MEGADETH's CHRIS BRODERICK Talks Technique, Upcoming Album - Dec. 2, 2012
Chris Parker of Boise Weekly recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH guitarist Chris Broderick. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On the high expectations surrounding his gig as MEGADETH's seventh lead guitarist:

Broderick: "I'd consider it high stress, not necessarily because of the actual workload but more because of the microscope you're under at this level. Everybody is video-recording you. Everybody has an expectation because of all the great guitarists that have been in MEGADETH in the past."

On his early guitar influences:

Broderick: "[When I got my first guitar], the first thing I did was spray it red and put black duct tape on it, because I wanted to be Eddie Van Halen. Then as soon as I heard Yngwie [Malmsteen], it was all over for me. Then I got into all the shredders like Jason Becker [who played with later MEGADETH guitarist Marty Friedman in CACOPHONY] and Paul Gilbert."

On how he and MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine have complementary styles:

Broderick: "Dave's always been self-taught and he always kind of gets what he wants out of his playing, but you can tell he fights for it all the way there. You can hear it in his playing and in the way he attacks the guitar. I came at it from a very different road, where I had a lot of different instructors and people showing me the path to get there. I've always been about trying to minimize effort to do what I'm trying to do — two different paths. I think it's so cool because [our styles] both translate into their own feel and their own kind of sound. When you put them together, they complement each other very well. He brings his own writing style into the mix, so when I look at that, I'm thinking, 'How do I write a counter melody or a counter harmony to that particular part?' It definitely makes it that much more interesting for me."

On how thrash metal has reached a new wave of fans in recent years:

Broderick: "It's cool to see it transcend so many generations. Knowing that it's been around since 1983, and it's got fans that are still with us from then, but also to see it resurge in the younger generation is really cool. It's awesome to see them appreciate thrash the way I do."

On MEGADETH's plans for the follow-up to 2011's "TH1RT3EN":

Broderick: "We're so busy right now. We're writing the new CD in our off time. And we're really not taking a lot of time off in the first place. We're just moving and grooving. We're demoing songs and starting to look at the direction we want it to go in."

but haven't dug what i heard of his playing from the last album.

it's fluid and he's obviously very talented but it seems almost too "easy" as in lacking some tension and aggression.

my $.02. i don't many don't agree but considering Megadeth's impressive early catalogue, i think i have a right to hold his solos up against the other players.

for technical soloists in thrash/speed metal i'll take Mr. LaRoque for 500, Alex.

Tommy T. Baron. perhaps the finest lead guitarist in thrash ever in my books. best combo of techy progressive playing with some great pentonic/classic metal lead playing.

I'll take Tommy T. Baron, too. Underrated guitarist and writer.

Coroner Uber Alles!

I think a good direction for the next album would be to promise everyone some really intense old school thrash and then release an entire album of bland boring generic mid-tempo rock.

Tommy Baron is fantastic. Don't get me started on him. As far as Chris goes, I think he is a technician of the highest order. He recreates the back catalog most efficiently. That's really it though, he doesn't bring anything new to the table. Chris Poland is clearly the best guitarist Megadeth ever had. Few players can come close to that guy. I like the way Chris B. breaks things down analytically. I have never been really schooled when it come to playing so its interesting to hear how someone this disciplined comunicates the mechanics of playing in Megadeth.

I think I'd have to agree with you about Poland being the best guitarist that Megadeth has had, there's way too many people who think that Marty is

I think Chris Broderick is by far the best guitar player Megadeth ever had. The guitar playing on Endgame is every bit as good as the playing on Rust in Peace.

When you look at the guys discipline in terms of how many hours a day he plays electric guitar, classical guitar, violin, and piano he is one of the over all better musicians in all of metal.

Chris B is an absolute monster. He is able to bring tremendous feeling into his work BECAUSE he has all the techniques down perfectly. He doesn't have to hack through the mechanics - he's learned them and is just brilliant, so he can compose and create with the very best of them. I don't get into the songs of much of MEGADETH's catalog since the early days, but I still listen to the last 2 cds just to hear Chris' solos, a real treat to the ears even if I think Dave's songwriting is mundane these days. In short, Chris is really the only reason I listen to newer Megadeth. Between Dave's insane political rants and his decayed songwriting, there isn't much else, truth to tell.
But the old stuff still rules. Those saying Poland and Friedmann were great are 100% right. But Chris deserves the title of greatness even if he came to a band that's at the end of its road.
