KISS Frontman PAUL STANLEY Confirms That He Is Working On His Autobiography - Nov. 30, 2012
KISS frontman Paul Stanley has confirmed that he is planning to write an autobiography after having previously dismissed the idea as a "waste" of time.

During an appearance on this past Wednesday's (November 28) edition of the "Sixx Sense" radio show hosted by MÖTLEY CRÜE/SIXX: A.M. bassist Nikki Sixx, Stanley, 60, was asked if he has read some of the other rock and roll autobiographies out there and whether he has plans to write a book of his own.

"This will come back to haunt me, because, of course, mine is in the works," Stanley said (hear audio below).

"Autobiographies, for the most part, to me, are like writing a love letter to yourself," he continued. "I mean, George Orwell said that the autobiography is the most outrageous form of fiction. How objective can you be when you are writing about yourself.

"I've seen people around me write books and somehow they're always in the center of everything that happened, they were the one who made it happen. There's been a lot of those books that didn't really interest me much. I thought Duff's [McKagan] book was great. I think a book that just says, 'Gee, aren't I the greatest thing?' And 'I was smarter than everyone else.'…"

Asked how his book will be different from the other rock and roll autobiographies and whether his book will be "a history lesson in music," Stanley said, "Well, everybody will tell you the same thing: 'Well, my book is brutally honest.' It's a history lesson in music, but it's also a history lesson in somebody taking themselves and making themselves into something they weren't — taking a not-so-great deck of cards and winning at poker. So it's good. I think it's terrific. Especially, it's funny, at this point, with the three other guys from the original lineup having written books. It’s kind of like, 'OK, have you all said your piece? OK? Now let me tell you what happened.'"

In a 2007 interview with Australia's TheAge.com.au, Stanley stated about the prospect of writing an autobiography, "Show me anyone who writes about themselves and doesn't find themselves in the center of the universe? I have seen other people's autobiographies and I had some questions about those.

"Tooting my own horn is of no interest to me ... it takes you away from real life. It's a waste and I don't find a need to sing my own praises."

Original KISS drummer Peter Criss' memoir, "Makeup To Breakup: My Life In And Out Of Kiss", landed at position No. 7 on the New York Times "Hardcover Nonfiction" best-sellers list. The book arrived on October 23 via the Simon & Schuster imprint Scribner.

Former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley's book, "No Regrets: A Rock 'N' Roll Memoir", debuted on the New York Times "Hardcover Nonfiction" best sellers list at No. 10. The book, which was described as a look back at Ace's "life of sex, drugs, and rock and roll," arrived on November 1, 2011 via Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.

(Cliff notes version) I was born in New York, All through school I was picked on because of my effeminate ways. Joined a band and had sex with young roadie boys whilst concealing my preferences. Made it big and found two replacement boy toys to replace Ace and Peter to do anything they're commanded(because those two jerks liked girls). Oh yeah, I got married to a yucky girl too, so people will never think I'm gay.

I'm now rich and have no ethics about what I will put the KISS name on for profit.

The End.

I enjoy reading the books about the guys I listen to. Even if a few things are embellished,at least we had bonafide fuckin rockstars at some point in time. These schmucks today could get locked in a room with a hooker,an 8 ball and a magnum of Jack Daniels and they'd just sit there and fuckin cry about ther life instead of partying.

Interesting books are written by the guy who hung out with the subject/artist or by lesser known artists that don't give a shit what you think. Once in a while a well-known star like Keith Richards or Slash will have a good one too.

Some decent selections include:
-Henry Rollins "Get In The Van"
-"On The Road With The Ramones" (lots of good shit in there)
-Iggy Pop "I Need More"
-Juliana Hatfield "When I Grow Up"

Juliana is a great example since she's indie with a period of MTV hype/backing. She wrote her memoirs from the road like Rollins did. It gives a great picture of what it's really like when you have some success but still go through lots of shit personally and professionally.

well said, agree 100%. Keith's was good, he just related stories, was less predictable. Plus he's seen it all....Slash's had lots of good stories, the band was defintely not boring...I happened to read Dylan's chronicals, and it was real good, opinions, non chronilogical book, just random topics and stories about things, people he's come across. I'm not even much of a fan, but it was interesting....I like Anthony Kiedis' as well, good story. and they aren't a huge band of mine.

Others are just either predictable, or stupid. Some cashing in and giving up very little. Weilands was terrible. a cash in, blank page, tons of pics, little meat on the bone. Ace's, Ozzy's, sort of stupid ramblin's of guys that are burnt out. Not much talk about the actually music, just a few drug stories. it gets boring after a while. (and I like Ozzy & Ace, not putting them down).

I don't even know Rollin's music, but always like his take on subjects. he lives life....over all the rock bio is now becoming a generic thing rocker's must do. The stories are all simular.

I don't actually think he's gay, but he IS one of the most effeminate guys in rock'n'roll...kinda like Lyle, the effeminate heterosexual skit from SNL.

Shit, he makes Little Richard look like Lemmy Kilmister.

Why call your album same name as the awful Monster drink, now I hear why. Sure it has some catchy parts, but as a whole, no more than 3 songs caught my attention. Matter of fact, Gene would be un/happy to hear I didn't
copy a single song to my music library...because none are worth it. The late Eric Carr was best drummer they ever had, but Martin does rock as well. They need to bring Kulick back and take off the outfits again!

