MORBID ANGEL Frontman Says 'Insanus' Album Is 'Still Growing' On People - Nov. 25, 2012
Mark Kadzielawa of 69 Faces Of Rock recently conducted an interview with vocalist/bassist David Vincent of Florida death metal veterans MORBID ANGEL. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

69 Faces Of Rock: So, you certainly had a lot of time to reflect on your life, and probably on what you've achieved with the band during your stay. When you look back, what do you think of?

Vincent: I'm actually very proud of all the accomplishments. The whole band is still together, and we've done a lot. And I'm proud of all that. There was a lot of hard work. It's really forging a path, through the forest, where there was really no path. We made a path. And to that end, I think it's a really positive thing. I feel fortunate that I've had the opportunity to do some of the things. Not everybody has the chance to these things. We had a very good team, you know, talented musicians, very good management, some good record companies/business relations. And that's what it takes. It takes all of these things. We were able to make some great videos. Anything that has to do with the idea of expression, and I know, people would love to do these things. But, it costs lots and lots of money, and when you have partners that are able to open doors for you, and allow you these avenues for creativity, that's a wonderful thing.

69 Faces Of Rock: Was there a specific event that made you want to return to MORBID ANGEL?

Vincent: You know, it was interesting. We were just gonna do a few shows. There was no plan for anything beyond that, and things just clicked. It went over really well, and I was a little floored by the response. I've been away from the band for a while, and it was humbling. It was a humbling experience.

69 Faces Of Rock: What approach did you take with the last record ["Illud Divinium Insanus"?

Vincent: I don't know if it's really approach. I mean, there's a lot of creativity in this outfit. Trey [Azagthoth, guitar] had some really interesting new ideas, and I was like, "This feels really different and really fresh." So, I wanted to do it, I was very much into what he was writing.

69 Faces Of Rock: The new album takes a very bold approach, but then again MORBID ANGEL is known for taking such left turns.

Vincent: I believe this! This is my belief too. Not everyone agrees, and they would probably like something that would sound like a greatest-hits record, but we have those already. That's not any new ground.

69 Faces Of Rock: What new influences came into play this time around?

Vincent: I would say for myself, I really turned inward. For my contributions to the record, I blocked out everything, and I sort of went secluded. I would write one day, and go and do it the next. If I found myself, sort of stumbling, or if it wasn't flowing, I'd move to something else. I would not even want to think about it, I just wanted to feel it. And, I think Trey pretty much did the same thing. He spent a lot of time just working and creating the weird things. It came out different, not all together different. We've always had differences in our albums, but there is just more of it on this record. We started with, as opposed to hiding it in the last couple tracks, or little interludes.

69 Faces Of Rock: Do you think the public has yet caught up to what this album is all about?

Vincent: I think it's still growing, and people tell me this every night. Listen, there were a lot of people who, when we put out "Blessed Are The Sick" after "Altars Of Madness", and the first song "Fall From Grace" starts with a slow riff, and immediately, everyone said, "Oh, they slowed down." And I'm like, "The fast stuff on that album is the fastest than anything we've done since." But people, they hear one moment of something, and they make up their minds based on that alone. Now the album is considered a classic. And the same thing happened when we did "Covenant" came out, and "God Of Emptiness" came out, and people were very divided about that. Again, it's something that we can't get away not playing; we have to play that song.

69 Faces Of Rock: Looks like everyone has their favorites, right?

Vincent: Yeah, some people tend to gravitate towards one record, and not the other. We're just creative people. We put stuff out there, and things come and go. And it's up to the people to decide what they think about it. At that point, my job is finished.

Awful, awful album. It's not a case of being narrow minded to other genres, no matter what way you look at it, it just doesn't work.

Insanus is by faar the BIGGEST dissapointment this year! All I keep thinking about when I have tried to listen to the album, is: bring back Steve Tucker and Sandoval! There is no doubt in my mind that Trey let Dave take whey to much control over the album. Trey has to get rid og Dave and get Morbid Angel back om track, where they belong.

I never want to hear that shitty album ever again Dave. Sorry, but youre deluded if you think fans are going to warm to that album.

Been a fan ever since day 1 and I listened to Alters and Blessed the other day, but now listening to what they have now become is heartbreaking.

Seriously, musically speaking there are some interesting ideas. Lyrically it is not what I expect from these guys. That is where the album suffers most. Destructos sounds evil as shit, listen to it with headphones on...it is monstrous. I'm like everyone else, I wanted some twisted speed and evil shit through and through but we must accept what we got and I don't think it's as bad as some of you make it out to be.

