MEGADETH Parts Ways With ROADRUNNER RECORDS - Dec. 10, 2012
MEGADETH has apparently decided against re-signing with Roadrunner Records for the follow-up to last year's "TH1RT3EN". Writing on his official Twitter account, MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine stated, "Today [Sunday, December 9] marks the end of an era with Roadrunner @rrusa. Hopefully we can finish strong with a #Grammy."

MEGADETH has released three studio albums through Roadrunner: 2007's "United Abominations", 2009's "Engame" and the aforementioned "TH1RT3EN".

In 2009, Mustaine blasted Roadrunner in an online post, writing, "Kudos, Roadrunner, the is the first worldwide critically acclaimed record by the press, and the fans, and you just can't seem to get this right. This is the first time that everyone likes a record of mine, and you can't get us on the radio or into the stores.

"I can't tell you how many stores I go into while on tour and I see nothing. And all I hear from [Roadrunner] is, 'We are committed to the record.'

"My ass."

A year later, Mustaine wrote, "We're getting ready to start the next MEGADETH record in January and the funny thing is my manager is telling me now how Roadrunner is going out of their way now to try and give me this new huge deal, and I just don't want it. I don't want it. The treatment's been terrible over the years, and I just don't want it. I would rather retire than continue to play like that. Either we're gonna release digitally or [see] what happens next. We've got this last record [that we owe to] Roadrunner [as part of our current contract]; it's gonna be a great record 'cause the songs are really, really good. 'Cause I don't want my side of the bargain to be tainted — I wanna be a gentleman and be respectful and deliver my side of the deal, whether or not the other party has or not."

"TH1RT3EN" has sold around 119,000 copies in the United States since its November 2011 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. A track from the CD, "Whose Life (Is It Anyways?)", is nominated in the "Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance" category at the 55th annual Grammy Awards, which will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Regardless of how much I dislike Dave, and how pissed I still was at the time that Ellefson wasn't in the band, Endgame is a phenomenal record. Absolutely loved it. I remember going out and shoveling snow from my driveway that December, and the only thing that made it fun was the sounds of Headcrusher blasting in my ears! But seriously Mustaine, stick to music and just shut up on stage. I mean hey, if you took out all the time you ramble at shows, maybe you could fit another song from Endgame on the setlist!!!

Nuclear Blast makes total sense since they already have:

- Exodus
- Testament
- Death Angel
- Sepultura
- Overkill
- Forbidden
- Kreator
- Anthrax
- Flotsam & Jetsam
- Destruction
- Heathen

... I'd like to see that happen.

Wow, Megadeth still has a label?!? It surprises me to see they are still even around... I saw them open for Slayer a few years ago. First they were blown away when they had to follow Testament and then they unsuccessfully faced the Slayer.

While he may have a point about the record company, please don't try and make it sound like Th1rt3en was actually a good record. Definitely can't say all this stuff about keeping his end hof the bargain. I don't blame him for it if they didn't promote the band, but just don't say blatantly dishonest things please.

After an unsuccessful album, and Dave constantly shooting himself in the foot with the fans (take note of how many shows were not sold out on the current club tour), maybe Roadrunner was just tired of losing money on him.

When Bieber comes out with a new record there are commercials. When he goes on tour, more commercials. Anything he does, commercials. It's called advertising! Metal labels just don't do it and that's why Megadeth sold less than 200K of their latest. Yes I know they released an album but if I saw a commercial with song samples and a video clip and the songs were kick ass, I would have bought it. No I'm not going to go on name reputation alone because old bands suck usually and I just figure this will too. Seems like the smaller labels are always a step behind the big boys.

Gee, ever wondered what advertising costs? If you're projected to sell millions, you will still get a profit despite blowing hundreds of thousands on commercials. If you're promoting Megadeth, honestly, how many people do you expect to reach by advertising during Teen Mom or on CNN? Besides; 'always' would be wrong, since Capitol actually made commercials for Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction. Or are you telling me advertisement doesn't always work? Hmm..

Dave, reality check:

You no longer have the drive, passion or anger to write Thrash Metal.

Technical chops aren't helping you out and neither hired guns on lead guitar or drums will help improve a dead formula. You made a fool of yourself recently with your political and religious rants.

Just call it quits while you still have people interested in your back catalogue. Tour a year or two on your past glories, cash-in and retire.

I don't get this old school mentality of some of these older established bands still looking for a "record deal" and blaming them on a failure of an album.

Dave, you are in Megadeth a band that has been around for decades and have an already established fanbase who are followng your carreer and are going to pick up your latest release regardless. Chances are the 120k people who picked up 13 (which is a pretty impressive number these days) are your core fans and i seriously doubt lots of those units sold are from new fans or people who heard you on a radio.

You are almost considered a "brand name" at this point, so if you want that deal for that advance, go for it but i honestly think if you recorded and released an album yourself without label support/promo even digitally you would be fine and you can keep the $$ from that 120k units yourself. Trust me, you release an album your fans will know and trades and sites like BB are gonna get the word out.

Why do you think your old bandmates are doing their own thing now, you think Metallica needs to advertise at this point? It's like Coca Cola advertising...

That's why it didn't sell as good. Because the fans hear about it being not as good as Endgame, then decide not to get it. Don't blame the record label for your blunders Dave. And with that song, it's unlikely they're gonna win the grammy. But who knows.

I have boycotted RR since 1998.
They screwed so many bands over. Sign them and never back them.
Whilst signed to RR, Both Worlds announced a tour in 98 and I booked a hotel and travel expenses were paid beforehand.
RR refused to back them and the tour was canceled.
I lost money and decided to forever boycott the cunts.
