TODD LA TORRE-Fronted Version Of QUEENSRŸCHE Begins Recording New Album - Dec. 3, 2012
The Todd La Torre-fronted version of QUEENSRŸCHE kicked off the recording sessions for its new album yesterday (Sunday, December 2) at London Bridge Studios in Seattle, Washington with producer James "Jimbo" Barton — the man who engineered and mixed the band's classic 1988 LP, "Operation: Mindcrime", and its 1990 follow-up, "Empire", and co-produced 1994's "Promised Land". La Torre — who is also a member of Florida melodic metallers CRIMSON GLORY — states, "Day one of recording the new QUEENSRŸCHE album went great! Great things on the horizon."

The new QUEENSRŸCHE CD is tentatively due in early 2013 via an as-yet-undetermined record label.

In a recent interview with Metal Assault, QUEENSRŸCHE drummer Scott Rockenfield stated about the band's renewed collaboration with Barton: "It's a great thing — we're really excited about it, he's really excited about it. We've wanted to work with him for a while, but for whatever reason, we just hadn't gone there yet. This is a great time for us to do that, though. We all discussed who we wanted to do the record with, and he was one of the first names that came up. It was easy for us to pick up the phone and call him. It was like our relationship picked up right where it left off, so it's gonna be a lot of fun. He's a very creative guy that did some great records with us in the past. I think that's one of the most important things when it comes to why we want to work with him."

Asked if fans will see a return to the progressive metal sound QUEENSRŸCHE had in the '80s, Scott said: "What we're trying to do, and what has been really interesting since Todd has jumped into the band, we're trying to revisit the old QUEENSRŸCHE catalog — stuff off of the EP and "The Warning". That's always been a part of what we are, so yeah, definitely! I think in my opinion, we're really revisiting that vibe of why that music was special back then for us. There will be a modern flair to it, though, just because we're in the modern age. The fun thing about Jimbo being a part of it is that he can help tie together the two sides. He does come from our past and some of the great records and some of the great sounds that we're known for, but he's also living in the modern age and doing some interesting things as well. I think it's going to be a really great QUEENSRŸCHE record. People are going to go, 'Wow, that's QUEENSRŸCHE! That sounds just like what we've known them to be, and what we would expect them to now be.' That's what I think peple will get out of it."

Regarding the songwriting process for the new QUEENSRŸCHE CD, Scott said: "One thing about this record, is that it's completely written and performed by us five in QUEENSRŸCHE, which for whatever it's worth, was not the case as of the last few records that we made. We're really excited. That was one of the things that we really needed to work on and change and that we weren't really happy with. The whole record is us doing our thing, and you're going to get the energy that comes out of that. It's been a lot of fun because we've been tossing some great ideas around. The results will be when it's finally done and you can listen to it, but we're really excited about it and I think everyone else is gonna have a good time once they hear it."

Um, this is Queensryche ...
I am not a fan ... of the band (or the drama)
However, even looking at this as a "news" story .... this is a story about Queensryche .....
The band who booted a guy, who is no longer in said band ......
... Stop covering your arse legally.
Whether the new singer is good or not ... democracy says ..
This is that band

Now THAT is what I'm talking about. Look at that band photo. Those are guys who are ready to kick some ass. Plus, the Overkill shirt Todd is wearing is a nice touch. Their new CD will be miles better than the shit that Tate is trying to sell, just on principle.

Hey Blabbermouth-- stop catering to that washed up narcissistic, delusional drunk Geoff Tate. This is Queensryche. Period. GT's "version" of the band is just a blatant attempt at a cash grab before he loses in court, or before the band throws money at him in a settlement so he'll STFU and go away before their album drops.

That shit gets old. If a band can continue, and people want to buy their stuff, it makes no difference who YOU think is the most important person in the band.

And ... the OverKill shirt IS cool. Now make a disc with Crimson Glory too.

None of that changes the following facts:

1. Tate attacked his bandmates and threatened them to the point where the band had to be kept away from Tate, with him flying separately and staying in a different hotel.

2. Tate tried to rip off his fellow QR members, including Chris DeGarmo, BTW, by trying to negotiate a backroom deal for a Mindcrime film without involving them at all. It was only when one of the people involved in the negotiations contacted Rockenfield that the rest of the band found out.

3. Tate's wife, who was managing QR at the time, was quite possibly skimming the books to pay for another band she was managing, who didn't have legal visas to work here in the States.

