MEGADETH Drummer On Upcoming Album, MUSTAINE's OBAMA Comments And Touring With METALLICA - Nov. 15, 2012
Robert DiGiacomo of Atlantic City Insiders recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH drummer Shawn Drover. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

On performing the "Countdown To Extinction" album in its entirety on the current tour:

Drover: "As a fan of MEGADETH, this is one of my favorite records. It's such a cohesive record. It's very solid and to the point — it's a lot of fun to play those songs."

"It's been a lot of fun going back and getting reacquainted with songs I haven't heard in a while."

On MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine's unwillingness to perform the song "The Conjuring" live because it no longer jives with his status as a born-again Christian:

Drover: "The subject matter lyrically is very dark, and he's not comfortable singing it. Ironically, it's one of my favorite tracks. You have to respect that if someone's not comfortable with that. Pretty much everything out of our catalog, we can pull out and play."

On whether he shares Mustaine's outspoken political views, including belief that President Barack Obama was not born in the U.S.:

Drover: "He doesn't speak for the band."

On the progress of the recording sessions for MEGADETH's follow-up to 2011's "TH1RT3EN":

Drover: "If a record comes out in the summer of 2013, it will be a little more than two years. We don't want to wait too long. We try to keep it cranked up pretty good, in terms of releasing new material.

"There are all kinds of ideas bouncing around. We're in the midst of listening to what we have and seeing which riffs and songs to put together. We don't go in with any preconceived notions of how a song is going to sound. We just want to create the best material we can and hope fans love it as much as we do. If you go in with preconceived notions, it's not organic. We never try to copy anything we've done in the past."

On taking part in the worldwide "Big Four" tour with SLAYER, ANTHRAX and METALLICA in 2010 and 2011:

Drover: "The camaraderie was fantastic. We're friends with those guys now. Certainly, with the Big Four, there was a celebration of the bands coming together. The reaction was amazing. The whole vibe was a positive vibe. I would love to do it again. Whether that happens again remains to be seen. Anything is possible at any given time."

you must be one of those idiots who hates megadeth just because you dont share daves opinions and beliefs... i am a huge megadeth fan, and i myself dont agree with most of the shit dave has said, but im not gonna be a butthurt fuckhead and decide to not listen to megadeths music anymore, i mean for fucks sake its not like we have to put up with him on a personal level

I don't know how you managed to derive that from my comment. I never said that Megadeth were shit or that I wouldn't listen to them anymore. Not that it matters, but Megadeth happen to be one of my favourite bands. I've seen them live 5 times in the past 6 years. I wouldn't quit listening to a band because I didn't agree with a member, not would I listen to a band simply because their views were similar to mine. But none of that changes the fact that Dave is a megalomaniacal deluded nutbag. Also, learn grammar.

I have to say, when I read your comment, and then the response I was really confused. How he derived that from your comment, I do not know either. That was really weird.

Mustaine has and always have my respect why because he speaks his mind and doesn't hold back. Those sheeple that are blinded by obummer's charm and empty promises he is going to bankrupt this country in the next four years.

He's always seemed like a good dude. I'm curious to know the real story of why his brother left. Glen did a great job of recreating Marty's solos while he was with the band.

He won"t sing a song because he has "changed"? So all his lyrics are a direct representation of him solely, not a third person view or a story or concept? He should comb through all his songs then, not a retrospect of where he was at that point years ago. He is the biggest fraud. Politically then he should go mute for his dumb statements he continues to make. Just retire and live off royalties and sit in a church and pray until you flip flop that. He's the Danny Bonaduce of metal.

Well that song specifically is a pretty evil incantaion witchcraft type hex. Honestly I love the song but as someone who shares his beliefs (religion wise) I get why he has decided not to play it.

I disagree so strongly with his paranoid rants on foreign soil that I can't enjoy the music like I used to. For the record, I didn't like it when Natalie Maines did it either.

"We now get along with those guys so well." Ummm...last time I checked it was Dave and Dave only that was booted out of MetallicA. They (James, Lars & Kirk) have no reason to resent any of the recent members of Megadeth, nor Dave, since they went on to become one of the biggest musical acts in the history of music.

Yep, some of his political views and comments haven't sat well with me at all, and he does have a tendency to put his foot in it with alarming regularity, but the fact Shawn feels able to publicly state that he doesn't necessarily agree with Dave's views, means that he can't be that bad. The Dave Mustaine of 20-25 years ago would probably have kicked Shawn out of the band for not agreeing with him about such matters. If Shawn can be in a band with him, despite not agreeing with him on political matters, then why do fans take it as such an affront when they don't agree with Dave on those matters?

If I had to only like bands where I agreed with the band members' views on life, politics, etc... I'd probably listen to far less bands than I do now. I still love Megadeth's music, and always will, no matter how much I disagree with Dave's stance on certain things. I totally believe in free speech, and Dave has every right to say whatever he likes. It doesn't effect his status as a songwriter or a guitarist, so why should it bother me, or anyone else for that matter?

Let's face it, Dave has ALWAYS been a bit of an asshole, which is why he was booted from Metallica, and couldn't hold any lineup of the band together for very long, but he makes great metal music, and to me, that is the main thing and all that really matters.

Oh, and I'm with Shawn, The Conjuring is an awesome song! It's such a shame that Dave won't play that song again. They probably don't play Go To Hell live either for the same reason, which sucks, cos I love that song too! :(

I love Megadeth. Although Dave is an intelligent guy and heck of a guitar player, he says some ridiculous things at times. Oh well, he's a character, I can live with is eccentricities.

Oh and sorry to say, but 13 was a disappointment. Endgame was a much more solid record.

Works in his favor when the "Risk" performed in full live! come around.

You'll get bonus, "The Conjuring" performed in full several times. Doesn't matter. No will know what the fuck he is whining about in the microphone by then.

I don't see Megadeth as a democracy at all. I give this dude a year before Dave makes up some shit for the comment and boots em sadly.

Sorry, but Dave is entitled to his beliefs and his opinions, but why would I support someone who promotes horseshit I have no respect for? If you want to pay the guy to listen to his Jesus and New World Order horseshit, more power to you. I was done after his asinine Occupier comments, but after his 'joking' about the mass shootings, I wouldn't piss on this asshole if he were on fire.

It's ironic about Dave and Metallica. Sure, he got the boot, but if you look at it, he has a phenomenal catalog of music and has made plenty of money, uh, **playing music**. To me, I think Dave achieved *more* on his own and if he looks back, it may not be reconciled about getting the boot, but Megadeth shows his talent and ability. I would say it was a blessing in disguise...through something bad came something better than he would have achieved as being just a member of Metallica. Maybe less money, but more than enough money and the freedom to write and play more complicated music. Frankly, the guitar work in MEgadeth is a cut above that in MEtallica if you ask me.

Who cares about Dave's politics...thos are his views, not his music.
