and all our friends around the globe. So come along and join my crew by signing up at NewstedHeavyMetal.com to receive exclusive details on upcoming releases of our new songs."

In a recent interview with Eddie Trunk's "Friday Night Rocks" radio show on New York's Q104.3 FM, Newsted stated about his plans to release original music via his newly launched official web site, "Whatever it ends up being — if it's five songs, 20 songs, 50 songs… I don't even know what the heck I'm gonna do. I have so much music from over the years. I have a bunch of new stuff, I have so many mixes of projects with people — new players, young players, old-school players like myself — so I'm just trying to figure out exactly what I wanna unleash on everybody first. That's kind of what it's coming down to — the timing of things and how I wanna hit people with it, and which stuff [to release first]."

Asked how he plans to release his music, Jason said, "I see a couple of the old avenues still being there that will always be there in the purest form — making the vinyl and everybody having the special-edition vinyl to be able to read the lyrics, stuff like you and I loved the most, that's the closest to us that's the most endearing and the most personal. So that's always gonna be there and I never wanna dismiss that, so that will be percentage of it for the fans that really dig the real American kick-ass guitar music … And then the newest avenues that I'm just really now learning about as I expose myself to all this stuff… I saw a piece of one of ['That Metal Show' espisodes on VH1 Classic] and somebody talked about DOWN and some other bands doing four tracks at a time in EP form every few months, letting people have some fresh metal. I think that's a pretty good concept, a pretty good formula — I'm hip to that, [and] I'd like to warm up to that. Since it is new territory for me, I'm really open to that idea; I think it's a good way to spread stuff."

Newsted married his longtime girlfriend Nicole Leigh Smith in October.

In his acceptance speech at METALLICA's Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction in April 2009, Jason thanked Nicole — whom he referred to as "the love of my life" — for "standing by me through the last seven years of challenges and adventures."

Don't forget, he was with Mesuckica when they hit rock bottom in the Gay 90s.

It's a shame that there's no bass on A.J.F.A.

Honestly, I've heard the songs with bass that people have posted over the years on youtube. They ruin the songs in my humble opinion. The bass-y sounding guitars along with the heavy drums make up for it.

I don't think you have to announce him as Metallica's former bass player... People know him..

And considering the drive the guy has, this is bound to be pretty interesting stuff. No one can question his conviction.

I guess most of his metal cred comes from his run with rockstar supernova, but I might be wrong

Jason rules.

Though, I can't help but feel Metallica had him under some kinda legal restraint for the last decade that prevented him from releasing new music under his own name... #conspiracytheory

Very surprised but NEWSTEAD sounds like HELLYEAH !!

I really thought he left music behind, he faded away after dabbling in a few unheavy rock and TV bands and doing his weird fantasy funder stint in Voivod.

I dunno what Jason's deal is but he sends some confusing signals. He acts like bein in Metallica was this big traumatizing hassle. Now he's rich as fuck and he doesn't know what to do with himself. Well show us the amazing shit Tallica wouldn't let ya do already! Poppah Wheelie - what the hell was that??? Better than Echobrain? Well yeah, that's like sayin "better than garbage." Jason needs to put out or shut up and enjoy his millions and pretend he's still this regular dude from the burbs...

Financially speaking not the wisest career decision, but at least the man kept his artistic integrity when he walked away from that steaming pile when he did.

Metallica died after Justice
RIP Metallica 1983-1989

I am with you above. Metallica died after ..And Justice for All

The only great album Newsted ever played on was that album and rumor has it he wasn't even really on it.

So in reality the Newsted era of Metallica was total garbage. Not sure where all the high praise comes from. It's not like he was some kind of saving grace to Metallica. Each album he played on got worse and worse.

All of that aside. These new clips are fucking terrible. He calls it 'newsted heavy metal' it sounds more like 'newsted hard rock for shit kickers'

to blame Jason for ANYTHING metallica did good or bad during his time is the band is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. IT IS PRETTY WELL KNOWN that ANY ideas Jason had were shot down and he was pushed off to the side. and dont forget before metallica he was in a pretty bad ass little band you may have heard of FLOTSAM AND JETSOM!

I must agree with a poster above, this doesn't sound like heavy metal at all, it sounds like hard rock at best. I'm not expecting any blastbeats and death vocals out of him but at least something somewhat brutal.

I think it sounds a bit like Motörhead, and that can never be a bad thing.

The reason he hasn't released heavy music in his own name since Metallic is that he has not been well, I think. He has dealt with a lot of things he said somewhere. Glad to see him back in a good mood. I really think this will work out great for him. I like what I've heard so far.
