MIKE PORTNOY: 'Music And Relationships And Inspiration Are Way More Important To Me Than Money' - Nov. 15, 2012
Drum! magazine recently conducted an interview with drummer Mike Portnoy (ADRENALINE MOB, FLYING COLORS, DREAM THEATER, AVENGED SEVENFOLD). A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

On the differences between DREAM THEATER and his current projects FLYING COLORS, a quasi-prog/pop-rock super group, and the more hard rock-oriented ADRENALINE MOB:

Portnoy: "Nothing went through the DREAM THEATER system without going through me first. But I don't think anything I am doing now is like that at all. I am definitely enjoying different roles and lesser weight in everything that's going on. These guys are all used to having full control in their respective careers and bands. So when we come together in FLYING COLORS, it's all about collaboration and compromise and working together. It's a very, very different kind of chemistry than what I had at DREAM THEATER, and I could say the same about ADRENALINE MOB as well. They are both very different animals."

"After [playing] with AVENGED [SEVENFOLD in 2010], I realized how much fun I was having, not having to sit there with a calculator to play drums. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I did that for all those years with DREAM THEATER and I loved that too, but, man, my brain just needed a break, and I really enjoyed that vibe with AVENGED. So when I was approached with the music for ADRENALINE MOB, it was the right music at the right time, like, 'I want to do this, man.'"

"['Bounce'] was something that I definitely started to cop with AVENGED SEVENFOLD, and when I did that album and tour I learned about sometimes just laying down four on the floor and having that kick drum kind of going and not always taking a left turn with the drumming. Just laying it down and staying there. And that was something I carried into ADRENALINE MOB."

On his departure from DREAM THEATER:

Portnoy: "I've seen absolutely ridiculous accusations online where people think I left DREAM THEATER to make money with AVENGED SEVENFOLD or to make more money doing more commercial music. That could not be further from the truth. I was very secure with the world I had in DREAM THEATER and I could have just rode that out and been secure probably the rest of my career. But I walked away from that because music and relationships and inspiration are way more important to me than money."

On whether he would ever consider reuniting with the band he founded:

Portnoy: "Well, in the hypothetical scenario you are laying out, I would never step in as a drummer for hire or go on board in any sort of lesser capacity than I ever had in the band. And I never wanted to walk away from the band. That was never my intention or my goal. I just needed a break and hoped that they would share that same feeling and respect that feeling and that we would take a break together. I never, ever wanted the lineup to change or for me to leave the band — that's just the way that the cards played out. So if the opportunity ever arose to come back I would absolutely welcome it, but I am not waiting for it and I am not counting on it. I have a million other things going on in my life that keep me very happy and very busy."

I hope they don't take Portnoy back. Mangini should have to leave first on his own accord first. It would be a real letdown to know DT would fire their drummer to have Portnoy come back.

I really doubt that they would do that. Portnoy already tried to go back but they or their Attorney told him no as they already put in the time to find Mangini and Mangini quit his job at Berkley for the gig. They are very respectful people. I highly doubt they would fire him now if they wouldn't do it then.

Portnoy is fast becoming irrelevant. All these side projects and nothing is sticking. Adrenaline Mob was garbage, now's touring with another x-dream theater member... I mean dude. Just beg for your job back in Dream Theater.

We want you to come home to Dream Theater!!! Please Mike!! It ain't the same without you!!!

Narcissism - thy name is Mike Portnoy.

Doubt DT would take him back. Seems like there is some bad blood there and Mike was kind of a control freak.

dreaming portnoy there is no way you are being invited back Dream Theater after the way you left. who expects a band to say yes to a 5 year break? I thought you wanted some time off but you seem to have played with anybody who has a band since you left. in case you missed it Dream Theater put out a awesome record without you and without all your crying nobody would have noticed you were not them anymore. for somebody supposedly responsible for their sound it sure sounded like Dream Theater to me. as for not doing it for the money it is easy to say that now since you are not making anything with these new projects of yours.

vow how old are people here and what kind of music does a guy listening to if he says Portnoy is talentless haha. then he must listen to green day or nirvana, some lousy punk bands making music that anyone can play. its great that people like Portnoy and most of prog guys are around to make exciting different kind of music then the typical 3 chords 3 minutes songs that anyone with very little talent can make. and its good they are not wasting their talent on that. of course it wont sell as much but like he said he still has it good and its probably more fun as a musician to be able to play almost any song you have made and no one cares in the audience because all the people there are true fans that buy the albums and know every song, not just the 1-2 hit songs and then say the band is great.

hate nothing more then some guy comes and says some bands are great and then just plays 1-2 songs and thats it.

and he's making music with very talentend guys and i bet he's very happy about but im also sure he has some regret about Dream Theater.

not everyone can write decent simple riffs using 3 chords

you could just as easily say "anyone with years of training can do OTT fills"

whether you use 3 chords or shred the fuck out of your instrument, it doesn't count for anything unless you can WRITE

people like steve vai and portnoy are just as bad as hacks like green day... what they have in common is they are caught up with trying to impress people rather than actually play decent music

I dig Portnoy, but that's someone with a lot of money talking.

Having a lot of money gives you the freedom of not having to think about money.

Well said from someone who has plenty of money and wants to be relevant in hi business after the DT flop. You did not feel the same when you had the drumkit incident in Asia. You thought about YOU (like always) and what did the others do despite the technical problems? Nothing, just pure class, unlike you. Way to go to give us more reasons to bash you.

And with Flying Colors it does. Great album, probably one of my favourite records this year along with "Nine" by Circus Maximus. Prog CAN also be great tunes.

Try this. Put Mikey's statements / interviews in chronological order, read them in order, and you will agree with my diagnosis.

Either that or he is just a liar who regrets his crybaby actions.

Well, hippie words are beautiful in theory but most of us must adapt to reality. Music, relationships and inspiration don't pay the bills, money does. Only musicians who treat their art as a business will become successful in real life in case their careers end up in the drain which it will for most. The audience is rarely loyal in the long run.

of course everyone wants to make some money, especialy after you have family, but its possible to make good music and music you want to make and not selling out and just make simple pop/rock songs or whatever supposed to be popular at any given time. i bet Portnoy has it fine but he could also just start being some session guy for Rhianna or britney spears or whatever butthankfully it doesn't do that.
but still Nuno bettencourt plays for Rhianna and he's one of the most talented guitarists alive but still he makes his own music too and gets to show off while playing for her live, but still i would rather he made some more music by himslef but maybe this Rhinna gig gets him some money so he can make some different kind of music and music that he realy likes.

and there are thankfully enough bands out there just making there own great music even though they arent selling millions, and that are most metal bands, prog bands and even rock bands today.
but Metallica is a good example, they didnt start to sell milliion albums until they started making simpler music.
