TATE Is 'Puzzled' By 'Misconception' That He Doesn't Enjoy Singing Early QUEENSRŸCHE Classics - Nov. 25, 2012
David Boyle of Target Audience Magazine recently conducted an interview with QUEENSRŸCHE singer Geoff Tate. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Target Audience Magazine: Over the years, you've repeatedly said that you no longer feel inspired to sing selections from the earliest QUEENSRŸCHE albums, especially the most obscure tracks which have not been played on recent tours. Even if you had the inspiration to sing such QUEENSRŸCHE classics now — "Deliverance", "Child Of Fire", "Blinded" and "Roads To Madness", to cite some examples — would you be able to sing them up to the level you once did, or would those notes and style of singing put too much strain on your voice?

Tate: Wow! This misconception is puzzling to me. If one starts at the beginning, my life and my interests can be traced through my music. I do admit, some of those early songs from the EP and the "Warning" album hold different meaning for me now, much like the "dungeons and dragons" of early adolescence now hold a different meaning for most adults. There are several gems on those early records that I still feel strongly about and, as most people who have attended a QUEENSRŸCHE show lately, we as a band picked every song on the set list to reflect our individual favorites and our audience's favorites. In fact, over the years, we have conducted polls of our fans to get an accurate idea of what people wanted to hear live. I have very fond memories of playing "Rage For Order" in its entirety last year and also "Operation: Mindcrime" in its entirety at the end of our thirty-year-anniversary tour in December of 2011. In fact, the entire anniversary tour setlist was comprised of songs from all our albums.

Target Audience Magazine: You have sung the national anthem on many occasions. That's a tough song to perform live, even for a seasoned professional who's confident and comfortable in his abilities. Does that gig come with extreme pressure? Have you ever been nervous about singing the anthem, knowing the public has very high expectations?

Tate: I love singing the national anthem. It's a very inspiring lyric and the melody is engrained in our collective conscious. It always gives me goose bumps when I perform it. It's really not that difficult to sing. What is difficult is the environment in which one is performing. It's typically not set up properly for the singer. In the past, the equipment was antiquated and underpowered. Now many stadiums have in-ear monitoring set up so the singer doesn't have to suffer with a 2-to-4-second delay bouncing back at you and throwing you off.

Target Audience Magazine: How do the themes on your new/solo release differ from your work with QUEENSRŸCHE? How does the process feel for you as a songwriter?

Tate: How the themes differ is a judgment call and best left for the audience to decide for themselves. I believe people experience art in their own way and I would never presume that my, or anyone's, opinion mattered regarding differences. Making "Kings & Thieves" was one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had working on a record. I really was able for the first time in years to work at my own pace, which shows how quickly the album came together and is now ready to be released in just over one year after the last QUEENSRŸCHE album. It was also invigorating to work with positive, happy people who were enthusiastic about creating music.

Wasn't it just like a week ago when he said, in an interview, that he didn't like singing "Queen of the Reich" and other old songs anymore because he 'didn't connect with those old lyrics anymore', or some shit like that? What a dumb motherfucker.

Tate certainly feels like it's a very positive thing to have this huge amount of interviews lately. Probably he's thinking any publicity is good publicity. Funny thing is, with each one of them, he's losing more credibility than ever.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tate's interviews were a factor in Glen Dover's decision to withdraw from Tate's band. His opinions are all over the place, and he seems to contradict himself. Agreed, his credibility is in the shitter. In November alone, Tate has had 17 "news" posts in 25 days on BM.

Actually, the more interviews he does the more the haters will try to spin things to make it seem like he's losing credibility. To be honest he's been pretty consistant in al of the articles and interviews that Ive seen posted here.

Hmm...well, he stated, not vaguely, but very earnestly, that he could no longer relate to those songs, and wanted to sing songs he could do so with conviction, such as those extolling the virtues of women riding him like an exercise machine, which are infinitely more mature and meaningful.

I was really disapointed and was angry by all this thing and I was willing to say my opinion (and I did it)...but now I suddenly realize that he is a poor man...you know I just want this to end, I hope he can find peace, because he is Geoff Tate, he was singer of Queensryche, and in the early albums he did a hell of a job wich I'll love forever. I will support the real band with the new singer but now I'm really starting to feel sorry for Tate and his actions (spiting and fighting his bandmates)

He just finished saying that he doesn't want to sing songs like Queen of the Reich because he doesn't relate to them and considers them juvenile, and now he's surprised that people think he doesn't like singing the older songs?

All that shitty wine of his he keeps drinking is killing his brain cells.

Haha, I was just about say that!

Mike Portnoy has nothing on Geoff Tate, it has to be said. Sure, MP could have handled the situation with DT a lot better than he did, but I think in his case, it was purely a naivity and a real sadness over what happened with DT that prompted some of his sillier statements regarding that. With him, I think he knows he should have handled that better, and he also knows that had he done so, he would still be in the band, which is where I think he really wants to be.

