OZZY On New SABBATH Album: 'I Hope People Who Have Waited All These Years Aren't Disappointed' - Nov. 28, 2012
Scott Kara of The New Zealand Herald recently conducted an interview with the legendary BLACK SABBATH singer Ozzy Osbourne. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

On how BLACK SABBATH came to be such a respected band:

Osbourne: "It's a really weird thing, because what we did, we just did. We didn't go, 'Oh, we're going to write this way, and we're going to record that way, and it's going to come out like this'. And 45 years up the road who would have thought it's still going to be current and people were going to look upon it as the foundations of heavy metal? I mean, you don't realise that sort of thing, you just do it."

On not being completely confortable with BLACK SABBATH being considered originators of the "heavy metal" genre:

Osbourne: "Not everything BLACK SABBATH did was about the devil, or about heavy metal because 'Changes' was a beautiful song. But all they ever remember is that I sing about the devil and 'Iron Man', you know."

On how the members of BLACK SABBATH — with the exception of drummer Bill Ward, who is sitting out the band's reunion due to a contractual dispute — are getting along nowadays:

Osbourne: "What's different now is that none of us get drunk or stoned or any of that stuff. We're all clean, and all in control of ourselves, we're not intimidated by each other, there are no arguments, and it's the way it should be. But when we were kids we had egos. When you're 21 and you get some success it takes a while to get your head around. You have an ego, you have the spoils of success, the cars, the houses, the money, the alcohol, the drugs, the groupies, and all the rest of it, and if you go through all of that and you are lucky enough to survive you get married, you get divorced, you get married again, and it's a journey. But we've done it all so what it boils down to now is the music - and that's what got us where we are in the first place. We have come through the other side, we're still able to work together, and that's where the enjoyment comes from. It's been a lot of fun making this record."

On the recording sessions for the new BLACK SABBATH album, which were interrupted by guitarist Tony Iommi's diagnosis with lymphona at the beginning of this year:

Osbourne: "[The treatment] has been a bit rough on him but he still manages to come up with those great riffs. It's been more than 30 years since I really seriously worked with the guys. We had a try a few years back but nothing came of it. But for some reason the timing is right and we've done about 15 songs. BLACK SABBATH is very unique in the respect that nothing is formulated. It's very unpredictable. I just hope the people who have waited all these years aren't disappointed."

Okay, so that's out of the way now. Don't worry Ozzy, nothing with Tony and Geezer could ever be disappointing. I'm sure your vocals will be cleaned up in the final version and Geezer's lyrics will be great, too.

"I Hope People Who Have Waited All These Years Aren't Disappointed"

Many people haven't waited that long and enjoyed Heaven & Hell's album very much thank you. The only reason it wasn't released under Black Sabbath is the legal fest that would have been set off by everyone knows who.

If he's questioning whether people will like it or not, that means it maybe isn't so good. Otherwise he'd be like 'The new material is really fucking good, and the fans are gonna love it'. Besides they got Tommy Doritos on the skins over the legendary Bill Ward. Joking, I'll still buy it since it's Sabbath after all and the first with Ozzy since you know when. Probably will be at least 3.5/5 if not better by my guess.

All kidding aside if it couldn't be Bill Ward they at least should have been Vinny Appice at least he has bit more of a history with Sabbat than Tommy Clueftos. That being said, I am sure the music/lyrics Geezer and Iommi write will be stellar bit Ozzys vocals have been weak for years.

And if no Ward = no Sabbath, then what about Mob Rules? Dehumanizer? Great albums. Get over it.

1. Bill Ward is not there therefore it isn't a true Sabbath album
2. Ozzy has trouble singing good these days, and his vocals will be all studio doctored up unlike the old days, sounding fake for a better word
3. The album will probably done on computers/pro tools, thereby making it sound like all the modern digital garbage. It ain't sabbath unless it is recorded on tape, with old style of miking amps etc.
4. The album will NOT be good front to back, as I don't see how those old dudes can make a full album of killer material, neither Tony, Geezer, or Ozzy have pulled that off in ages. Just listen to the Devil You Know by H and H...very average
5. 99 percent of reformed bands that are old men who try and capture what was great about them in their prime years usually fail as the magic and hunger is gone. Rich, fat, and happy does not equal great heavy metal.

