JASON BONHAM On Why LED ZEPPELIN Reunion Tour Never Materialized (Video) - Dec. 1, 2012
Jason Bonham stopped by the studio at 98.7 The Gater in West Palm Beach, Florida on Wednesday (November 28) to talk with Andy Preston about the new LED ZEPPELIN CD/DVD "Celebration Day", which is in stores now.

Jason talked in depth about the 2007 show at the O2 Arena, the "Celebration Day" project, and said he was honored and proud to be part of any official product being released under the LED ZEPPELIN banner. He also talked about the final rehearsal for the show which took place at Shepperton Studios.

Asked to elaborate about why a LED ZEPPELIN reunion tour never materialized after the O2 show, Jason said he and ZEPPELIN singer Robert Plant spoke very long and hard about it. It wasn't simply because Robert had other things going on. Jason shared a conversation that he and Robert had, and it turns out there were more personal reasons. He said Robert told him "[late LED ZEPPELIN drummer and Jason's father] John [Bonham] was the drummer in LED ZEPPELIN" and that he "struggles sometimes just thinking about trying to create some magic again when he's not there... He was a very, very dear friend of mine that I miss every day."

Watch the entire 14-minute interview below.

Obviously Plant is the one holding them back, but that's ok because obviously he misses John and doesn't feel comfortable with it. But if he's not singing I don't want them to do anything Zeppelin. If they want to use another name and go on out, that's different.

Look I am the biggest Zepp fan out there. And I am not trying to be an A**hole. But Robert stop blaming the fact that you dont want to do the reunion because of Bonzo. It's because you can't sing it anymore. No harm in admitting it. I am just saying what everyone else is thinking. Bonzo was THE DRUMMER for Zeppelin no doubt. But after 30 years. Come on Percy.

Masterofmetal65 speaks the truth. There are so many of my all-time favorite vocalists that have lost their voices over the years. To name a few: Plant, Hetfield, Geddy Lee, even Halford to some extent. Here are a couple that still sound great, or did sound great up to the end.... Dickinson, Dio.

I love how someone who is about to criticize tries to add weight by saying shit like "I'm their biggest fan, BUT..."

Right.

Really you're 100% right......Plant is just being diffficult. Shit, he plays Zep songs on his solo tours all the time. He did when him and Page did there thing in the 90's. So I find it very hard to believe it because of Bono not being there.

I really don't get what it is. None of these guys are expecting a world tour to every city. I think most expect a 40 to 50 dates around the globe over maybe a year or two. Nobody wanted extensive touring.

If there is a heaven, I guarantee that Bonzo is smiling down upon us seeing his son play w/ Zep. Try another one Plant.

If you think Plant can't sing anymore you obviously haven't heard Celebration Day...certain songs were tuned down but certain ones like Kashmir, For Your Life, and Misty Mountain Hop were not, and he sounded great on all of them, tuned down or not. Listen to Plant belt out Rock & Roll and his scream at the very end from the O2. He has other reasons as Jason mentioned, which is ok though, let Zep worry about it, they know what they are doing either way. Zeppelin are not your average band, they are head and shoulders above every one else, and they think things through a little more carefully.

plant may not have the same voice he used to, but i don't think he's using that as his reasoning and is sincere in the fact that he does not believe it should be a band without john. anyone that knows anything about robert knows that he's a pretty classy guy and isn't into pimping himself out unlike jimmy page.

The old excuse is no Bonham means no Zepp. Fine..

Why say other things to the press?
We're not as good anymore.
We have other projects to do.
We've already done our job as a band.
My voice can't hit those notes anymore.

Plant gives different excuses, since he's not sincere about any of them. No good.

Hey, Jason, just fucking leave the Led Zeppelin name alone, man. Your father is not here anymore, so please don't reform Led Zeppelin or try to spoil the legacy.

have earned the right to do whatever the fuck they want and still have the respect of their real fans. They never released bad product, everything from them is top notch, Page has made sure of that. The integrity of this band is still firmly in place and that is something that you cannot say for Black Sabbath, or Aerosmith, or Deep Purple, etc.

Sabbath and Purple are my two favourite bands. I enjoy everything by every lineup, pretty much, but RockShowTrader has a strong point regarding integrity, legacy, management and quality of output. Zeppelin and the Beatles are a rarity.

However, I doubt any Zep or Beatles members went broke. Sabbath and Purple members did, through bad management, bad deals, badly received records, bad marriages, bad habits etc etc. Also, In Through the Out Door wasn't great by Zep standards, and who knows how they'd have ended up if Bonham didn't die. If Plant solo and The Firm are anything to go by, I'd guess the shine was gonna come off regardless.

shpuld just stick with he doew not want to do it and risk the kegacy of the band story and stop using bonham's death as an excuse. you let his son do the O2 and he did a good enough job that the rest of the band and public wanted it to continue. you seem to be under the impression people care about that you are a folk singer now. newsflash Robert we don't! if it makes you happy then fine but just pick a story other than bonzo's death and stick with it. you will always be thought of as the singer for Led Zepellin no matter what you do so you should do it if not for yourselves then the fans who want it. your legacy is set no matter how it would turn out so just do it!

