GEOFF TATE: 'I Think The Music Industry Is In A State Of Rearrangement' - Nov. 19, 2012
Sara Escalante of VintageRock.com recently conducted an interview with QUEENSRŸCHE vocalist Geoff Tate. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

VintageRock.com: It's been about a decade since the release of your self-titled solo album, which you described as a very introspective project. I read recently that with the new album, "Kings & Thieves", you were "ready to rock" and were focused on making a "solid rock album." What drove that shift and how has the process of creating this album been different than the last?

Tate: One's first solo album is typically a drastic step away from what one is used to doing, because by the time you make a solo record you really want to make something different. You want to work with different people. You want to have a fresher approach. So my first solo album is definitely that. It's an exploration of my different musical influences — there's a lot of jazz and R&B influenced music on that record. And with this album I just really wanted to focus on my rock roots. The whole project was really fun to make, and actually really quick too. I started the record January 2, 2012, and finished it July 15, so it went really fast in comparison to other records I've done in my career — some of them took years to make.

VintageRock.com: You've attributed life as a big inspiration for your music — can you elaborate on that for our readers, perhaps give us a glimpse into your creative process?

Tate: Life is very inspirational. There's a lot going on, and I think if you just open up your mind and your heart and your eyes to what's happening around you, inspiration will translate into your writing. I just try and pay attention to what's going on; not only to myself, but also to the people around me, the people I love. And then I take a step further outside and make an observation of what's happening in the place I live or with the people I come in contact with. I take inspiration from all these different things so I'm really never at a loss for something to write about. And I think there is something to be said for writing about what you know, writing about what's important to you. Often times the best kinds of songs come from that.

VintageRock.com: Because you have been in the business for almost four decades, I'm wondering, how you feel about the impact the Internet has had on music — iTunes, Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud, Facebook, Twitter, etc — how have these entities affected the music industry and musicians in particular?

Tate: I think the music industry is in a state of rearrangement. It used to operate within certain parameters, it had a system set in place, and that whole system has changed now. The record industry, as it exists today, is nothing even close to the record industry that I started out in years ago. It's changed so drastically, and one of the things that are very challenging is actually communicating with people. We live in what they call "the communication age," but in a way it's a lot more difficult to communicate with people. They don't go to the same publications anymore, they don't go to the entertainment section of a newspaper to find out what's going on, in fact, most people don't even read newspapers nowadays because that's all been replaced with technology. And, unfortunately, a lot of the people that are in the industry, such as club owners and promoters, still cling onto this old way of doing things, but the old way doesn't work anymore. You have to find new ways of reaching people and letting them know you have an album out, for example, or that you're going on tour, and that is the biggest challenge — reaching people. So it's an interesting time, a time of change and opportunity for people with vision to set up a new way of doing things.

Sounds like he's blaming club owners and promoters for his poor turnout at shows. It's not hard to let people know you have an album out when you're an established personality. The question becomes "does anybody CARE that you have an album out?".

What I think is so funny is that all you douche bags keep bagging on Tate.... Seems like a waste of time to read an article on someone that you are just going to talk shit about anyways. We all know the dude fucked up! We all know he's still the voice of what was a once great band! But for fucks sake lets keep with what the metal community once was and stay together... This isn't Tu PAC and Biggy here!

Geoff, I mean Jeff (your birthname before you wanted to sound more distinguished), We don't want to hear you open your mouth on anything at this point. You are a disgrace to your former fans, and the biggest embarrassment in the rock scene the last year.

Too bad there wasn't a category for biggest liar of the year, biggest downfall of the year, biggest media whore of the year, biggest midlife crisis of the year, and biggest alcoholic of the year.

You have won DOUCHE OF THE YEAR. It is official. Congratulations.

