BLACK SABBATH Crowned Most Important British Metal Act Of All Time - Nov. 18, 2012
Iconic heavy metal band BLACK SABBATH was crowned the most important British hard rock act of all time in a major poll unveiled this weekend by record industry trade body the BPI.

The Birmingham-born pioneers of heavy metal, who have sold more than 70 million records worldwide — including the 1970 classic "Paranoid" — bagged almost half of the votes (45%) in a poll of more than 3,600 hard rock / metal fans. IRON MAIDEN and LED ZEPPELIN completed the trio of the most respected British hard rock legends, each taking one fifth of the votes.

Commenting on the poll-topping news, BLACK SABBATH said, "We are honored and flattered to be acknowledged in a poll like this which is voted for by the fans. We thank you."

Metallers confirmed Britain's reputation as the home of metal (75%), with two thirds (67.3%) praising Britain as a "world force" in the genre. Three out of four fans believe that Britain is still producing great artists, with Sheffield's WHILE SHE SLEEPS the act most hotly tipped for future success.

The survey — carried out partly in conjunction with leading publications Kerrang! and Metal Hammer — found that aficionados of hard rock and metal get bitten by the bug early, with over 40% discovering it before their teenage years.

Fans were also keen to showcase the positive aspects of the genre, with 79% stating they felt energised after listening to their favourite bands and almost three quarters (71%) saying it had helped them get through tough times. Two thirds (65%) said that they had made friends through their shared love of metal but only 12% of respondents said that rock and metal were the only genres of music they listened to, with indie, blues and electronic/dance all surprise hits.

Of all the great albums in the metal canon, METALLICA's self-titled smash was revealed to be the album metal fans would recommend as the ideal introduction to the genre. Released in 1991, it has sold some 30 million copies globally and produced the Top 10 U.K. hits "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters".

Indeed, they're the most important metal band of all time by default given they invented the genre. OK metal riffs you could argue came earlier than Sabbath but they were the first to embrace the style fully as a band.

Wrong Riotact. I thought the same thing at first. This is a Riotact fanboy that uses 2 tt's at the end of "act". Not sure if I agree with this though?? It says "best hard rock" act of all time. I would probably put Zeppelin and the Stones ahead of Sabbath.

In the 60's and 70's there was a lot of experimentation with rock music. It will always be heavily debated where one genre ends and another begins.

To me personally I do consider Sabbath to truly be the beginning of metal even if not all of their music was metal. Sabbath had a lot of Rock N' Roll and Blues in their sound.

The song Black Sabbath was something truly different for the time. The song that sealed the deal for me personally was Children of the Grave.

Maiden, while great, are not nearly as important (read influential) as Deep Purple and Venom are.

Which is not to say Abaddon should be putting out a drumming video out any time soon.

Only if you don't realize that Venom are directly responsible for both Death and Black Metal. Every author that's seen the genesis of metal gives them credit for this. No one states that they were the greatest players ever - but that's not what made them influential (and why I made the comment about Abaddon).

Sabbath arguably created Metal and inarguably created Doom.

Maiden on the other hand hasn't so much. Dual guitars - Priest, Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy, etc. Literature, fantasy-based, and historical based lyrics? Practically every band of the 1970s. They're a great band and I love them but they aren't terribly influential - it's just what they do they do *so well*.

Agreed! No one is more important to the genre of metal than Black Sabbath. I love Zepp too, and they have made some amazing contributions to the world of heavy music; along with Deep Purple, Cream, Venom, Vanilla Fudge, Motorhead; but Sabbath did the heavy rock heavier than anyone else could have. Where Zepp's heaviness was owed to John Bonham; Sabbath's was Tony's riffs and guitar tone. Of course, Ward was a tremendously powerful drummer, and Geezer's bass playing was like no other's, but there is not one guitar tone from anyone else in that time frame that hit as hard as Iommi's. Also, the other bands during this time were singing about peace, flowers, love, and women...Sabbath brought the doom and the darkness into the music with Geezer's sinister lyrics. Although Dio is the superior vocalist when comparing Ozzy's-era to Dio's-era; Ozzy's voice just fit with their sound greatly. To this day, there's not one singer than can be mistaken for Ozzy; his voice is just completely original. I'm more than excited for this new Sabbath record. Tony won't let them release anything unless it's golden. I have faith; and "The Devil You Know" is the proof.

