CLIFF BURTON's Pre-METALLICA Band TRAUMA To Perform At His Birthday Celebration - Nov. 23, 2012
A special event for the late METALLICA bassist Cliff Burton, a.k.a. The Major Rager On The Four-String Motherfucker, will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2013 — on what would have been Cliff's 51st birthday — at the Brick & Mortar Music Hall in San Francisco, California. For the first time in decades, Burton's pre-METALLICA band TRAUMA is actually going to perform never-heard-before songs written by Cliff himself. Also scheduled to appear are HELLFIRE and DAMAGE INC.

TRAUMA's music was comparable to that of IRON MAIDEN and MONTROSE with faster tempos, which can be heard in the tracks "The Day All Hell Broke Loose" and "Lay Low" from their debut album.

TRAUMA drummer Kris Gustofson went on to play in numerous other bands, most notably ST. ELMO'S FIRE.

TRAUMA guitarist Michael Overton was interviewed for the 2009 book "To Live Is To Die: The Life And Death Of Metallica's Cliff Burton", written by U.K.-based author Joel McIver and published by Jawbone Press.

Burton, best known as a heavy metal bass player who made use of distortion and special effects, was killed in an accident on September 27, 1986 at the age of 24, four years after joining METALLICA. It was Burton's early influence that helped create METALLICA's unique musical style for which the band has become famous.

Even after 26 years, it's still so sad to think what happened to this poor guy. Dude had so much talent and to be taken in such a horrific is still sickening.

551st birthday?

5051st birthday?

50051st birthday?

500051st birthday?

Sad that he died young, but everyone dies. Celebrity is such a fucked up thing. Think of all the 24 year olds who died in car accidents since 1986 (including the bass player in my old band, yes, he died at age 24 in a car crash too). Shouldn't we have annual public events for all of them too? Nice to commemorate a friend, but I didn't know Cliff personally so this means nothing to me.

You know, I will agree that Lars is a dick, but to say he should have been laying under the bus is absolute bullshit. Get some morals already. Or you could just keep trolling and look like a complete asshole to everyone, it's your call. Think before you type!!

fulgrim - think about this: if not for Lars, Metallica may well have never been. And as we all (should) know, Metallica usrered in a whole new era of great metal bands. The guy was a driving force that was all about all things metal.

Show some respect.

hey blackwater park that was a totally uncalled for comment. Cliff Burton made a HUGE contribution to the world of music in just 4 years and 3 albums. He means a lot to million of people so yes if a few folks in the bay area want to have a special event to honor his memory that is nice and acceptable. People do this shit everyday. You yourself can do this for your lost bass player if you want. Leave your bullshit somewhere else no one cares to read it here.

As much as I like Cliff and as much as his role in Metallica kind of influenced a lot of thing in Metal in general, he wasn't the genius and virtuoso people made a legend out of, really.

He was a good bass player and had good ideas. He helped bring in more musicality in Metallica and surely helped a bit with their professionalism too.

Give a listen to any of the isolated tracks you can find on Youtube and you'll realize he wasn't doing rocket science on bass. His playing is sloppy and muddy on a lot of places.

It doesn't take anything away from him, on the opposite. It just clarifies a few bits, I guess.

When people dies, their talent and legacy gets boosted out of proportion.

Let's celebrate Cliff for the musician, friend and son he was. It's already enough.

Or see him play live? (I did)

I wouldn't say he was the greatest ever (Cliff himself would probably shudder to think of himself that way). But the dude was kick-ass on the instrument and was better than most out there. And he contributed immensly to what was arguably (at the time) the most important band in metal.

He wasn't a Steve Vai on bass... more like the Randy Rhoads of bass. Which I think matters more.

What's more is, Metallica didn't make him. He made Metallica!

no doubt Cliff was an awesome bass player, and what he accomplished was great. But is his life more valuable than my bass player who died? Or all the other 24 year olds who will die this year? Or anyone else for that matter? He made some good tunes. He died. His friends remember him. Awesome. Next.

You are WRONG TheEagle. Cliff was innovative, creative, and one of the most influential bass players of all time. He influenced many millions of people to want to be a bass guitarist, including me. He was truly ahead of his time and made the bass guitar sound like a completely different instrument. When he was around back in the early 80's, there wasn't any other bass guitarist out there that made the bass guitar sound the way that he did. One of a kind and is truly innovative. His banging was also LEGENDARY. Ask Scott Ian. Ask Jason Newsted how influential Cliff Burton was.

Clifford Ray Burton was/is a bonafide LEGEND.

I USED TO SEE TRAUMA PLAY ALL THE TIME. GOOD BUNCH OF DUDES.

AND FOR ALL OF THE CLIFF HATERS, YOU OBVIOUSLY NEVER GOT TO SEE HIM PLAY LIVE OR SIT WITH HIM AT A PARTY AND WATCH HIM COME UP WITH AMAZING RIFFS THAT WOULD LATER HELP DEFINE THE THRASH GENRE.

I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU AND YOUR IGNORANCE.

Cliff was not a technical virtuoso in a note-perfect way, but the guy was heavy as fuck. And let's not mince words when it comes to 'the sound of Cliff Burton' - it was a rage n' thrash fest of the highest order.

The distorted sound of a madman at play - that was Cliff Burton.

Hey come on fanboys! Cliff was a cool guy and he helped push the envelope of his instrument in a specific genre. No disrespect to him at all! Let's put him along Lemmy and Steve Harris who also both helped push the instrument in their respective genres...

What you guys seems to misunderstand is that BECAUSE he died his legacy was taken out of proportions. The same happened with Hendrix and Cobain. Their generation idolized them because they were taken away from them tragically.

Cliff was a good writer, had stage presence and sadly passed away to early.
