STEVEN ADLER On His New Band ADLER: 'I Just Love Being Part Of A Team' - Dec. 6, 2012
Joe Daly of The Nervous Breakdown recently conducted an interview with ADLER members Steven Adler (drums; also formerly of GUNS N' ROSES) and Lonny Paul (guitar). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

The Nervous Breakdown: You recently said that you haven't been this excited about playing music since your days in GUNS N' ROSES. What is it about this lineup that's so different?

Steven: It's just a great team. Growing up and having Slash as a best friend, I couldn't have been more blessed. But to meet someone when you're forty seven years old, like I did with Lonny Paul, to have another best friend when you're forty seven is a double-blessing. I just love being part of a team. I love that camaraderie where we're all on the same page, we're all after the same goal… we're like a Super Bowl team! We're trying to get to the Super Bowl, which for us is the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

The Nervous Breakdown: Speaking of that, the last time I saw you was on the day that you received word that GUNS N' ROSES had been nominated for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. You walked into the Rainbow that morning, having just received the call. Looking back now, having been inducted, how did it all go down for you, personally?

Steven: I couldn't have asked for a better way to end that chapter of my life. And now, with this new record and new band, I couldn't have asked for a better way to start the new chapter of my life.

The Nervous Breakdown: When you sat down to put ADLER together, did you give any thought to how it might relate to your GN'R legacy? Specifically, was there a conscious decision to avoid sounding too much like "Appetite For Destruction"?

Steven: It didn't even enter my thinking. Of course, there's nothing wrong with the GUNS sound; I love the GUNS sound and I'm proud of the GUNS sound. But that was five different guys. And now there's four different guys that I'm working with now, and this is what we came up with and we had a blast making it. I just hope that the people listening to the record can hear the fun and the excitement and the passion that we had making this record. We're hoping you can hear that.

The Nervous Breakdown: Slash guested on this album (on the song "Just Don't Ask"). Steven, didn't you teach Slash his very first guitar chord?

Steven: Yeah, I first met Slash in junior high school. After we met up, we went to my grandmother's, where I lived off of Fairfax and Santa Monica. I had a little amplifier and a little cheap guitar and I knew two chords and two scales and he came over my house and we went into my grandpa's room and put my KISS record on, turned the little amplifier up and I did these crazy little Ace Frehley moves. I showed him the two chords and two scales that I knew and within a week he was already playing and writing songs. He's brilliant, and I couldn't have asked for a better best friend growing up.

The Nervous Breakdown: With everything that you guys have been through, together and separately, what was it like to finally play with him again?

Steven: It was the best way to start this new chapter of my life. He wouldn't let me watch him record… once he got there, we said hi, and he said, "Get out!" [laughs] But I didn't get out. I was hiding in the laundry room, right next to him. I was right next to his room! It was great. It made me feel good because he's very particular about who he works with. He wouldn't work with me in the past because of my addiction problems, and he just doesn't want to be around it. So for me, to have got myself to a place in my life where he's willing to come around me and wanting to be around me, I couldn't be happier and more proud. Things have changed. I'll tell you, the biggest change was when Dr. Drew got a hold of Slash and I got the opportunity to apologize to Slash for blaming him for everything that happened in my life. Once I took responsibility for my own actions and started making amends, everything in my life became so much easier. Of course, I still have issues but that's to be expected; I did drugs for thirty five years! It's like going in the ring with Manny Pacquiao; it's gonna take some time to heal after they kick you out of the ring. [laughs] It's just nice that I got to the point of my healing where Slash is wanting to be a part of my life again, and to have him work with me is a plus.

If this band were a real team under THAT name, then everyone would have the sirname Adler, dumbskull. Now it's just you, your ego need for exposure and three poor musicians that don't believe enugh of themselves.

I might be amongst a minority in thinking this, but I am happy to see Adler recovered and taking a new band out on the touring circuit. I'm a casual fan of GNR, and not really a fan of his new music, but spiralling downwards with drugs and blaming everyone else for your problems, and thus alienating all of them, is something I would not wish upon anyone -- glad to see that he at least appears to have avoided it.

Well said. I agree, man. It never was really that fun watching Steven fall into an abyss of drugs for that long. He seems like a genuinely good dude, and it's awesome to see him getting his shit together and doing what he does best: playing drums the way only he can within a band again. Good for you, Steven. Keep up the good work. Peace.

