BLACK SABBATH Guitarist Laying Down More Tracks For New Album - Nov. 19, 2012
According to a post on BLACK SABBATH's official Facebook page, the band's guitarist, Tony Iommi, "is tracking more guitars on the new [SABBATH] album today."

Iommi clarified the status of the band's new CD in an interview with "The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show". Although it has been reported that the band has recorded 15 songs, Iommi explained, "That's wrong . . . We've written 15 songs and we've played them all. But now, at the moment, we're recording them. We recorded them at my house first, in England, just as demos, but now we're doing them for real. So we're about six tracks in now, at the moment."

Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne and bassist Geezer Butler are recording their first album together under the SABBATH name since 1978's "Never Say Die".

The drums on the disc are being handled by Tommy Clufetos, who has replaced founding drummer Bill Ward due to a contractual dispute between Ward and the rest of the group.

Asked if there is any chance of Ward rejoining the band, Iommi said, "We'll always have a heart for Bill, but I think it's gone past that now, because it's gone on so long that I don't see that happening at the moment. Maybe at some point we might [play together again]."

Meanwhile, SABBATH has announced an Australian tour for next April and has also revealed that it will headline the first-ever Japanese version of Ozzfest on May 11-12, with SLIPKNOT also on the bill.

Free Bill Fuck!

I'm just glad Tony Iommi is still vertical, and we should at least receive one last gift from him in the form of a new album. Sorry for Bill, but Tony Iommi is Black Sabbath.

The riffs will be killer on this CD, Sadly, I think that will be the only good thing about this CD.

Too bad no Ward. Why replace him with Tommy Doofus? Why not Vinny Appice?

This is going to be a big time commercial album. You have big names, $haron Osbourne in the mix etc. It's just never going to be the same as it was back in the day.

If Bill Ward was there I could maybe get a bit more excited. If "Ozzfest" wasn't mentioned in the same name as this album or the name 'Slipknot' I could get a bit more excited as well.

Tony and Geezer will always play well. But I can't see this being a true Black Sabbath album with a washed up Ozzy, Rick Rubin, and who ever is playing drums

What do these dates have in common?

1980
1983
1985
1993
1995
2011

Yes, those dates are years that Bill Ward has quit Sabbath, either while in the studio, on tour, or otherwise, but every time essentially leaving Black Sabbath in a mad dash to find a replacement. And every single time he does it, Tony leaves the door open for him to come back.

Let's be honest here, Bill's fucking unreliable and he always has been. 1997, with Mike Bordin? They couldn't do it with Bill because he wanted too much money and he simply wasn't up to playing like he could, but, by the time 1998 rolled around, they had shit ironed out, Bill's playing was up to speed and we got the real reunion out of it, so...I have no doubt that the same thing will happen again, eventually.

In all seriousness, this IS Black Sabbath, just a different version of it. Anybody Tony Iommi chooses to call Black Sabbath IS Black Sabbath, doesn't matter who it is, it's HIS guitar that MAKES Black Sabbath what it is, not Geezer's bass, not Ozzy or Ronnie's singing, not Bill's drumming, and it's just basically fucking stupid to pretend otherwise.

That said, Bill needs to get a grip, put on his big girl pants, accept the reality that he's not going to make a hundred million billion dollars for playing in Sabbath (but FAR more than anything any of us posting are ever bound to make) and just get it together for the fans, there's absolutely no reason he can't other than him - as has always been the case whenever he quits.

The door's open, Bill, just get your shit together, call Tony and Geezer and Ozzy, APOLOGIZE FOR BEING UNREASONABLE and ask to come play, it's not that difficult for you, is it?

I mean, fuck, nobody wants Tommy Clufetos drumming...

Thumbs up if you agree, thumbs down if you agree.

When they did the first "reunion" with Mike Bordin. Bill Ward was not even ASKED to participate! They all said that. So you are just completely fucking full of shit right there!

I'm sure he is just asking for a reasonable percentage now and they offered him some sideman salary. Like they couldn't afford to pay him what he wants? Yeah, I'm sure he demanded a hundred million billion dollars. I'm guessing he asked for 10% instead 5%. But it was just so unreasonable there was no way they could come up with that much cash!

Way to rewrite history dude. You should get a job working for Geoff Tate!

The rest of you fucking pussies can cave in - and they knew you would which is the reason they can get away with this - but I'm an not spending one fucking penny on Black Sabbath ever again if they release a "reunion" album without the ORIGINAL FOUR! Which is what they promised us on 11/11/11.

Good piece there, AGN 666, but I only disagree in that Tony *isn't* Sabbath on his own: without Geezer's bass and lyrics, Ozzy's vocals and melodies or Bill's jazzman-like drumming, that becomes the Sabbath Sound. True, Tony Iommi is a Godhead Genius Riffmeister, but without the others it's not quite the same. I'm still looking forward to the new album, Bill or no Bill. The business end fucks with things way too much. 25%, 25%, 25% & 25%. Especially so, as it's been so many years and this may very well be the last time Sabbath gets a chance to make a new album with the original cats.

