SCOTT WEILAND Is 'Completely Open' To Reuniting With VELVET REVOLVER - Nov. 21, 2012
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS frontman Scott Weiland tells RollingStone.com that he is excited about possibly reuniting with VELVET REVOLVER, which has been on hiatus since he was fired from the band in April 2008. "I am completely open to it, and I know there are other guys in the band that are completely open to it," he says. "There have been some things that have stood in the way that aren't anything that have to do with the band — just other players, whether it be agents . . . But now we're sorting through things, and we want to start writing for some big film opportunities that have come our way, and try to set things up the way we set things up when we initially got together.

"I think it's the perfect time for VELVET REVOLVER to get back together," he continues. "Slash has done some great things, and I look forward to the opportunity to seeing him on my left and seeing Duff McKagan — who, in my opinion, is without a doubt one of the greatest rock and roll and punk rock bass players of all time. And is still in amazing shape — is more ripped than just about any 25-year-old on the planet. And with Matt [Sorum] and Dave [Kushner] as well, who are just incredible musicians. I think that's exciting to look forward to. It's the old cliché, 'If the gods of rock want it to happen, then it will.'"

On the status of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, Weiland says, "I think we kind of overplayed ourselves by playing the same set over and over. I think the band needs to take some time off and be creative again. I always felt that our creativity and the growth we made within making records as artists was equally as important as we were as a live band. The transformation from 'Core' to where we ended up before we took that time off, when I started with VELVET REVOLVER, was enormous. I think we need to get back to that. I don't think that touring consistently with a greatest hits package gets you anywhere. It diminishes things."

During an appearance on Eddie Trunk's "Friday Night Rocks" radio show on New York's Q104.3 FM last May, Slash was asked whether there was any truth to the reports that VELVET REVOLVER was once again working with the STONE TEMPLE PILOTS frontman. "I talked to Dave Kushner and he said that he and Scott had some conversations at some point about getting back together. But I remember that was sort of Scott's M.O. when we did that reunion thing [VELVET REVOLVER reunited for a short performance at the January 'Love You Madly: A Concert For John O'Brien' at the House Of Blues in West Hollywood, California. (see video below) — Ed.] So he's been interested in burying the hatchet and getting back together and sort of juggling this whole STP/VELVET REVOLVER perfect-world thing. And I'm, like, there's no way that's gonna happen. I love Scott — he's a great guy when I'm not in a band with him. I'd just like to keep it that way. So there's no truth to this whole thing. [It's been given] way more attention than it even deserves."

Just as long as it doesn't interfere with the original GNR reunion then I'm ok with it.

But, is he off the dope yet? Cuz it's not going to do no good if he's not off the dope. Saw his solo show a few years ago and waited a very long time for him to hit the stage... Reportedly because he was high and unable to get to the stage. Then the performance was absolutely hideous!!!!

Of course he'd like VR back together. People would be buying tickets to see Slash, Duff, and Sorum. His meth looking, snaking around the stage act is old. Thinks he's an "artist" more than a rock & roller. Nothing lost by not seeing or hearing him.

would be great to have them back together and then make a new STP album too. and so what he snakes around the stage?? its just what he does, i doubt he's doing for any other reason then that, and its not like you are watching him doing it every day.
but i would like them to make a little heavier rock album then the second album, although that was a very good album. and i would be good to see some talentet rock band on the charts around all those untalented rappers and r&b "artists". but its nice to see Soundgarden in top 5, even though its a complex and strange album and not the typical 3 minute singalong radio songs.

you seem to be missing the point that Weiland is on fumes. I like Scott a lot, good singer, front man, and I found him to be very creative. Love STP. but he's burning every bridge he crosses. He left VR before(or fired) and said "I can't be doing that music, fitting into leather pants, playing hard rock forever, STP suit me more"(something like that)...then goes to STP, puts out their worst CD (love all the others), pulls the same BS with them, getting high, not showing up, etc.

He's trying to get something going w/VR cuz STP ran out of gas. Because of him. Great talent, but at age 45, the creative juices are waning, and if he's back dabbling, or even drinking, he's useless. In my mind, a wasted talent. He burnt STP too many times.

with all due respect, leave the charts to the pop artists. Led Zep, Stones, were never worried about the charts. Aerosmith is now on the charts, and they are a pop band. Put out a killer record, if it doesn't "chart", probably a good thing. Doesn't change my listening experience if they get a hit single.

There will be no GnR reunion. VR's albums went from boring to pathetic.

Live, they were quite good. But only because you got Slash in a top hat doing a solo spot. Close your eyes and pretend it's the good old days.

Plus Matt Sorum would probably end up killing Scott if they got back in the band. I saw a video on Youtube of Matt saying Scott took a swing at him after a show, and then he burst into laughter at the thought of that pathetic little skinny crackhead swinging for him.

This guy is such a poser. I saw the video for "Wicked Garden" the other day and it's amazing how much he copied Layne Staley and Eddie Vedder AT THE SAME TIME.