The anti-Tate contingent here have lost their mind. It happens. I have no problem voicing my minority opinion here, but you guys have gone so far off the deep end that the whole exercise seem fruitless. It's not enough to have 90% of the people share your opinion, but you have to discount any facts that are pro Tate and call them lies? Examples:

-Tate didn't even sell the small amount of 1800 records last week, he bought them himself.
-Tate didn't write 100% of the lyrics on songs he was credited on, someone else did.
-A married father of 5 is gay.
-He pulled a knife on his band mates, whenever single damaging detail about that incident has been described in pain staking detail in court documents by the remaining 3 members.....and no word of a knife has ever been mentioned.
-Any of the few thumbs down on posts that are anti-Tate are family members, not just 6 of the 3 million people that bought Empire that happen to support GT.
-The pro Tate family members are called "obsessed", yet the anti-Tate crew posts 10x on each thread with the crazed passion of someone who must have personally been assaulted or wronged by GT.

Then there is this criminal who keeps posting in run on sentences that GT is a pedophile, his wife is a cheating their and his underage daughters (who he calls out by name) are transsexuals and that Tate should murder them and then kill himself. If any of these comments were made on the phone, via e-mail or at a subway stop this person would be put in jail. Yet you seem to accept this as a fair representation of your team. You can't have a discussion when one side refuses to acknowledge simple facts that come from the other side. It would be the same as if I said that the posts on this site are mostly pro Tate. I would but I'm not delusional or blinded by hate. It's just music.

Hey Taint lickers, we don't talk about the knife rumor anymore. No mention of that was made in the legal documents we (at least those of us who are literate) read.

Blabbermouth has lots of basement dwelling trolls. Page hits are obviously more important to Blabbermouth than decorum.

I believe Team Taint bought a lot of those 1800 records. They will resell them at their wine bar gigs, or perhaps give them away with a purchase of Insania.

@ Carlwillat

I will not have you saying negative things about $lave1's posts. I need my $lave1 posts. His creativity and talent for knocking out the printed word is one of life's great pleasures. Where else can you incredibly descriptive diatribes about Tate's female family members not having actual taints, but rather, anal/vaginal slopholes that both release waste AND crank out babies? Where else can I read about vaginas having min-penises growing out of them? I PUT IT TO YOU CARL!!!! You tell me where else I can read things like that!

$lave1 should get the Pulitzer for his literary contributions here on all these Tate stories.

Based on ehat I saw, I believe its posts are being rescinded based on abuse of forum respect rules.

Yes, spend the energy dealing with issues u have with your family, friends, your boss, not some band. Better to go find some music to enjoy - there is much out there - and be happy. The fact that QR was beloved to diehard fans i believe makes this all harder for us but need to channel that a litttle more positively.

if the forthcoming QR album is awesome and the fans love it, then they are redeemed in a way. It's a critical point in their careers now. I think they should have made the change years ago. It would have been better for both parties, working relationships break down sometimes, it happens. But now they have this "damaged" back catalogue and have a lot of time to make up for.

I'm not favoring either side but I can't believe a band like this would want to get rid of their singer just over money. Too risky. Also, the PR blitz by GT and team is annoying. Remember the video they did?? Absolute propaganda.

COMMENT | Tate's has problem with communicating with people

So Tate has a problem with the modern world and letting them know he has a new cd out. WTF, he is on Blabbermouth every freakin day with some lame interview. Hell, with itunes, Amazon, internet search engines, twitter and Facebitch this guy has access to greater PR for his new release than 20 years ago.

No, the problem Tate has is that his creative efforts are not what many of us are willing to pay for and his behavior has sucked. I bought Dedicated to Chaos. I was not going to pay for a sequel, and that is what Kings and Thieves is. Well, except the lyrics have more of a Spinal Tap vibe. You can PR and advertise all you want, but if the quality sucks, few will buy. And those that got burned, will be less likely to buy your next cd.

Yeah, Tate has a problem with this modern world of communication. He tells the Rocklahoma fans that they suck during the concert. Great communication, still trying to figure out what the hell he was thinking. K&T cd and concert sales are probably not too good in the sooner state. Insulting your fans is probably not a good idea when communicating.