Those right there are three solid reasons to fire a guy and move on without him.

Tate is gone, and QR are all the better for it. They're playing with an intensity they haven't had in years.

Hey but wait a minute, I thought the other guys couldn't write without Tate? I thought all they could do was crank out a couple of riffs every few album cycles. Mish said we were never going hear any new music. Then when we got the teaser she said we'd never see an album. So now we see them cutting the album. So what will Mish say next? That they won't get a label? I can't wait to see that one disproven too.

Camp Tate must really be desperate now that photos of Queensryche in the studio are going to be emerging. The contrast between these guys working on new music and Tate's bald, vest-wearing, stumbling, slurring drunk ass will only become more obvious as time goes on. That's the only reason why anyone would go back and quote mine in order to try and make a point.

Yeah, everyone with functional hearing knows that DTC is a massive pile of shit. They also know that when Wilton publicly said it was a massive pile of shit, he was forced to backtrack. Maybe the others figured it was easier to try and sell that massive pile of shit than deal with Tate and his hissy fits behind the scenes.

LaTorre QR is the same as Hagar VH which by most peoples standards isn't a good thing. I am sure he will sound good on record though as they will almost certainly be using auto tune.

I doubt they'll auto-tune much of anything, if they use it at all. Unlike Tate and his wine-swilling ways, LaTorre actually takes care of his voice. That means he can hit notes that Tate couldn't get near without studio tricks.

Plus, we already know what Queensryche sound like live with LaTorre singing. The real test will come from this next album, but with Barton manning the boards, it will be good.

Version of Queensryche? There is only one Queensryche - they have scored large with a new singer. I mean, com'on - the old singer completely lost his vocal chops - it was time for a change.

He cannot hit the notes as you say. Everybody is listening with their dislike for GT rather than with there ears. He does OK on the lows but is really rough on the highs, especially when it goes from a low to a high. Not saying GT can sin like he could 15 years ago but he is still better than this guy. Not to mention LaTorres stage presence is pathetic. Give me Will Shaw over this guy any day. If you don't know who Will Shaw is. look him up on You Tube.

Well, I don't know anything about Will Shaw's history but been singing myself for years and do know a thing or two about it. Will has talent no doubt about it but he also lacks strength. He does wonderful clear high notes and possesses a flexible voice but not that much depth and emotion. It's also a whole different animal doing these things on tour subsequent nights. You'll have to build up some stamina first. I think Todd has that foundation to build his act on. He's quite confident too. That's a good sign. He knows what he's able to bring on the table.
He seems to be able to cope with different kind of stylistic approaches. And he has already stated several times that the most significant difference in his voice compared to Geoff's is his rougher edge. He can do some intense screeches and serious growls too if he wants to. And I don't mind that at all. It' not a sign of a bad singer if each and every note is not clean and clear(unless it's unintentional which I don't think is the case here). It's the 21st century we're living at. You can update the formula a bit if only they're able to maintain(reinvent) the soul of the band. Strong melodies, riffs and songs have to come first. But most certainly they could/should add more punch on their delivery.
The picture seems to provide some evidence on that. They look like they mean it for real this time.
By the way, Ellsworth and his company are one of the most underrated classic thrash bands ever. If the 'rÿche guys take only the vibe of OverKill's stubborn and crusty attitude with them to the studio they're on a good track.

Oh, I'd really love to see Geoff get his act together too. He needs to lay off the wine for a while or whatever it is and work out his physique and vocals too. Of course he can't go back in time but he can do a lot better than he's recently done. Maybe he could now stretch out musically wherever he wants to and deliver us something truly special. Don't have to be heavy or metal at all. If it's good it's good no matter the genre.

I will say it yet again. Geoff Tate's musical direction was suffocating this band, and it is apparent to everyone but Geoff and his little inner circle. If he is still such an important element to the band's ongoing success, then he should also be able to have a successful solo career. No one cares about his current writing, and yet he states that the other band members were not involved in the recent writing. It's clear that it was his recent influence ruining the band. It's clear that no one cares about his solo records or concerts.

The entity that is QR has moved forward with an amazing vocalist and is about to get back on track with a heavy new album that true fans have awaited for decades. I, for one, and once again excited as hell for this album, and have not felt this excited for a QR release since awaiting the release of Empire.