Geoff is on a whole different scale as far as immaturity, ego, and apparent mental instability goes. Mike Portnoy probably reads all this and is so relieved that Geoff's antics completely dwarfs his own in comparison! lol

he actually realises he's contradicting himself or not. lol :\ He keeps trying to shatter "the myth" that he doesn't enjoy singing the older material anymore, only to then say things that clearly indicate that he doesn't like singing the old songs anymore. I wonder what Ronnie James Dio (who ironically guested on Operation Mindcrime: 2!) would make of Geoff's mocking of "dungeons & dragons" type lyrics?

I also find it highly ironic that he criticses those lyrics for being "adolescent", when he come up with ludicrous, immature song titles like "Wot We Do", and singing juvenile lyrics about women and sex that sound as if they were written by a pubescent 14 year old boy. Yep, they sure are shining examples of mature, intelligent songwriting! I'm wondering if Geoff is seriously deluded, or he simply can't sing those older songs properly anymore, and is coming up with other excuses for not wanting to perform them? Hey, it's probably both!

The funny thing is, the more Geoff talks (even taking the spitting and the other despicable behaviour towards his former bandmates out of the equation), the more apparent it is that he is not even on the same planet as his former bandmates from a musical standpoint, let alone the same page! It's crystal clear that Geoff was the driving force behind Queensryche abadoning their metal/hard rock roots, and that it would have been impossible for the band to go back to those musical roots with Geoff still in the band. The spitting and stuff was probably just the band giving him just enough rope to hang himself with, though secretly, they have probably been wanting Geoff out of the band for years. And I can't say I blame them.

As someone who was once a huge fan of Geoff Tate, I have to say it's very hard to see him degenerate so much in my estimation, but that he has done. I will always love his vocals on those early classic Queensryche albums, but as a person, I have lost any respect I had for him. Very sad.

Geoff Tate May 4 2012: "We played the 'Rage For Order' album [as a one-off] in New York [last year], and that was really, really… How should I put it? It wasn't very satisfying. I'll put it that way. It's not an album that has songs on it that resonate with me anymore as a person." http://www.blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=173546

So Geoff, you might see where we get the idea you don't like singing those songs. Which is fine, really. I'd rather you did your own thing that you totally believe in. Me, I find RFO to be one of the best albums of all time, and cold and clinical as it is, it has its own strange passion.

Maybe, just as there are currently two Queensryche's, there are currently two Geoff Tates!

One who spits on his bandmates, turns his back on his fans, won't sing the early tracks and blitzes the internet with interviews, while the other one blitzes the interrnet with interviews, won't sing the early tracks, turns his back on his fans and spits on his bandmates..!

Stranger things have happened.

I've actually been listening to the earlier Queensryche albums a lot lately due to all of this. Didn't see that coming.

as many posters above have pointed out, tate has made it clear through the years that he isn't into the early queensryche material anymore. fair enough, but he should at least stop trying to backtrack and pretend he never said any of that stuff. empire & promised land have some great songs, but the best queensryche albums are the first four. everything since promised land has been watered-down crap. at least the other guys seem to acknowledge this, and are trying to rectify things with the queensryche fanbase by finally putting out a metal album. i've seen queensryche live 5x through the years - they were always killer in concert, but every release they've put out since '94 has completely sucked and i didn't buy any of them. tate needs to just stick to being a solo act & let queensryche go back to the sound that got them a fanbase to begin with.

I'm equally puzzled by the fact that Queensyche seems to have gone into obscurity so quickly after they kicked Tate out. Anyone could see that no one in the industry wanted the band to continue without Tate but it's still amazing how Tate walks all over them with a new album and one of the tightest touring band at the moment. Queensryche must get their act together and come up with a new and really good album as soon as possible unless the band wants to make a total ass of itself.

What's Tate doing these days aside from calling people pussies for leaving his shows and drinking himself blind on stage every night?

Every comment that comes out of this guys mouth is a lie.
There is no misconception!

He's repeatedly made comments of not wanting to sing a lot of the early Queensryche songs because they sound cheesy and very dated for the 80's. he's also made many comments about not liking heavy metal and he doesn't like performing metal songs.

It's funny how he now says "I have fond memories of playing Rage For Order in its entirety."

Really??

Well, we all have memories of Geoff Tate slamming the fact they played Rage For Order in its entirety.

You could find the old stories on Blabbermouth where Geoff says "it didn't go well" and "It was something the fans wanted us to do but I didn't enjoy it" and "The songs on Rage For Order are very dated for the time period it was released and those songs have no intensity and don't hold up well today."

So let's see: he's admitted to assaulting his former band-mates, we've seen video of him spitting at them, we've seen video of of him rambling on drunk while his solo band completely butchers QR songs, he's comes across like a douche in most -if not all- interviews, and he contradicts himself left and right.

