SOIL Singer Defends Band's Decision To Launch Fundraising Campaign For New Album - Nov. 18, 2012
SOIL singer Ryan McCombs has defended the band's decision to launch an interactive pre-sale campaign on Kickstarter to enable fans to participate in the release of the band's forthcoming album. Fans will receive exclusive shirts, a chance to have dinner with the band, autographed merchandise, attend studio sessions, an exclusive new MP3 download of the first studio song with McCombs since 2004's "Redefine" album and more. They also will be the first to receive the new album when it's released.

After a SOIL fan posted a message on the band's Facebook page calling the musicians "cheap motherfuckers" and telling them to "use [their] own money to record [their] music and not ask the fans like him, who have " always paid top price" for their CDs, McCombs responded in the following way: "I hope that, before assuming we were asking for handouts, you went to the Kickstarter site where you can see that we are actually offering opportunities to people to do things and recieve things they normally wouldn't. And, in fact, the most basic package is only asking you to pay for the CD beforehand, allowing the money to go to making an pushing the hell out of this CD the right way instead of lining a disk jockeys' pockets.

"Please understand if we had the money that our music has made others over the years instead of being on the bottom of the food chain within the business we've been in, we would gladly fund it. Without question. The industry is a mess.

"Here is one of many simple facts that would leave you scratching your head: I personally have NEVER recieved a dime for the sales of any CD I have been a part of. The contracts you sign are set up to make that so. But you sign it 'cause if you don't, there are a million bands that will.

"I am sure that the music I have been a part of has bought plenty of cars and made plenty of house payments for many managers and the types over the years.

"Because your CD is on the same shelf as METALLICA's doesn't mean you're making METALLICA money.

"The industry is fucked. For every METALLICA, there are hundreds of bands such as ourselves counting on the shows we play to pay the monthly bills at home.

"I didn't like this option, but it is a possible answer that allows a band to control their fate, and again, offers special things to the fans that allow us to do what we do. I'm sorry this pisses you off so much, as I realize you don't know the financial facts of most bands in the industry. What we are doing here is risking taking the unpaved road in hopes of finding a way for bands like ourselves to survive. The paved road has led to the utter destruction of so many bands that deserved so much more. If taking the unpaved road leads to success, then perhaps it opens the door for others to follow and survive as well."

"For a band that is signed to a label, they HAVE to sell CDs. Do they get royally screwed? HELL YES!!! But if they do not sell enough CDs to be viewed as worthwhile by the label, they will get dropped.

"I had a conversation with a teenage fan once that just couldn't see what was wrong with illegally downloading a CD. Until, that is, I asked him what his Dad did for a living. He happened to be an auto worker. I then asked him, 'What if tomorrow EVERYONE in the world could come to your Dad's auto plant and drive off with any car they wanted, free of charge? How long will your Dad have a job if the product he creates doesn't make the owner of the company money?' It took a quick second but the light came on and he got it.

"If a band you like is employed by a label, buying the CD is absolutely supporting them... It's buying that product that they create.

"If I meet a band on the road and I like the people in the band, I go out and buy the CD. If friends within the industry release a new CD, I go buy the CD. It keeps them being able to do what they do, employment-wise. They aren't making shit off of it, but their boss is and that will keep them employed.

"What is happening more and more frequently is that even if a band can stay employed, eventually they, or members of the band, will reach a point that their cut isn't taking care of the bills at home and they have to choose between family/obligation and a dream that has ended up being very different then the one they had as an aspiring musician.

"We have survived as long as we have because of the support that people like yourself have given us for 12 years. I could never thank people enough for that. But because of the state of things in the industry through those years, we are where we are but we're not ready to fold our cards yet. There needs to be change.

"Like I stated before, this path is unpaved and a bit scary, but we have made a lot of connections over the years and we know a lot about the steps needed to hopefully be successful in this venture. If we are, perhaps we will give an alternative method to those kick-ass bands that fall though the cracks year after year after year.

"Hopefully you went and looked at the Kickstarter site and saw that we aren't asking for handouts. I couldn't be a part of that. We are simply offering the CD and packages to anyone interested. People like you that have always went out and bought that CD to help that band. We're just actually using that help to make the CD and not buy an executive's new car. We are trying to raise the funding for the recording and mixing of the CD. Anything else from the Kickstarter above and beyond will go towards helping out with the marketing, radio, publicity, etc. It's going to be tough, but for once in our careers, we'll be calling the shots, making the calls. I, too, have paid for many, many demos in my day.. but there is a large budget difference between a demo or shopping quality CD and the type you have to have for a chance at radio, movies, TV, etc. I know those are outlets that by us being allowed to be us musically may not have wide open doors to us, but I also think people are a little tired of the cookie cutter.