Then there is the communication via video and Youtube. The video footage of his spitting on Rockenfeld during the concert in Brazil communicated a lot to me and my 16 year old son. My son classified that as punk assed BS. I took him and my wife to see Queensryche at House of Blues last year. After seeing the video, he is done with Tate.

Then there are the depositions in the legal case that he initiated. Public discosure and transparancy create quite a communication problem for Tate. I have no confidence in his integrity, so I can't believe that his interview words are anything more than PR.

Communicating usually requires speaking, listening and considering what we hear. I don't think Tate likes listening to anything but being told that he is great and that his work is brilliant. In an earlier interview he stated that he had no idea that there was a problem in Queensryche and that he was going to be fired. Really? If that is true, he did a lot of talking but no listening. If false (which is more likely), he spoke and expected everyone to follow and wan't interested in the other guys opinions or objections. Do it his way, or he would take his voice and walk. They probably submitted their music ideas, and he rejected them. His way, his voice. After Cabaret tour, Dedicated to Chaos and Tates secret Mindcrime movie deal, and wife involved with managing the band they finally realized they had to fire his ass.

Sad really. Hopefully Tate listens to "Best I Can" on Empire and applies it to himself, and has a revelation. The only way his communication can be well received is to change his ways, start living an honorable life, and create music that is not "... fun to make, and actually really quick too.". Queensryche classic music was hard/metal/prog rock that was well crafted, well produced, and the lyrics resonated with people. Tate needs to realize that his current work with references to being being riden like an exercise machine won't cut it.

In contrast, you have Queensryche moving on. With Barton producing, I have hope that their new music will be well crafted. Hopefully they take time and write quality music, the teaser gives me a reason for optimism. I have more hope now than in 2011.

Geoff Tate 1992: Voice of Queensryche; 3 million albums sold (Empire), Sold Out Arena Tour, Grammy nomination, arguably the biggest prog metal band to ever exist...

Geoff Tate 2012: 2 shitty solo records over a decade, 200 - 300 people per show, playing with a bunch of hacks, vocals completely shot, held responsible for the ruin of Queensryche...

A 20 year downward spiral from the top.

Well it does seem like promotion is getting lost nowadays somewhat. I suspect alot of people think that they can just post something on facebook and everyone will know. Not everyone is on there. And the old school way of print and radio seems to be non existent but I think that has more to do with all the media being controlled by a few companies who either don't want to promote or charge a arm and a leg that is unrealistic.

Real music and musicians are being suppressed more so now than anytime in history. The few who run this country do not want you exposed to anything but prime directed "pop" garbage with no substance. Don't think, just enjoy today and move on to the next fad we will shove down your ears and convince you to buy to be popular or "in the know" . Real artists are thought provoking and inspire people to become questioners and reactionist who will stand up and question authority. Another reason they do not seem to really care about the plague of illegal downloading. It will only kill the artists and force them to no longer be self-employed and submit to the machine.

I just purchased the latest record from Queensryche. Just wanted to hear what the fuss is about. I have to say that I listened to it and thought it was great. Even though its not metal compared to the classic but its Queensryche all right. Geoff's voice sounds like Bowie at times. It reminds me of when Kiss released The Elder and everyone went what the fuck is that. I understood what it meant and loved it. Eventually Kiss's next recorded was the heaviest of them all. Too bad Geoff lost his cool with his bad behavior. Can't torcher the man forever. Geoff will always be one my favorite singers.

Who are you firereaverx? Are you Mister Mish's replacement , or the same person with a new "secret identity" to push your propaganda against educated x fans of Tate?

Your posts are fucking ludicrous! Hilarious!

You would have been great working for Stalin back in the good ole days.

I think one of Geoff's biggest problems is that his comments reach too many people through technology, so in a way I would agree with him.
