CANNIBAL CORPSE Frontman Explains ''Gigantic Neck' - Nov. 28, 2012
In the October 2012 issue of U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine, vocalist George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher (pictured below) of Florida death metallers CANNIBAL CORPSE was asked to explain his "gigantic neck." "Well, it's just from headbanging and lifting weights when I was younger," he said. "My dad had a business where he did painting, roofing and everything, so I'd work with him all day long. After that, we'd go to fishing spots to catch and eat all these fish. Then I'd jog over to my friend's house, who lived about a mile away, and we'd lift weights. If you compare old pictures from when I was in VILE to now, it's obviously grown and the only thing I've really done since is headbanging, which must be fairly similar to weightlifting."

Asked if he has ever had his neck measured, like if he had to get a tuxedo to go to a wedding or something, Fisher said, "Maybe when I got married in '98, but I don't remember and it's bigger now. If you really look at it, it's bigger than the base of my head or where my ears are. A friend of mine once said, 'You don't have a head, you're a neck with lips.' A lot of security guys will come up to me and complain about working out, but having skinny necks, and ask how I do it. I tell them to listen to [SLAYER's] 'Reign In Blood' and headbang the whole way through after working out."

This guy's got it good: he doesn't write lyrics or music, plays video games all day and gets paid to travel the world and have fun on stage. Lucky bastard!!

He's lucky he hasn't destroyed his neck and back the way Araya, Mustaine and Newsted did.

I guess it's just down to physical build and genetics. Some guys can headbang into their 40s and 50s, and some can't.

Angus Young and Kerry King are the same way...they still throw down and headbang onstage pretty hard, but don't have any physical issues.

Being short definitely helps, which both Angus and Kerry are...lower center of gravity, less stress on the spine.

Having a huge neck is also associated with heart problems. I wouldn't be surprised if he drops dead any day now. Poor bastard.

Tell me that when you turn 60 and can't move your head around. headbanging is terrible for you head, brain and neck. You shoulders also suffers from it. With perspective, what the hell does it serves anyway? It's like if I decided to consistently hit my chest following the beat of the music. People would tell me I am nuts; Well, headbaning is similar. It serves no purposes, hurts yourself and in the end you wonder why you did it anyway. Trust me, I had my share of it and NEVER again shall I windmill my head around like a lunatic.

Go ask the Arayas, Mustaines and Newsted of this world. They might have good testimonies to share.

I can't do the windmill anymore either. But telling metalheads that headbanging is a bad thing is like telling a monk to stop praying.

Firstly, my old man says that everything you do as a young man comes back to haunt you when you get old. That's physical shit mind you. Murdering someone might be easy to get over, but everyone's seen what George does live - if he lives long enough, his neck and shoulders will eventually be completely fucked.

Secondly, as mentioned above, while having a neck like that may be considered a super power, all super heroes have their weaknesses. In George's case, that would make his arch-nemesis Leonard Nimoy, who could Vulcan death grip the shit out of that trunk no fucking problem.

Maybe his neck is swollen from all the death metal screams and vocals. I'm sure I read somewhere that he said at first that doing death metal vocals hurt, but eventually it just didn't. Perhaps when he dies he can donate his neck to science and they can dissect it and publish their findings in New Scientist magazine. Or Metal Hammer magazine.

Human beings haven't used their voices like that consistently through the ages, so it's safe to say that George is at the cutting edge of human evolution. But then I guess Benton and Barnes don't have fat necks. Whatever.

I recommend you stay away from Nimoy though George. Especially if he is in one of his pinchy moods.

And stay golden.

Corpsegrinder sets the bar so high it is impossible to match in terms of headbanging. This guy is forty-something and doesn't give one fuck to put every single person at a corpse show in their spot if you try to keep up. Ha ha. To me, that translates into a badass show...every time I see them they are giving 100%. Not once have they been off their game.

On a side note, Alex Webster has got to be the coolest guy in heavy metal. I have met him several times and he is always talking with fans after the show. Always happy to sign stuff or get a picture with you. Sadly, I can't say that about too many other bands. Props Alex.