1. Not true. They made albums without him before, they can do it again. You're just being reactionary and not thinking.
2. You have trouble talking good. What you meant was "Ozzy has trouble singing WELL".
3. You are not in Sabbath and therefore excluded from making judgements on how they should record.
4. You don't know that. Once again, you're being reactionary. Grow up and think.
5. Then don't pay attention if all you're gonna do is bitch like a teenage girl.

To everyone questioning why Ozzy is saying he hopes people aren't disappointed.

Usually bands talk about how its the best they've ever done, it sounds exactly like their old stuff, blah blah blah, then it sucks.

It's nice not to hear that propaganda for once.

1. by True I meant the original lineup, or at minimum Vinnie Appice on drums...someone with some history with the band and not a hired gun
2. You admit ozzy has trouble singing...you can't deny that
3. As a paying fan who may buy the record, I do have hope that they record in the vintage way..the true awesome sabbath sound came from vintage gear and vintage recording techniques....aka the sabbath crunch
4. No I don't know that but I am making an educated guess based on their recent histories
5. I am not bitching. I am stating a fact. I am a true metal fan with thousands of albums and shows under my belt. In my opinion this almost never happens. Name 3 bands that reformed in their retiree years who recaptured their youth and wrote a full album that blew most fans out of the water?

Three Facts:

Bill Ward is not in good enough physical shape for the gig but no one can just come out and say it.

I wish he were because he's sorely missed.

This is quite likely going to be Tony Iommi's last work. For that alone I hope the project is good and succeeds.

"Name 3 bands that reformed in their retiree years who recaptured their youth and wrote a full album that blew most fans out of the water? "

good question! the only one I can think of was Deep Purple back in 1984-85. very good album, great tour. ELP had a good one, but without Carl Palmer. Yes had 90125 back in 1984, but they weren't retirement age yet.

and ultimately they went back to what they'd done 100 times before, because the fans wanted what they remembered.

the problem is, if an old band came back and wrote great new material, you'd never hear it....none of the NEW songs would be on the radio. Fans of classic rock radio want to hear the old songs, and new music stations don't play NEW music by OLD bands.

whole problem with this was they had a press conference with all of them together to announce the reunion then someone(sharon) fucjed it all up. it is ashame bill won't be with them but as long as Tony is playing it will be a sabbath record. and complain all you want but the records he put out under the sabbath name all sounded like sabbath because of his signiture sound. the min. you hear his riffs you know it is a sabbath record no matter who sings on it. personally I prefer the non ozzy stuff and ozzy solo to ozzy led sabbath, and yes I am old enough to remember play my brother's records when he was not around. good stuff to be sure but I just like the sound of later sabbath and solo ozzy especially the randy rhodes ozzy but he never really put out a bad one.

And whoever else he is playing with under that name. Every possible Sabbath lineup, and there were many, made some great music. Some tunes every bit as good as anything on the original eight albums.

I can't get too worked up over Bill Ward not being there. It'd be much worse if Geezer wasn't there. New Sabbath is always something to look forward to. This might be it, so I'm going to make the best of it.

It's not his fault Bill Ward has heart trouble and is almost 70 years old.

There's no way a Sabbath tour could get insurance with an old out of shape drummer. What if Bill hasa heart attack during the first show ?

They probably wanted him to sign a waiver allowing them to continue or something like that. Still, they probably even offered to let Bill play an extended encore (3 songs) after Tommy plays the main set.

I don't understand the venom directed at Tommy Clueftos , the guy is Ozzy's drummer , he's not the guy from Coldplay and he's not Phil Collins

The guy rocks, he's obviously good enough for Tony and Geezer , he has the look (thank God he's not a fat bald guy) , WTF is up with all the personal comments about this guy ?

He's a drummer who scored a good gig and I hope he gets paid a big check. He's obviously a Metalhead for life and a lifelong Sabbath fan

So WTF ?

If Bill Ward wanted to be there, he would be there. Hasn't Bill Ward always been a royal pain in the ass anyway ?