I disagree. Tony's guitar playing OF COURSE is a big part of the Sabbath sound but BS is/was an ensemble. I can never quite understand this mindset that you can change a single member of an ensemble and still expect to get consistent results. Nuance, nuance, nuance. Bill Ward's drumming was a big part of the Black Sabbath sound. Appice is great in his own regard but he had this balls to the wall, heavy hitting style. Ward had a more nuanced jazz/improv influenced style which is not easy to replicate. Tommy two shoes can go fuck himself. I know what to expect out of him. Heavy on the down beat and ignore every note in between pretty much. This is going to be Sabbath with a dislocated sound.

I absolutely love Sabbath. And the lack of Bill Ward isn't a huge deal for me. But somehow, I can't really get excited about this album. I fear that it will be EXACTLY what I expect.

Just very, very heavy, slow, a lot of doom elements, typical Ozzy vocal lines on top of it etc., and just the general feeling that you've heard it all a thousand times before.

I really want to be surprised. 'Cause if you look on the Sabbath albums, up until Dehumanizer, none of them were ever what you expected. So the question remains ...have they still got the musical fire burning inside, or will they follow the standard Sabbath-formula?

"When they did the first "reunion" with Mike Bordin. Bill Ward was not even ASKED to participate! They all said that. So you are just completely fucking full of shit right there!"

- You are correct. I should have been more specific in that...it was NOT that he was asking for too much money THEN, but that he wasn't asked due to the fact that his chops were not up to par, and if memory serves, I believe there was an interview some years down the road where Bill admitted that, and I certainly remember an interview with Tony where he alluded to the same thing. That said, I eat my hat.

"I'm sure he is just asking for a reasonable percentage now and they offered him some sideman salary."

- I disagree. Ozzy, Tony and Geezer all being on the same page about Bill asking for a ridiculous amount of money means, to me, that Bill was asking for a ridiculous amount of money. Saying so due to the fact that you can barely get Ozzy, Tony and Geezer to agree about ANYTHING, thus, I'm inclined to believe three individuals with the same story over one individual saying something completely different. That's only logical.

"Like they couldn't afford to pay him what he wants?"

- It's not a matter of that, it's a matter of being reasonable, and the reasonable facts that fit the picture of a reunion is that, in truth, Bill is the most expendable member. Does that mean he deserves less? No, but the reality of it is that Tony and Geezer ARE going to command the lion's share of the profit due to the fact that they've put more into Sabbath over the years than Bill or Ozzy. Ozzy's going to command more due to the fact that his name is going to draw a fuckload more money than, say, a reunion with Tony Martin will. That's reality.

"Yeah, I'm sure he demanded a hundred million billion dollars."

- I was of course exaggerating, but the logic remains solid. Geezer spoke for the band when they looked at Bill's demands and found them absurd and astronomical to the point where they thought he must be joking.

"I'm guessing he asked for 10% instead 5%."

- And, you're guessing.

"But it was just so unreasonable there was no way they could come up with that much cash!"

- It's entirely possible that Bill could have been asking for 30%, 40% or hell, even half. Nobody really knows the numbers, so everything's pure speculation, but what ISN'T is that Bill was asking for too much money and NOBODY was willing to go so far overboard as to give in, and they were so direct about that that they were willing to go up against the fans and look like complete assholes, and why? Because Bill's demands were so outrageous that that was better than looking like nice guys and giving him what they apparently KNOW is far more than reasonable. Those are not 'opinions', those are FACTS and they've played out in the public forum so there's no disputing it.

"Way to rewrite history dude. You should get a job working for Geoff Tate!"

- The only "rewrite" there's been was the '97 Mike Bordin error. You're reaching to assume otherwise without facts in evidence.

"The rest of you fucking pussies can cave in - and they knew you would which is the reason they can get away with this - but I'm an not spending one fucking penny on Black Sabbath ever again if they release a "reunion" album without the ORIGINAL FOUR! Which is what they promised us on 11/11/11."

- And what they would have delivered if BILL WARD had not gone crying to the public looking for people to get their panties in a bunch about him. Hey, don't get me wrong, I'D LOVE Bill to be a part of this, but if Tony, Geezer and Ozzy (the three dominant guys in the Sabbath sound) are just unable to work with him, than Bill's the problem.

I would encourage you not to spend 'one fucking penny' on Bill Ward for backing out of this AFTER he publically agreed to it (which, IMO, is a fucking dick move on his part, FAR more than Sabbath not paying him his money), but let's be honest, you wouldn't anyway....
