AC/DC's Entire Catalog Finally Available On iTunes - Nov. 19, 2012
Columbia Records and Apple today announced that AC/DC's entire catalog is now available digitally for the first time exclusively on the iTunes Store worldwide. From their 1976 debut "High Voltage" to seminal classic "Back In Black" and 2008 smash hit "Black Ice", every one of AC/DC's 16 studio albums, along with four live albums and three compilation albums, are available for the first time ever on the iTunes Store. All tracks are mastered for iTunes, and fans have the ability to download full albums or simply purchase their favorite individual songs. Fans can also choose from two specially packaged digital compilations: "The Complete Collection", the complete iTunes-exclusive AC/DC catalog; and "The Collection", which includes all 16 studio albums.

AC/DC's thunderous and primal rock and roll has excited fans for generations with their raw and rebellious brand of music, which also resonates with millions of new fans discovering AC/DC everyday. Their growing legion of fans will now experience the intensity of AC/DC's music in a way it has never been heard before. AC/DC's music has been mastered for iTunes, ensuring the music is delivered to listeners with increased audio fidelity, more closely replicating what the artists, recording engineers and producers intended.

The full catalog which has all been mastered for iTunes includes:

Collections:

* The Collection (all studio albums for $99.99)
* The Complete Collection (all studio albums, live albums and box sets for $149.99)

16 studio albums:

* High Voltage (1976)
* Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1976)
* Let There Be Rock (1977)
* Powerage (1978)
* Highway To Hell (1979)
* Back In Black (1980)
* For Those About To Rock We Salute You (1981)
* Flick Of The Switch (1983)
* 74 Jailbreak (1984)
* Fly On The Wall (1985)
* Who Made Who (1986)
* Blow Up Your Video (1988)
* The Razors Edge (1990)
* Ballbreaker (1995)
* Stiff Upper Lip (2000)
* Black Ice (2008)

Four live albums:

* If You Want Blood You've Got It (1978)
* Live (1992)
* Live (2 Volume Collector's Edition) (1992)
* Live At River Plate (2012)

Three compilation albums:

* Bonfire (1997)
* Backtracks (2009)
* Iron Man 2 (2010)

AC/DC had previously rejected iTunes distribution in an attempt to preserve the concept of the album.

"Since iTunes came into existence, we've actually increased our back-catalog sales without being on the site. We were sternly warned by our management team and our record label that the complete opposite would be the case," guitarist Angus Young said in an interview.

"I know THE BEATLES have changed but we're going to carry on like that," Angus told Sky News. "For us, it's the best way. We are a band who started off with albums and that's how we've always been. We always were a band that if you heard something [by AC/DC] on the radio, well, that's only three minutes. Usually the best tracks were on the albums."

Speaking to The Telegraph in a 2008, Young said, "If we were on iTunes, we know a certain percentage of people would only download two or three songs from the album — and we don't think that represents us musically."

"Maybe I'm just being old-fashioned, but this iTunes, God bless 'em, it's going to kill music if they're not careful," singer Brian Johnson told Reuters. "It's a...monster, this thing. It just worries me. And I'm sure they're just doing it all in the interest of making as much... cash as possible. Let's put it this way, it's certainly not for the... love, let's get that out of the way right away."

AC/DC will release "Live At River Plate" on November 20 as a the three-disc red vinyl or a two-CD set featuring multiple covers and a 24-page booklet. The live record follows last year's "Live At River Plate" DVD, filmed during their three triumphant Buenos Aires concerts on the "Black Ice" world tour, in December of 2009 in front of nearly 200,000 fans.

to love I Tunes. That's after buying 6000 cd's. If I only knew. I can see where it will eventually kill sales. It's a song driven world. Some artists will be okay. Most will suffer. AC/DC held out as long as possible. Your'e only cutting your own throat if your not available on I Tunes.

if your buying on itunes, you are an idiot.

Buy the CD with artwork, physical CD etc and rip it yourself - no restrictions and an ability to rip at lossless or higher bitrates. Shelve the CD as a back-up... and you can even leave your CD collection to someone after you die, you can't with itunes!

You're all idiots. Buy from Amazon Mp3. They have dirt cheap albums and you can let that shit sit in your Cloud player for free forever. No wasted shelf-space, no over-inflated prices.

I'm not going to attack AC/DC, but I did find their previous statements on locking the albums to be ridiculous. I mean every little bit of $ counts and $9.99 ain't cheap for everybody, so what if a fan just wants to buy You Shook Me or something for their Ipod? Kind of selfish to say they'll have to buy the whole album.

