JIMMY PAGE On LED ZEPPELIN's 2007 Reunion: 'Some Of Us Thought We Would Be Continuing' - Nov. 21, 2012
LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page spoke to Rolling Stone magazine about the band's just-released concert film, "Celebration Day", recorded and filmed at LED ZEPPELIN's December 10, 2007 reunion show at London's O2 Arena. The package, which is available on CD, DVD, and Blu-ray disc, commemorates ZEPPELIN's first full-scale, complete concert since July 7, 1980 at the band's final show with the late John Bonham in Berlin, Germany.

"Some of us thought we would be continuing, that there were going to be more concerts in the not-too-distant-future," Page told Rolling Stone Senior Writer David Fricke in the new issue, on stands Friday. "Because there was a lot of work being put into the show."

As it turned out, Robert Plant was unwilling to keep performing with LED ZEPPELIN after their 2007 reunion concert. "He was busy," said Page. "He was doing his Alison Krauss project. I wasn't fully aware it was going to be launched at the same time. So what do you do in a situation like that? I'd been working with the other two guys for the percentage of the rehearsals at the O2. We were connecting well. The weakness was that none of us sang."

Page recently shed some light on the band's rehearsals for the O2 show: "Actually the period that we rehearsed over, it may have run over six weeks, or whatever, but we weren't rehearsing every day. We had a little block here and a little block over there on the run up to it."

Bassist John Paul Jones was asked about how he felt after ZEPPELIN wrapped its first complete concert in over 27 years. "There was an immediate feeling of relief that we actually got through it and did well," he said. "I don't know. That was kind of. . . [laughs] I don't know. I didn't feel much after that, to be honest. It was kind of numbing. It was a really good place we were in, I think."

Jason Bonham, who filled in for his dad, whom he lost when he was only 14 years old, felt as though his whole life had been building up to drumming for ZEPPELIN. "But for me, as I said, it was a huge, huge honor to play," he said. "And all I was concentrating on the night, 'cause I knew there was that many people there — I was just concentrating who was on the stage. I just wanted to impress my mates here, my dad's friends."

Plant said that performing the band's 1976 "Presence" classic "For Your Life" for the first time onstage was a definite highlight of the show for him. "Just like Jason, I was amazed I was there playing with LED ZEPPELIN," he said. "And I was just saying, 'Now, where does the vocal come in?' And I know I made a couple of errors — 'just had to shut up instead of doing too much. But. . . I think that was my favorite part of the show, to be honest. Because we were. . . none of us could bring too much back from ever having ever played it before. It was a great experience and that is flying by the seat of the pants. These guys did such a great job on that. It was very exciting. Great light show, too."

Jimmy, just get with John and Jason and start a new band with a new vocalist. Don't call it Led Zeppelin and don't play Zeppelin stuff.

Write and record a album of all original material, just play new stuff live. Theres no doubt these guys have a serious chemistry with each other, if Plant doesn't want to be part of that, that's his prerogative.

I think new material would be AWESOME. Even better than a tour. With new material I bet Plant would be asking to come back.

I think its good that they didn't go on a tour. As much as I would love to see Zeppelin live, I think just playing this one show makes it more special and enhances the legendary mystique of the band.

And the new concert film/live album is fucking awesome. Since I've Been Loving You makes me moist

Zeppelin's concert film and cd are really well done. Although I am dissapointed that they didn't do more concerts, it was probably for the best. One concert, well done and well documented. Plant sounded good, but it is hard to tell how his voice would have handled a series of concerts. I guess the old entertainment business saying is true, best to leave them wanting more.

Mr. Plant, can you actually watch and listen to this—having been a part of it five years ago—and NOT want to go out and do some more shows???

If so, HOW????????

Robert Plant single handily robbed the world of a bigger Led Zep tour because he wanted to make that fucking garbage music with Alison Kraus.

Such nonsense, even if they had done 10 more dates in the biggest cities (NY, LA, Chicago, Paris, etc...) it would have been amazing.

But, noooooooooo, prima donna fuckface Plant ruined it.

'Raising Sand' was actually really cool. Not metal of course, but still a happening album.

we got one concert out of Plant. A summer of outdoor stadium shows would have been awesome, allowing Zep to come full circle. There seems to be a bitter taste left with just this one concert.

This was a great show. What i really loved about it they all looked and sounded great. Page was sober and wasn't fumbling around for his peddles. They sounded great. Having said that it would be cool if Plant thinks about it and do like monkeytime says a hand full of dates to give the fans what they have been craving for. They already have the money if they put the tickets in the price range of your average money earning person they would still be making money hand over fist. It is to bad Robert dont wanna do it. But i heard Myles Kennedy flew to the UK and did something with Page. I guess some recording happened but its in the can right now. Dont know who else was in with this. I think Jones was too Not for sure on that. That would be cool if it was a new branch out with the rest of the guys with a new front man. It would have to be under a new name though.

This is and was Led Zepplin Bohnam was there.

after having watched Celebration Day in a movie theater is how fucking great they were 5 years ago and that was it. One night, 2 hours, and no more. I'm sure Robert Plant couldn't have handled a full tour, but once and done when they were sounding so good really stings.

Sure it's a nice story to say they kept the mystique intact, Plant maintained his integrity, yeah I get it. But goddamn, they were brilliant that night, after all the worries that they would sound old, they were fucking awesome. Okay, they went out on top, I get it. I just wish I could have snagged one of those lottery tickets to see the last ever Led Zeppelin concert.

He's just about the only guy from his generation that can still hit all the crazy high notes.

I think it would be amazing - but don't call it Zep.

All I can say is that dvd is unreal! I actually think the JPJ and JB saved Page a few times, Page got a little over eager, played too fast for some parts, butchered some others, etc, etc. You could tell Plant was really enjoying it too, especially during Kashmir. But in the end, that show was all about Jason, it was touching! Loved it!

a fantastic album for serious music fans. Don't bother if you only like metal or something lame like that. New DVD is great, might get it for myself for Christmas. Plant sounds great as usual. Would be good if they did something else.

At the end of the road, Plants decision to let things rest will be the wise decision. Celebration Day with John Bonham's son was really the way to go out, kind of a full circle deal. They can can tinker with some old stuff and remasters but they should let the mighty Zep where it is otherwise. They only live stuff they should work on is releasing some more classic video from the John Bonham era, that's honoring the thing the right way at this point.

Plant hasn't been able to sing since 1976! He's the weak link. Get a singer that can really sing and hit the road!