Looks like Scot's Christmas album was a complete failure like everything else he has done as of late. You are out of your mind to think SLash is willing to work with you again. Slash is happy with the band he is playing with now and no drama with current lineup. The second album LIBERA TURD was a watered down piece of shit because of Weiland's influence. Keep smokin that junk you jealous punk!

maybe fans would actually want to hear more new songs live? It wasn't a bad album, but it was really nothing great at all.

V.R's debut was really good imo, but the second album was a letdown. I remember wondering why the label did virtually no promotion for it whatsoever considering how successful the first album was; it just dropped in stores. then i heard it and realised why.

Unlike Audioslave, V.R actually had some potential. I wouldn't mind seeing them give it an honest third chance.

VR reuniting would be cool, just not with Scott Weiland. There has got to be a better hard rock singer / person out there.

...And not if it cuts into Slash's solo stuff, cause his solo stuff is better than anything VR has put out.

Not until Scott kicks his habits. Slash has see Scott's antics with STP. Its really sad to see stars who had it all throw it away to Hard drugs. Many loose to the point they die from them. Hendrix, Joplin, Bonham, Bon Scott, Morison, Just to name a few. The new Zeppelin is a great example Page was on top of it. He wasn't fumbling around high on heroin. He sounded awesome.

Now there's nothing wrong with a hit off a J, or a couple of beers after a show, to chill and relax. But when it inter fears with your ability to function and you cant make the stage or your just a plain embarrassment to the rest of the band, then its time to get help. Slash knows what the out come would be with Scott fronting such an endeavor. If Scott were sober for a few years then i could see Slash think about it. Until that happens no chance in hell, hell would in fact freeze over before Slash took on a addict like that.

Dont get me wrong i think Scott is a great singer, but he needs to

A: get sober

or

B: cut way back and only after a show never before.

VR album was a little weak, but I would much rather listen to VR than Slash's band. We know that Slash was trying very hard to replace Mr Weiland, so let's bury the hatchet and make it happen. Myles is more suited to sing for Alter Bridge.

Motivation is prolly $ but it is with many bands, especially manufactured super groups. I am sure he could contribute some valid writing. They are capable of a good studio album. Touring? I dunno. Scott had vocal chord problems twice recently singing shortened and toned down STP sets but VR's stuff live might be more demanding on his voice. They would have to space out the shows a bit and Scott would have to take good care of himself. The decision prolly comes down to Slash. These guys have been auditioning singers for a while so they have interest in VR, we know this.

Its a gamble, Scott's a gamble but I think Scott would want this thing to be good. He just announced he is getting married and he has a lot on the line since STP's last album did not blow the doors off as far as sales and some STP'S tour dates were rescheduled to downsized venues due to lower ticket sales. STP needs a break, they seem complacent with "Scott is who he is" type of thing . VR is Scott's next viable option and he is putting his interest out there. He needs to be sober, sounds like he was off the dope but doing a pills/booze thing. If he ain't sober, it's gonna be a tough sell.

I would like to see them give it a go but I doubt it happens.

On someone's comment on STP's last album flopping, everyone's album flops unless it sells 600 more projected units and it's considered a success.

I don't think Scott will make more money being in VR unless he stays with STP. I'm sure stp brings in more cash flow touring so I doubt it's a money thing. I would like a 3rd album.

Unfortunately, I think Scott will fight addiction till the day he dies. I do hope he is clean. He seems to be doing better off anytime he is sober.

I like Libertad. I still play it till this day.

VR really doesn't have to happen in all reality. Where can they play and get away with charging $45 again.

Scott's right about the set list. How the fuck you can play a lame pink floyd cover and not play the ferocious I ILLEGAL. Oh cause it's too hard to play?

I've been saying it for years, if Scott doesn't work out, get Vinnie Dombroski from Sponge. Go listen to Wax Ecstatic or skill of the kill and tell me this guy doesn't fit this band.

yea Libertad is a very good album, and much better then most of the crap on the charts. the last STP album was good but i would have liked it a little heavier.
but of course it must get tired sometimes for big bands to play the same songs over and over again, but if you wanna keep the big crowds and all the 1-2 songs an album(the hits) people you have to play the hits, but still most older bands are making great new music but still they have to play the hits and the songs that got them big and they made while they were the new cool bands. still that doesnt always mean they are better songs or albums, usually just different and more raw and the newer albums are more polished and more thought out and less hornyness because most of the guys have familys and such.

just hope he makes a new VR and STP album and some solo stuff too.

even happend when i saw Metallica few years back playing all of master of puppets, all the people around me saying how great they were and all that bullshit, and but they barely knew anything of that album and its their best album, but as soon as they started playing enter sandman and nothing else matter and those black albums songs they went crazy.

i bet its best to be in a good prog band were all of the people that buy your albums realy like all the songs and know all of them and you can almost play anything you want and still everyone knows it, bands like Dream Theater, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Rush just to mention some, but still there are always some songs you wanna hear, hits or not

Of course Sorum and Kushner are open to it. What else have they been doing? Slash is not going to take a step back and get back with that band, and Duff seems to be on his page as well.

Now, when Adler and Duff join Slash and Myles, shit, then I'll get excited. They should get Corabi on rhythm guitar too.