"We ran through a door in Chicago that DISTURBED kicked open years ago.. No ego here,.. it's the truth. If another door isn't kicked open soon, the rock/metal genre is going to be the way of the dinosaur."

SOIL will hit the road with FOZZY on a nine-date U.K. tour launching November 27 in Stoke, England and wrapping up December 6 in Brighton, England. The trek marks both bands' first return to the United Kingdom since highly successful appearances at this year's Download festival. The tour will also feature the U.K.'s own BREED 77.

SOIL released its first-ever DVD, entitled "Re-LIVE-Ing The Scars", on May 8 via Bieler Bros. Records. The two-disc set, which was recorded live on October 14, 2011 at Electric Ballroom in London, England, contains an audio CD version of the same concert. Also included is over one hour of backstage and behind-the-scenes bonus footage and photos.

SOIL's recording lineup for "Re-LIVE-Ing The Scars" consisted of founding members Ryan McCombs (vocals; ex-DROWNING POOL), Tim King (bass) and Adam Zadel (guitar) alongside former STAIND drummer Jon Wysocki.

If you can't make a living doing "what you love," don't go asking for handouts so that someone else can help you live your dream. Suck it up and find another way of paying the bills.

It is a privilege to play music, and the fact that some people can make money at it doesn't mean every douche on the block should be able to. Not making any money? Simple solution. Get a different job that does pay the bills.

enjoy a Deep Dish Pizza with Soil in Chicago. I would have laughed hysterically at this is it was a regular pizza, but because it is "Deep Dish" that seems like really good value for money!

What a fucking joke.

It's going to be hard for some people when their favorite bands start doing the same thing.

Why shouldn't the band reach out to it's fans this way. McCombs is right.

Donate $15 and you get the album 2 weeks before street date. That's not a handout, that's a pre-order.

of the part on the roadrunner "all-stars session" when johnny kelly from type o negative said that he would rather be swinging a drum stick than a hammer. Well so would I, but when swinging the drum sticks doesn't pay the bills, than I would suggest swinging the hammer. And no I wasn't a fan of the whole all-star cd/dvd, I just happen to remember that part, because I happen to play the drums and I'm a carpenter. Anybody who shells out their money for a cd that isn't even a for sure thing is a fool to put it nicely!!

It's a pledge. If they don't make the goal, they don't get the money. There's a small risk, of course, but running off with the money would pretty much kill off fan trust and ruin their career.

And stop with the hand out BS. You get something in return for your money.

STEALING MUSIC WILL NEVER END PERIOD. PEOPLE ARE GOING TO TAKE (STEAL), ANYTHING THEY CAN JUST TO SAVE THEIR OWN MONEY. WHO CARES IF A BAND DOES THIS TO EARN A LIVING, CALLED A 'JOB'. THE AVERAGE MUSIC FAN COULD CARE LESS, AND WILL STEAL THEIR MUSIC EVERY CHANCE THEY GET. LET'S FACE FACTS HERE, 90% OF THE POPULATION STEALS MUSIC. SO, I GIVE THE MUSIC INDUSTRY LESS THAN A DECADE AND....?

Some of the best bands wouldn't have made it if they had been as chickenshit as you propose. If musicians do what they love that's cool, no matter if I like what they do. And people who listen to music but at the same time say musicians should get proper jobs instead of paying someone else's bills just make me mad.

The industry is fucked, music is not. The solution is simple. Musicians nowadays need to be self sufficient. You don't need a label anymore. Times are changing, whether you like it or not, Ryan.

Anyone who's knocking Soil's Kickstarter campaign is clearly not up with the times.

Because of illegal downloading, record companies are no longer willing to invest heavily into a modestly successful act to make an album that isn't guaranteed a sure return.

Programs like Kickstarter and Pledge have been around for a while now, and are aimed at allowing bands to generate enough funds to make an album and maintain their careers.

The premise is simple. Fans pre-order the album, and the money they give the band goes towards the recording costs towards making that album. Record companies used to once foot the bill, but now it's the fans that directly help acts realise their dream of making a new album.