I'd like to give it a second chance but the lyrics are so ridiculously over the top I can't take it seriously. It makes the whole thing come off as cartoonish. Not what I expect from artists of Morbid Angel's caliber.

no artist wants to say their work is shit, what else can he do but spin it the way he does. If the next album is a return to form this mess of a album could be forgotten. Look at machine head and celtic frost for evidence of bands who took major misteps but came back strong. However , this album is probably worse than cold lake.

Cold Lake....wtf. This is not even remotely close to being a wannabe hair metal deal. At least use relevant comparisons. This is a plain indicator of how far off base many of you are.

At it's best, IDI is a mediocre mesh of uninspired death metal and monotonous techno. At it's worst, its a cringe worthy, unfocused mess. I do like the last song on the album enough, but as a whole, it's really bad. "Radikult" and "Too Extreme!" are Morbid Angel songs? I'm a die hard fan of Morbid Angel, and after years of defending the band, I just can't bet behind this. Its not growing on me at all. When people say "Too Extreme!", they're not exactly showing support.

My favorite album is Formulas Fatal to the Flesh.

They should have called it something else besides Morbid Angel and made it a project.
There's only 2-3 songs that even resemble death metal and to wait 8 years for it, just makes it that much more disappointing.
And I thought Heretic was bad.....

because 20% of the album is good MA while the rest of the album almost hypnotized me into throwing a Brittany Spears dance party. MA is "truly morbid"!

"The whole band is still together"

Not really, right, David?

What's really horrible with the record is that the 'outside and weird' stuff they tried to incorporate sounds dated and amateur. It could have been innovative and forward-thinking but they missed it completely. The more ,traditional' material sounds uninspired and generic, almost formulaic. This doesn't help either.

They have one chance to correct all this with the next album and even then people will be careful; Probably downloading it first to see if its another turd. Either way, MA will never be the same again and this is what's most saddening.

The greats have fallen, once again!

I agree with a lot of the comments on here. It seems people are looking at this with a bit more of a clear head. I didn't like it either but whatever I think people have forgotten that they have been padding their albums with off the wall stuff for years. This one was just too big of a mess though.

but the last album was a huge disappointment nonetheless.

Gateways could have been a great album if it wasn't overproduced. That sterile sound works against the sludginess. It just doesn't work imo, although the album has some great songs.

Basajuan = Clueless fanboy

The only songs that I would call death metal are Nevermore, Blades For Baal and Existo Vulgore. Maybe there are hints here and there on the rest of the album but not much else.

That's 3 songs, how is that a lie you imbecile?

Anybody remember the Trey Azagthoth interview in Pit Mag where he stated that Morbid Angel is the best Death Metal band in the world and that they make the most money which proves that they're the best. He even said that no other Death Metal bands even come close to Morbid Angel and then the editor asked him if he was worried about the readers finding him arrogant, he said that he was not being arrogant, that he was just speaking the facts.

Anyway I believe because of that attitude, they think they could do anything and that their fans would always be there. Even when you read the bio on their website, these guys really put themselves up on a huge pedestal. They can try to tell everyone that this "insanus" is "too extreme" or now it's "growing on people" but the truth is, karma has finally cought up to them.

"Great thing is that Morbid Angel doesn't give a fuck on what onedimensional fans think, and I hope it will be like that until the end."

If they don't care, why is their set made up of predominantly classic songs?

it has nothing to do with being one dimensional. it's about whether the music is good or not. The 'oh you too narrow minded to understand this' argument is weak as fuck.

Morbid Angel is not high art. They make death metal, and they haven't made quality death metal in a long fucking time. That is the point.

the rest is noise.

Beauty meets beast? Please!

Like someone else said, it's not about being one dimensional, if an album sucks it sucks!

If this album is so good, why do they play hardly anything (if anything) off it live?

If you like the album, good for you, realise you are in the minority!

As musicians, they should be as creative as they wish, and make the music they want. As fans, we can hear it and judge for ourselves. They can love it, and we can hate it. That doesn't make the band bad people. I've always enjoyed Morbid Angel's weird instrumental stuff in between heavy as fuck tracks, and I still have much respect for the band. IDI was most likely approached with exciting ambitions, but 6 minute monotonous techno tracks, and "Radikult" (WHY!!! UGH!) severely bog this album down.