It must be hard to be a vocal Tate supporter and not feel like a fool.

Funny thing is that there are TWO Tates. People have hinted at alien abduction and a replicant being thrown back on earth.

The first Geoff Tate: one of the best singers in the world, full of life and passion, very introspective and intelligent in interviews, not into self promotion in the media, a true band leader, a visionary, a perfectionist in live performances (just watch the clip for "i will remember" from the unplugged gig...10/10 jawdropping)

The Geoff Tate from the Susan era: one of the most hit and miss singers who was once legendary, a blown voice from years of drinking, smoking, and not giving a shit, arrogant, dictator, pathological liar, media whore, greedy, disrespectful, manipulator, midlife crisis behavior, backstabbing, and the opposite of a musical perfectionist....a sloppy mess with a sloppy band.

It has to be an alien abduction and replacement!!

There's no damage control because Camp Tate are delusional and actually believe the things that Geoff is saying in these interviews.

Never mind the fact that finding proof of his contradictions and lies is as easy as doing a Google search. Tate lives in his own little world. He clearly doesn't understand that media is instant and the internet is forever, so proving that someone is full of shit is easy.

Look at the videos from the House of Blues gig. The real Queensryche are clearly having more fun on stage than they've had in the last decade and are sounding better than they have in ages. That's what happens when you have a real singer again and don't have to play your songs in the wrong key anymore. The real QR have Jim Barton producing for them again, and have had Pamela Moore on stage, and they have real management again with Live Nation instead of Susan Tate ripping them off.

It's obvious where the momentum is and it's not with Camp Tate.

Sorry but if you're fixated on a cockrock viking metal song like "Queen of the Ryche", you're probbbbbably still a virgin.

Just saying. That song is fucking (unintentional) comedy.

It's not a matter of being fixated on one particular song. It's the fact that Tate can't sing anymore but he keeps trying to bullshit everyone that he's the same singer he was 20 years ago.

He's not. He lies and contradicts himself all the time in interviews. He does shows drunk and drinks on stage, showing no real effort for the crowd. He insults the audience and calls them names during the show. His voice is clearly shot and he can't sing his old songs in their proper key anymore. His band is an embarrassing group of broken-fingered hacks who can't play. He's clearly delusional and has surrounded himself with nut-swinging fans and hangers on who tell him how great he is.

What's unintentional comedy is anyone in the Tate camp trying to portray him as being the one with the momentum.

exactly Dharma,

And you know it hasn't even been 20 years since he was good. I saw them on the Operation Mindcrime warmup tour with pamela moore in 2005 and it was stunning. He commanded the stage and sang excellent. I think that was the last tour he sounded good on from the clips I've seen. So only 7 years ago he still was a great singer. I am critical as hell, and I still stand by that show I saw in 05.

Every anti-Tate comment has four thumbs down. Geoff, Susan, Miranda and Kelly Gray?

Unlike many, I'm not a rabid Tate-hater - I respect his contributions on the first few albums, even if the musicians get the credit for the great music on those albums, Tate could pen some cool words. Sort of like Ozzy - I respect the Oz for his vocal work with Sabbath and the first 2 Ozzy albums, but he quickly went downhill after that, and today can barely "sing". Tate didn't lose his voice as quickly as the Oz-man, but the QR albums became so bad after Empire, it didn't matter how great he sang, the songs were awful. Maybe that's Tate's fault for changing the band's direction, or maybe it's the musician's fault for writing such terrible music, but as a fan, all I care about is that Queensryche are re-energized with a fantastic new vocalist and the musicians are evidently writing strong music for the first time since the original O:M. Of course we'll have to wait for the new album, but this is the first time I've been excited about QR in forever. As for Tate and his band of hacks (Blotzer? Gray?) - well, they can put out their own album, lots of luck there ...

I'd say after Promised Land which I thought was brilliant... Here In The Now Frontier wasn't a great record at all, just hit and miss here and there.

I'm a huge ryche fan and have been for a long time, I have seen very small shows with Geoff and think his vocals are awesome, I have to say that the later years of ryche have been a huge departure from what this band brought to the table and what most of us fans grew up with! I've seen the shows were they mixed all of it up and made it great! From hear in the now shit tear on its been bad, a few songs here and there that really kicked ass! But a few! Not the queensryche I listen too. I wish Geoff all the best, but and if he can put out a solid Geoff Tate scab ryche album count me in! But until he quits writing jazz records ill move on! Thanks for the great ones....

I'm not a Tate hater per se, but I have to admit that he looks like Howie Mandell in the picture. My friends and I dog on each other pretty hard so I'd say this to Geoff's face if we were friends. Just to show that I dish out AND take, my friends call me Meatloaf...........