Maiden are a massively influential band, they weren't responsible initially for dual guitar harmonies and fantasy lyrics but they are almost single handedly responsible for the power metal genre and every band with those traits will cite them as an influence. Outside of all this they are definitely the most loved band by the fans.

How can anyone even dare to argue that Sabbath isn't the most important? Master of Reality was the heaviest thing ever made by 1971. Obviously Zep and Purple and Venom and Maiden have their own important place in metal history, but Sabbath are the masters.

As times change, so do perceptions.

I think if this poll was done back in the 1980s, Led Zeppelin would have ranked over Black Sabbath, and Iron Maiden probably wouldn't have made top three.

There are some interesting comments in this thread. I would agree that Venom, while not the most technical, could qualify as one of the most
influential (and therefore most important) metal bands of all time, particularly when you look at the extreme metal that has evolved, like Black and Death - they even influenced Thrash (they were part of the NWOBHM after all). Bathory and Mayhem both did covers of Venom on their first albums in the 1980s.

I'm not sure Iron Maiden could be solely credited as influencing Power metal, I think even Judas Priest and probably even Rainbow (refer to the 'Rising' album) were just as influential. Iron Maiden started out as almost a carbon copy of Judas Priest.

Someone mentioned the Rolling Stones but this is a 'hard rock' list, otherwise the Beatles would be on top.

And someone mentioned Ozzy Osbourne's voice as totally unique - I suggest you look into a 1990s Swedish Doom metal band called Count Raven.

There is an excellent quote in the film SLC Punk. Stevo says "I don't care who started punk. Who gives a F**k? It's music!"

Iron Maiden may not have re-invented the wheel but they deserve their legendary status. Those guys worked their asses off writing records and constantly touring.

To this day they perform better live than most bands I've heard. I don't care if they didn't start metal.

Sabbath had some great rockin' stoner tunes with Ozzy and DIO, and some excellently crafted albums with Tony Martin, yes. But when it comes down to it, you can't find anything in the Sabbath canon to me that compares with the likes of Piece of Mind and POWERSLAVE, from MAIDEN. Throw in Somewhere In Time for an added kick in the pants and you've got one bonafide #1 band from England, the band IRON MAIDEN. That is all.

is the most influential metal band of all times , Iron Maiden (1982-1988 period) is the best metal band of all times .
Venom...lol ,venom are a joke and have always been and didn't influence anything. Hell early Bathory had a lot more to do with real black metal (not a harder version of Motorhead which is what venom were) and strictly musical early Celtic Frost (a really influential band in general, even though they never found mainstream success) riffs are the roots of both black metal and death metal .

These guys were influential to so many different bands...even bands like Depeche Mode will tell you that Sabbath was an influence on them musically and other bands like them that had nothing to do with hard rock/ heavy metal... But other than the obvious fact Sabbath should be number 1 here, why the hell isn't Judas Priest number 2 or 3? I'm sorry but Priest was more important to metal than Maiden and I dont think any1 can argue that without Priest there wouldn't have been Maiden anyway... Oh and Zeppelin may have had something to do with metal, but they are not a metal band... a great portion of their material didnt sound anything like hard rock anyway

But if go for influential, then it is definitely Judas Priest over Iron Maiden. Hell, Iron Maiden use the same basic template for a metal band, guitar style, songwriting, that Priest had in place for years before Maiden was even formed.

Also, it was no coincidence that Paul Di'Anno was canned and Bruce Dickinson hired by Maiden AFTER they opened for Priest on their first US tour. They went for a Halford clone, which definitely worked out for them.