It's hardly a new venture (Progressive rock outfit Marillion pretty much pioneered this kind of fan friendly project years ago, and bands like Ginger (Of The Wildhearts, Breed 77 and Spock's Beard are just some names that come to mind who have done similar things), and one that's most likely to get more popular as time goes on.

Anyone who doesn't understand how this business model works or how it helps keep a band alive clearly have no understanding of just how record companies work, and what little there is left of them out there is out there these days.

I don't see a problem with crowd funding if they follow through with the rewards and satisfy the demands of pledgers. And while I was originally on the fence when this method started becoming popular, I now see it as a model that has the potential to redefine the music industry. It can very well combat the losses that occur as a result of "cheap" fans illegally downloading and provide more of an incentive to release quality music.

Of course, there is still the potential risk that artists won't follow through with their promises. One instance of this was a Kickstarter campaign started by Deakin of the indie band Animal Collective who raised money for a trip to Africa to perform and a solo album with various rewards for pledgers. He did go to Africa, but three years later he failed to deliver an album and the various rewards he promised, pissing off a bunch of fans. If their was any way for fund raisers to enter some form of a legal contract then Kickstarter would be very practical.

Ok, I'm all for Kickstarter and Pledge Music. I'm happy to support a band I like and get something special in return. But this fucking asshole is lying through his teeth. $15 gets you a fucking download. $30 gets you an actual CD. And if you want it signed that will be $75. Those prices are beyond insane! He's asking their fans to kick in the dough ahead of time and charging them two or three times what those things would normally cost. Way to fuck your fans dickhead!!!

He's still trying to ride the wave of every fucking band with long hair getting signed and trying to live off it.....regardless of if it's deserved or not. Since he's asking for money to fund it.....I'm guessing it's not deserved. If you can't make a living off of making music....make a living off of something else....and don't count of the music to pay your bills. THAT'S REALITY DUMBASS.

That is a complex debate. I like the idea of band funding themselves in various ways. At this point it's more a debate about what you get in return or not. I'm pretty sure there's a crazy fan somewhere willing to shell 600$ to have pizza with a favorite band. I don't see anything wrong with that. I could be an awkward dinner though, but hey...

I agree a bunch of commenters above. But overall, I think artists need to as self-sufficient as possible and go take the DIY road as much as possible. For some stuff it's not possible, obviously. It all depends of the artist's ambitions.

I make music too, but it's a hobby, I like it that way. I work for a living and play music for fun.

All these people saying "get a real job" obviously dont have a dream of there own they are willing to starve or suffer for. While I admit setting individual levels of pledges may be a bit douchy, if their fans want to help them out then thats their choice, not yours. Get over yourselves.

It is different now. I'm sure for some profit towards music sales will be available through media outlets. Mainly for like bonus and collectable merch. But really it's the digital age of music. So many artists just release their music on youtube, or use DAWs to record and give you an option to donate. It is hard and see both sides to this story, but what can you do.

I checked out the Soil Kickstarter campaign, and EVERY pledge offer is a rip off and fans should be insulted. Let's break it donw:

Pledge 1: 1 download for $5. Am I missing something here?
Pledge 2: $15 for download copy of album which equates to $15 profit.
Pledge 3: $30 for both physical and digital copies of album. Profit = $29.00
Pledge 4: $45 for autographed pic, digital download of album, and new song download. Profit = $44

and the pledges just get more and more disturbig and insulting as they go on.

Here's the last one...which may be the most absurd:

Pledge $10,000 or more for an acoustic set (anywhere outside of US) and digital download of a new song. Pledger must pay all travel expenses.

Buy your own International flights you dirtbags!!

Preying on your fans, shame on you!! What a disgrace this is!!

Killuall, you seem outraged at the idea of a band making a profit on anything.

While the acoustic set thing sounds like BS, I agree, you'll probably find most of the so called 'profits' going to fund their album. So I'm not sure how much 'profit' that actually is.

a band using Kickstarter, and it's sad that a band has to defend using it to seek funding from other routes aside from labels and day jobs. Unless you are like Metallica or something, bands make next to nothing off their music.

I wonder if Soil used public tv and radio fund drives as inspiration for theirs, because everything is ridiculously overpriced. If I was a fan and saw this campaign, I probably wouldn't contribute. $15 for the digital album and $30 for the CD (among other things)? That's way too much. $10 for the digital album and $20 for the CD (with free shipping) would be much more reasonable.