If they want "You Shook Me" by itself then you can get it from a Russian site for 9 cents.

Anybody that buys anything from iTunes is an idiot and deserves to take it in the ass for being stupid.

"Anglo-Australian"?!

Nobody in ACDC is from England (Anglo = English)... they have Scottish-born members

Seriously remember to keep your mouth shut if you ever visit Scotland!

Good point about Tool, but is it really bad to give in to ITunes? People download the songs/albums they want at a reasonable price with no risk of viruses or crappy sound quality. The artists make money and the fans stay connected to the music. It also allows for new generations of fans to find out about great music. What's not to like?

A "reasonable price" for a song is 10 cents NOT $1.49.

As long as its $1.49 I'll take it for free, thanks.

Damn. This must have been a record label decision then.
I really don't understand people downloading. The quality is crap, you get no album cover, liner notes, booklet eyc. But most of all you don't get to actually hold and touch it. Looks amazing having a nice big shelf full of albums.
Good luck when your computer crashes/breaks or gets a virus.

Sheesh. As someone who has bought around 1,200 physical CD's (and swore I'd never use iTunes), I finally gave it a whirl and now can understand it. Sure, $10-$12-$14 seems a bit much for a disc, but there's an old adage - "Things are worth what people will pay for them".

A couple of thoughts - I would feel safe in saying 99% of you would be unable to tell the difference between an full-bit rip of a tune vs an iTunes MP3. Get over yourself.

Also - I'm a huge AC/DC fan, but please, they're finally realizing what a gold mine they're missing. Sure, their sales may have increased without iTunes (they do tour constantly), but how much would they have gone up with iTunes availability too?

Someone mentioned you can't give away your iTunes library - sure I can. In my will, here's my password. Mums the word.

I really feel the reason some bands hate iTunes is that the consumer is finally getting a little control. So many bands these days have one or two great songs, and the rest of the album is complete crap. Nothing like spending $15 to get one good song. Bands are realizing that the single won't help them retire any more. They need a complete album of killer tracks. Ironically, the main reason AC/DC should be on there to begin with.

I've found the ease of buying tunes on iTunes, and not having to mess with ripping, cataloging, storing, blah blah blah, far outweighs and audio deficiencies.

There. I said it.

If you absolutely must listen to your music via digital download - go with a properly ripped flac.

I used to buy CDs all the time...at one point I had over 1000. I probably still have about 500, but I never use them. They are collecting dust in storage. Liner notes, album covers, etc...I don't care. There is this thing called the internet where I can find an infinity of photos and information about a band, so I don't feel the need to have the hard copy of their CD. There are a couple of exceptions: My very favorite band...I ALWAYS buy their new CD because they are my favorite. Duh. Second, I do buy music on iTunes to support local bands that I enjoy. To me, that is contributing to the artists who REALLY need support, whether it be financial or maybe just moral support to let them know that they kick ass. I bought all of AC/DC's CDs along time ago. I am keeping those. For new fans, they will be missing out if they only chose to download a song or two because Angus is right...most of their best songs aren't the ones they release as singles. I am so sick of You Shook Me All Night Long that I hope I never have to hear it again!

It is what it is. You can rail against the boogeyman and all that he represents all you want – it doesn’t mean that he’s not under your bed. For better or worse, like it or not, music is digital now. Get on board or become a relic – there are no other options.

Lots of people here confused. First, iTunes doesn't sell MP3s, they sell AACs. Different (and personally I'd say better) codec.

Second, this article failed to mention that the AC/DC discography has all been Mastered for iTunes which means the encodes were sourced from a special high-res master specifically made to take Apple's AAC encoder's idiosyncrasies into consideration. CDs are made from 16 bit masters which have been down-converted from the original (usually) higher-res master. When you encode the resulting rip (whether you're encoding to FLAC or MP3, etc.) the resulting file is still limited to those 16 bits, moreover that CD was not mastered taking an MP3 encoder into account (as obviously encoding to MP3 introduces loads of psychoacoustic changes to the audio).

Do some research. The Mastered for iTunes initiative has the potential to finally end the loudness wars, and I for one am supportive of anything that stops labels from destroying the music we love.

What the fuck is this? ?????? I am not familiar with this at all but let me get this straight....Is this telling me that someone would pay money for a mp3 of a song? i have heard a few mp3 versions of songs and it was the worst thing you could possibly do to music. Do you really need to listen to a song on your phone that bad? mp3 makes music damn near unidentifiable.

This doesn't matter to me anyways because I already own all of their albums.