Seriously GothCthulhu - In this industry you work with what you have to get any kind of exposure. If that means naming the band after one band member because that particular band member is more well known... Kudos to him for using it. He was the drummer in one of the greatest hard rockin bands of all time (imo) so he deserves to use his name a bit to help his project.... he would be afterall the primary force behind the band.....

Sixx AM is named after the bass player who isn't the singer, and noone else in the band has the sirname Sixx....

Slash's Snakepit is named after the guitar player who isn't the singer, and noone else in the band was known as Slash.....

Get over yourself dude!

I agree with you, but on the other hand, I see what Gothcthulhu(what?) is saying. In Adler's case, he's trying to peddle his band, and his name is a selling point. as you suggested..but what he's saying, and I agree as well, if its really a great band, great supporting cast that have their own things to say musically, the Adler name is limiting...but obviously Adler isn't going to light the charts on fire and play arenas. It is what it is...(alder is better than adler's appetite at least, in name).

Using the Slash's Snakepit analogy, that was more a band that he put together to record, and play clubs etc. I dont' think he ever saw it getting much bigger. Velvet Revolver was another story, not called Slash's VR or Weiland's VR. It was a band with many key contributors.

Its good Adler's back out, feeling good about himself, not hung up on the past, and staying clean, moving forward with life. He actually sounds coherent in interviews, the handicaps of the stroke are lessening. I used to think it would be a joke to have him apart of any reunion if it happened, but now he seems like he could handle it, at least mentally. Not sure about his drumming. (I haven't seen him live).

Mick Fleetwood is another drummer that organized a group called Fleedwood mac where the other members write most of the music.
So Gothcthulhu everyone in that group should have his surname as well.
Way to go Steven !!

Adler's Appettite had more potential than this. This sounds like the 2012 equivalent of having Bon Jovi help you write something in the late 80's.

call Adler a perpetual knucklehead, but started cutting him some slack as I would not want to walk in another man's shoes. However, I could not spend a dime on a legitimate download of this music. GNR in its original manifestation is dead. The GNR legacy thing is kinda like elect me because I am a Kennedy. I like you Stevie but no free pass as an artist from this music buying customer.

I have my own opinions about Steven Adler as a person, mostly negative. But the new album is just fucking killer. It's a straight up rock record that sounds amazing. You really can't argue with that. The new band fucking rocks!

"Velvet Revolver was another story, not called Slash's VR or Weiland's VR"

get your head out of your ass dude. Ex members of GUNS AND ROSES call their band "Velvet Revolver" and you say it's a "different story"??!? When they picked that name they were obviously aiming for the closest to "Guns and Roses" they could ever get because- guess what- that band was huge, and they were part of it- same thing with Adler.

Haha, I can see slash and duff getting in a room to pick the name from a list like this:

- Flowers and Shotguns
- Tender Magnum
- Hard but soft because we're clever
- A Magnum made of Kittie Skin
- Velvet Revolver

I think that maybe he means because there was more than one G N' R alumni within Velvet Revolver, that there'd be no need to name the band something like "Slash & Duff's Velvet Revolver". A bigger scale sort of touring and recording vehicle.

The sad fact is, is that not enough people (younger generations) know (or worse yet, care) that there was an original Guns N' Roses before this current line-up. Some people just don't care about that sort of thing: they just wanna go to the gig, see and hear the songs live and be part of something.

The cool thing though is that younger kids are discovering for themselves the timeless cool of vinyl. Playing a vinyl album shows you naturally how to appreciate an album as a full album experience..

Slash's Snakepit, Adler/Adler's Appetite... Any little bit of marquee value helps these days. The main source of money is gigging. No one makes money on new albums anymore.

Well, anyway, I'm happy for Steven. He finally seems to have steered himself in the right direction and I'm really proud of him for that. Rock on, Steven.

\m/

stop nit-picking dude, it's the nature of the business. If your name is Steven Adler, you'd name your band something related to either yourself, or Guns N Roses- that is, if you want actual people to show up at your gigs...

Certainly I agree with you, nobody gives a fuck about Guns anymore- new or old- only the older generations. But that's entirely their business. It's no more Axl's fault than Slash, or the others. They all played a part in the demise of that band.

So what if the band called Adler?

It was most likely choosen because of name recognition that will make it easier to sell tickets. It doesnt mean it doesnt feel like a team.

btw, even if a band doesnt have a persons last name, every team has a captain, and every band has a band leader more or less.