(Love ya Bill ! Wish you were part of this but you amde the call)

I think the majority of us waiting for this album were already disappointed when they announced that Bill Ward wouldn't be participating in the reunion.

Black Sabbath is without a doubt one of the greatest bands of all time, but I have my doubts about this album. The vibe just won't be the same. For starters, one of the things that makes listening to the old Sabbath so awesome, is the late 60s early 70s vibe of the production of the music itself. It just totally adds to the eerie and dark vibe of the music. This new album is going to be recorded all digital and shit and be totally overproduced....totally not the same. Not by a long shot. Also...when they recorded their early stuff, they were four young, angry, poor guys, who were pissed off about seeing shit like the Vietnam war on TV everyday. Now they are just a bunch of apathetic, old, wealthy guys. The other major issue is Sharon. She will probably have an overwhelming amount of influence on the recording process and what songs actually make it to the album. I am also sure that she will make sure that it has some commercial accessibility to it. I often wonder about Tony and Geezer. My guess is that Sharon really made them jump through hoops and sell their souls in order to have Ozzy back in the mix again. The whole thing just seems like it's going to be really contrived.

I highly doubt Sharon is even close to as involved as you think she is.

Unreal how delusional people are here. For some odd reason I can't reply to any particular comment on this site and haven't been able to in awhile but a few things need addressed. First, to the idiot who said Ozzy's a terrible frontman...how many frontmen from legendary classic rock bands go on to have vastly successful solo careers 30 years strong? Distinct voice, entertaining show, incredible knack of finding talent, always energetic no matter how fucked up he was. Don't kid yourself.

Secondly, it's absolutely fanboy at its finest amazing how when Dio, Geezer, and Tony were together everyone begrudged the fact that it wasn't labeled as Sabbath and it was supposedly as good a form of Sabbath as any. That was TWO of the godfathers of metal in the band. Now we have 3 of the 4 back...one's missing, the poor health stricken (yet totally incredible in his own right) drummer and everyone's coming out of the woodwork, more than likely the same Dio fanboys who will shit on anything Ozzy-related, saying this isn't Black Sabbath. I, along with many others, see through your bullshit.

Third, to anyone bitching about Ozzy's voice...he's 60 years and 40+ years of those included some form of substance abuse or another (Phil Anselmo anyone?) No shit it's not the same anymore. The best part of it all is that if you actually pay attention to what Ozzy's done as a solo artist these last 6-7 years...you'd find his last tour he's sounded a hell of a lot better than he did 10 years ago. It's not even close because he cleaned himself up. Shit, he barely uses the monitor he was so chastised for over the years anymore b/c he actually has his memory back now that he's not doped on one pill or another.

It was decided that after Sabbath got into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, that the only lineup to use the name Black Sabbath was the original one, with ALL FOUR MEMBERS. That's why Heaven And Hell used that name. No Bill Ward=No Black Sabbath.

No it wasn't, where did you hear that ? Tony didn't wanna use the name because he didn't wanna confuse people and have them thinking Ozzy was in the band.

It would have been a dream come true with ALL FOUR original members and they absolutely fucked me out of that. So they won't get a fucking penny out of me ever again. I hope everyone that honestly believes in the original band will do that same and I hope that's not a disappointment to them. Fucking bastards!

It's not a Black Sabbath reunion, it's only 3 members of Black Sabbath like "Heaven and Hell" and "Born Again".
Without Ward is not Sabbath, without Iommi is not Sabbath, without Butler is not Sabbath, without Osbourne is not Sabbath.

I like that a metal god who hasn't recorded with the band that made him famous in over 30 years feels a bit nervous about putting out new material with them. It makes Ozzy seem a lot more human and a lot less reality TV star.

Can't see anything new with the Ozzy stiff surpassing anything Tony has done in the past 30 years...he's worked with some of the greatest vocalists in rock, and now Geezer's probably gotta be writing lyrics again (which he doesn't enjoy doing) and maybe the "American Idol" faithful will buy into it, but personally, I'll be holding my nose saying "PHHHHEWWWWWW"