Enough with this already!

Is Plant's voice diminished compared to the '70s? Well, of course, but he can still sing VERY adequately for one show, as Celebration Day proved.

Now, could his voice survive an entire world tour? Highly doubtful...maybe it could, but doubtful.

But I honestly don't think that's the reason for not wanting to tour...I take him 100% at his word, and all you assholes who constantly rag on KISS and Aerosmith and Ozzy and Metallica for their various "sellouts" should be APPLAUDING Plant, but no...

Just proves that everyone comes here to bitch.

The last concert was 5 years ago, and we could already see signs telling us this would never work on a tour due to Plants voice. It sounds great, don`t get me wrong, but you could hear it didn`t sound like it used to, and at this age with a tour it wouldn`t hold. Page, Jones and Bonham Jr should put a band together, play Zeppelin all they want and make new music, but don`t call it Led Zeppelin. These guys are friends and they`ve made great music together, and I actually respect Plant for not "milking the cow". Hear me, Simmons?

Jason already is part of a great band, Black Country Communion. Since that band isnt Jo B 's primary concern, why cant Jimmy take over for Joe, Glenn just do vocals, and John take over bass. There you go, Mk2 BCC.....

They've been to the top of the mountain and have nothing to prove to anyone. So happy he let the legacy stand....besides, Jason has nothing on his father. More importantly, time waits for no one.
I saw the Zeppelin reunion three times: Page & Plant, and it was fantastic. It was also 15-17 years ago......

a reunion is unnecessary. It can only tarnish the legacy. Look at what the Stones are doing? In reality, it is quite sad. I pray the new Black Sabbath albumn is decent and not a disaster.

Let's try figuring you all out before expeculating about Plant. The true LZ will never play again, but I am mainly a Page fan and we can't even see him play now. Couldn't praise Bonham Jr. any more, who even has become one of my fav drummers, who wouldn't want him in their band!?

They could have toured as 21th Century LZ, just like The Doors, because unless you're one of the stupid fans, you can figure out JHB is no longer in the band. If anyone could have pulled out a true Farewell Tour is LZ, but then, stupid fans would be all over their playing and vocals, criticizing and analyzing their every move...as if, like the song, everything remains the same...

If there is one person in LZ that is not 100% on board, it simply should not be done. Robert is very happy and passionate doing what he has been doing, kudos to him for finding his own path. JPJ has been doing a lot of producing and even had come back into mainstream with Them Crooked Vultures. Jason Bonham has carved out a career in music and part of that involved working with LZ. John Bonham's legacy is in cement. Love Jimmy Page but Page's path in recent years in much less defined. I dig his upcoming project with the remastering, that's a good way to bring Bonzo's era stuff back in the forefront. Any further tweaking(new music/tour) at this point is a risk to fuck up the current status the guys have worked their whole lives to achieve, and they would be under an intense microscope. It's done, celebrate the thing if you are a fan.

I am honestly surprised they even did the Celebration Day thing, that was a bonus for Zepp fans and it went off well. Memories of Zeppelin are respectable and intact, and they will be delivering some unreleased material from back in the day soon. They were an epic band. Let it be.

People could blame Robert for the fact that Led Zeppelin hasn't done a full reunion, and they're right. But that's his choice. He's Robert-fucking-Plant, and without him, Led Zeppelin does not, and should not exist....as it should not exist without Page, or Jones, and from what it seems Robert feels, without Bonham either.

As much as someone like me who was born on the tail end of Zeppelin's run would love an opportunity to see them live, I'm kind of surprised there aren't more people commending Plant on his loyalty to Bonham and the original line up. Just let it be. If it's going to happen, it will happen when Robert, Jimmy, and John say it will happen simultaneously.

Plant gave up the ghost, which is respectable.

But he constantly misdirects on the reason why...he can't sing anything but whispery, leathery drones without cracking constantly.

This doth not a Led Zeppelin make.

All my respect to Robert's decision for not continuing on with the other guys as Zep. Any hardcore fan would agree that creating magic under the Zeppelin name requires all original four of them, and that was in the 70's. R.I.P. Bonzo.

It's not just that Bonzo was such an amazing drummer, but he was also one of Robert Plant's closest friends growing up. That kind of bond runs deep, and you're lucky to find that sort of thing once or twice in life. That, and as wonderful a job as Jason does on the new live album, you still feel and miss Bonzo's presence..

Zeppelin had a very distinct chemistry with the original four. I think they did the right thing winding things up with 'Celebration Day'.

It's wild to think that tomorrow it will be 32 years since Zeppelin officially announced their disbandment.

Every member of Led Zeppelin is irreplaceable: every one of them is crucial to the band's sound. It's just as well that they keep things as they are. Thanks for over forty years of genius music. Peace.