I must admit, it is getting tougher being a musician nowadays, specially in RnR, with almost every band putting out crappy music...except Rush & Led Zep! I admire rockers for life as Paul, but rather see them taking time making better music than writing lousier books...

with this post. I will merely say, as a fan from '74 ( when I was 13 ) I love the new disc. Sonic boom hasn't been listened to since I got it, but I have played the new one almost every day since I got it. Gene sounds and plays great. Paul sounds great. The production is great. Eric's playing is quite good, and aside from the "spaceman" song, Tommy is sounding less like he is copying ACE. Speaking for the music alone, I really like it.

hey spaceace69.
it's not ONLY about the music... that's the problem with liking this album. Yes, it's ok musically - so good songs. I also like the music on Psycho Circus, but now can't look at it without thinking of what Ace and Peter must have gone through. $immon$ and $tanley telling them they can't cut it, bringing in other musicians. Then coming across as they played on it for years. NOW - they continue with the f'ing characters of Ace and Peter. ENOUGH. Yes, if I had enough money I'm sure I could come up with a cool sounding album (and even some pez dispensers in my likeness), get some dudes to dress up like iconic rock musicians... DOESN'T MAKE IT RIGHT.

spent my day at work listening to Ace's solo stuff - only did listen to Anomoly once or twice orginally. Anomoly seems much more original & creative - compared to SB and Monster. Then I've dove into Frehley's Commet, Second Sighting, Trouble Walking... man - really good stuff. Not production or "hit" wise what Kiss was going... but great stuff. Ace is an original... think of how crappy it must feel for Thayer and Singer to dress up as someone they AREN'T everyday. With Gene and Paul bossing them around. wow

Bought Anomoly the day it came out , cd and vinyl , very good disc , still have it in my play rotation . And the Comet stuff is awesome ! Ace has proven he can do it on his own ...................AGAIN !

I still like SB and Monster , but I now wish they could be their own band and not ride the coat tails of the past ...... Or should I say , something I NEVER thought I would say , just a tribute band that has to put 2 really decent musicians in 2 legendary icons personas , is just trying to pull the wool over peoples eyes . It did mine for about 9 years !

Get Tommy and Eric their own characters or just let them be them ! Or just retire , I hate saying that , but it's the G.D. truth !

now he can contradict all that was negative in Ace And Peters books, place Gene and Himself at the center of ceremonies and re-write history with an "air-freshened" spin!....It'll be bullshit much like Slash's (shoulda called that one "Pre-emptive strike"-after all, it was ALL Axls fault!) where he'll paint himself as sum Ghandi-esque peacemaker amongst the "loons"....more self aggrandising bullshit from our favourite musical comedy act!...Fuck anything to do with kiss.

Well, I guess all respect is now lost if he goes back on his word and you also have to wonder why he's doing it... is it to set 'the record straight' after Ace and Peters book? Or is it just another cash grab seeing how the other autobiographies did so well on NYT's best seller list? I suspect a little of both but the cash allure proved to be the real catalyst.
This drama all began back when the original 4 were back together and the reverberations are being felt to this day. All this bad blood, all the recriminations and all for what? To try and legitimize this current lineup as the best lineup and the one that should've been. Bunch of baloney. You know what, Paul? For all of Eric Singers drumming skills, fuck him, I'd still take Peter Criss. For all of Tommy Thayers team player attitude, well fuck him too, Ace was WAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY more entertaining to watch and listen to. At least Ace was only influenced by Page and Townsend and all the rest, he didn't try to be them.

That's exactly why I said I wasn't going deep and talking about the new CD music only. Of course ACE is better than Tommy. Of course I would rather have both he and Peter on a kiss record. Of course I wish the retinas of my eyes never saw ACE and Peters makeup on anyone else's face. Of course I would also rather be 19 again and fuckin' the hell out of my first real love. I probably could have died happy back then, but missed much more that was to come. Sure, some of it was painful. Some downright awful. But I'm glad I rode it out. (had some help too, 'cause I certainly haven't made it easy on myself) but my point is I'm OK with the fact I can pick up a kiss CD in 2012 and still like it. And because Gene and Paul are still there, it still sounds like a kiss CD.

spaceace69.... do us all a favor and change your user name. you go on and on about how you realize ace is better, you'd rather see him and peter playing, you wish you'd never see their makeup on someone else. SO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT LOSER. like most of society today, you take what is given to you...without questioning the story behind it. scab Kiss is only about the money - and until losers like you stop spending money on it and defending it it will not only continue, but people wont' see what is wrong with it.
SO, DROP THE NAME - UNLESS YOU'RE PULLING A THAYER AND LIVING OFF OF ACE'S PAST SUCCESS. YOU COULD BE SPACEMAN69, THAYER69, KISSGUITARIST69. Put some thought into it, and not take the easy road.

Looking forward to this one. Paul Stanley is a ROCK GOD in every sense of the word. Without a shadow of a doubt, in his prime like David Lee Roth, as a frontman, he has very few equals. Great voice, great interaction in concert with fans and one of the very few of the music world that speaks like he has some sense. Never read Genes book (egotist), never read Ace's book (people who do a lot of drugs remember things very vaguely), and damn sure don't care about Peter( a little whiny bitch). Some the music auto's I've read have been Keith Richards(I didn't care for it at all, not enough juice), Neil Pearts (Good), Heart (sukcs, talks about how hard it was for them in the music industry since they were women. I don't give a fuck about that, I wanna know juice) and several more. I know Paul's will be well written and I'm looking forward to it.

It's funny, Paul says he's not into putting out a book for years, and the only months after Peter Criss releases a book that calls Paul "feminine" throughout, he suddenly says he's working on a book...
