LAMB OF GOD Bassist: Czech Fan 'Never Should Have Been On Stage In The First Place' - Dec. 4, 2012
John Serba of MLive.com recently conducted an interview with bassist John Campbell of Richmond, Virginia metallers LAMB OF GOD. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

MLive.com: Does [the] incident [in the Czech Republic where a fan lost his life after attending a LAMB OF GOD concert] reflect upon the issue of safety at live concerts?

Campbell: It was a tragic event that happened. It's not the first time somebody jumped off stage — I've done it myself, when I was younger.

MLive.com: I have, too.

Campbell: We should count ourselves lucky, then, and take a moment to pause and reflect on a life that was lost. I don't want to lose focus on that.

MLive.com: I understand you have to be careful about not turning one unusual, individual incident into a bigger issue. Fans jump on stage and dive off at concerts every day.

Campbell: Yeah. In this day and age, though, I'd prefer not to have people on stage. People pay to see us perform, and that's not part of the production we have planned. It's not about a guy jumping on stage and flapping his arms and jumping off. And then there's that one time where a guy got on stage and murdered [former PANTERA guitarist] Darrell Abbott. In my opinion, [the Czech man] never should have been on stage in the first place.

MLive.com: How did the fundraiser for Randy [Blythe, LAMB OF GOD singer] go?

Campbell: That was great. I parted with some items – I have personal attachments to the basses I play on stage. I took my two favorite basses and donated them to the auction, and donated a painting that Dave Brockie from GWAR made of Oderus [Brockie's on-stage persona] running a sword through me. [laughs] Personally, I was overwhelmed with how much support we received, and we raised a decent amount of money. We're potentially staring down the barrel of a very expensive trial…I've been told there's another auction being planned with more donated items from friends and bands.

Would like to see them use their influence to help out Randy, like when Napster occurred. This would be the right thing to do since they are the biggest band in the world and happen to play heavy metal. When Metallica speaks, people listen.

So let me get this straight, fan goes up on stage which happens at almost every metal show and it's okay that they died because he shouldn't have been on stage? I've seen plenty of front men making sure security went easy on these offenders but Randy Blythe shows blatant disregard for the fan's safety by helping the security guy push him off the stage? I get that you may like LoG but that doesn't absolve Randy for contributing to a fan's death.

Actually SCORPYIN, it is. Many bands have touring scurity and it is the job of the band or management team to breif local security. This is a standerd practice.

and this is the problem, its not up to the band to make sure everything is SECURE and safe, that's why you hire security to help... if you're gonna just charge the singer whenever something goes wrong, then would you even have security in the first place?

Youd have a point if randy went and stomped the kid on stage.... But he didn't, charging randy does nothing to help anyone, charging security gives other that and other security guards the extra kick in the pants to DO THEIR JOB!!

(Rolls eyes) it's up to the band to let security know the needs and wishes. Some bands don't want security, others do. You have no idea what you are talking about.

lol i just did and you continue to ignore it.. so what, everytime you hire security you have to make them sign as part of their job description, NO ONE CAN DIE now? you're point is just as if not more stupid than mine, at least my solution would eventually lead to a change rather than just saying, oh, fuck it, things dont work that way.... use your head next time

My point was a fact, yours is a suggestion, big diffrence. You said it's not up to the band, it partly is. You are saying charge scurity because they did not do the job, it makes no sense kid.

Lack of security, issues with the venue, on foreign territory..

That whole hardcore mentality of sharing the stage with the people is crap. What the hell are people doing onstage other than trying to get their few seconds of fame? Do you see people getting onstage at other concerts? Are metalheads that retarded so they don,t understand that the stage is NOT where they belong unless they have their own band?

The guy died, sad thing, but he was looking for trouble, in the first place.

I feel Santa is incorrect in his statements. Fans are still getting up on stage at almost every single metal show I go to and no one is ever killed jumping into the crowd.

I just went to see Killswitch Engage & Shadows Fall. Fans were jumping on stage the entire show. Brian Fair himself stage dived and invited fans up on stage by saying "our stage is your stage!".

What was the difference? Unlike Randy, Jesse Leach and Brian Fair didn't put their hands on any of the stagedivers and visibly shove them full force off the stage. When you shove someone it takes away their ability to land properly. There is an art to getting back off stage and into the crowd.

We still don't even have a proper video of "the shove", people are saying none of the released ones were the final blow.

Scorpyin, I'm with you on this one. As a band frontman myself, you have a job to do and that's perform. That's it. I'm not a security guard and I don't have time to be. Am I suppose to stop performing EVERY time a kid get through the frontline? Then I would be stopping fifty times a set. What's the point of performing in the first place if you can't perform a Complete song. It's an unwritten rule: You get on and get off quickly and safely. If your up their taking a coffee break, you get removed. Simple as that and most logically individuals know that also.

The kid was on stage 3 different times during the set. I would call that taking a coffee break and the dude got removed. Unfortunate what happened while being removed, but it all comes with the territory.

if all the people that were in the moshpit at that fatal moment (and that obviously did not try to catch him properly) together with the concert promoters and security would all show up and show they're all as guilty/unguilty as Randy, then maybe Randy has a chance of beating the system... there's no way a judge will imprison 30 people, because of some fatal accident. And there's also no way the parents will allow for something like that to happen aswell... unless the parents really hate everything that has to do with metal... Them Randy is screwed... might be time for Randy to do some background checks before leaving to CZ

It's a tragedy this kid died. And if Randy gets convicted, that's a tragedy as well since this was an unfortunate accident.

Manslaughter charges are so hit and miss simply off the whole notion of what manslaughter is.

You can argue day and night whether fans should get on stage or not. But the bottom line is if they do, then they're pretty much putting themselves at risk. Same as if you get into a pit or go crowd surfing. There's no guaranteed safety for any of those things. That's why many venues are so against it (at least here in the states).

I'm sure there's *some* video out there of the show. I'm not sure if the video of the guy getting pushed off the stage by security is the same kid or not. If it is, I'd say that was 95% security and 5% Randy.

I'm also sure if the prosecutor is continuing ahead with the charges he must have some sort of evidence or something that he feels lays the guilt squarely on Randy. I'm curious as to what it is (if anything).

I also have to say I think it's in pretty bad form for anyone to wish Randy jail/death/whatever just because you don't like the band.

The accident has nothing to do with Lamb of god or metal or whatever. Climbing on stage is way out of the purpose of why you go to a show. You are weak chicken shit that instead on brawling or fighting outside you are hiding behind some stupid fucking concert to show your what? Aggressiveness?? Gimme a break. You want to talk the very next day how you climb on LoG concert and jump off the stage and how does it make you a HERO..
The family of the dead fan SHOULD PAY for Randy's defence, and they are the FIRST to promote him as innocent...

Some people blamed the secutiry guy.. ITS NOT HIS FAULT EITHER.

I would throw him out of the stage as well if I was security guy or a band member I WOUDL FUCKING DO THE SAME
