JASON BONHAM Says BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION Should Tour With Session Guitarist - Nov. 15, 2012
Jeb Wright of Classic Rock Revisited recently conducted an interview with drummer Jason Bonham (LED ZEPPELIN, BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION, JASON BONHAM'S LED ZEPPELIN EXPERIENCE). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Classic Rock Revisited: I think as we get older and we realize the importance of music and art that is LED ZEPPELIN then we respect it more. The legacy must be even more important to you now than it ever was.

Jason: To me, when that kind of thing came, I wasn't that easily persuaded to do the LED ZEPPELIN EXPERIENCE. All of my demands were met concerning how I wanted to do it, so that I could make sure that it was done right. We didn't know whether it would be accepted. Once we did our opening night then I never looked back. The band plays great and it really feels great to be doing this. We have the most fantastic band in the world. We are not trying to copy, but we are trying to give that same urgency that they had. If I can make the audience close their eyes and go back to a great time in their life, then I've done my job.

Classic Rock Revisited: For many years, you didn't embrace ZEPPELIN. What has this project taught you about yourself as a person and a musician?

Jason: I always accepted my dad and his music. There was always this fight where I wanted to exist too. I am always compared to the greatest, and I get it, but I don't think everyone else gets it. One person who went to see "Celebration Day" wrote this wonderful piece that brought tears to my eyes. This guy understood what was in my mind. Let's face it, to be in that seat, the seat of the possibly the greatest rock drummer of all time, when the entire world is watching to see if you are going to fuck up… it is intense. Everyone was looking for me to fail. This guy realized that and then complimented me on the way that I played and how I handled the pressures. It was a special night. For many years, I had problems with booze and drugs and I was trying to replicate the other John. And that was the wrong one to replicate. I realized that the good one was the drumming guy.

Classic Rock Revisited: Have you accepted that BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION is not going to do a tour?

Jason: I have not suggested this to the others, but my thing would be that we should, for the fans, go out and play — me, Glenn [Hughes] and Derek [Sherinian]. We should just go tour it. We could get Joe [Bonamassa] to recommend a guitar player to go out with us, that way he is still involved. If he can't do it, then at least can we do it and he can recommend somebody. I would love to be able to take this out on the road. We'll see. If Joe can't do it, then we should go out with someone else. Joe is a really nice guy and I think if we asked him, then he would say, "Of course."

Classic Rock Revisited: I talked to Glenn and he told me that he loves you but he said that you are such an emotional person and that you cry more than anyone he has ever met.

Jason: I think that may be true. However, Glenn may not cry more than anyone else, but Glenn moans more than anyone I have ever met.

This guy is one of the greatest there is in the business and he still cannot get himself in a band that is recognized. I don't know if its bad decision making or simply bad luck. I love BCC but I don't think its the right vehicle for Jason. He needs to be in a dedicated and recognized band. He deserves to be right up there w his father in terms of greatness. That performance in 07 proves it. Outstanding player and seems like a great guy.

I agree, I love BCC, I think the band is phenomenal, I hope they tour with a session guitarist, it would be great to see them with Joe, but I think it is a total injustice to the rest of the band to just sit around while he is out touring on his own, kinda sucks, Joe is a great guitar player, but I'd be going to see Jason and Mr. Glen Hughes!

where Joe B. would rather do solo shows. More cash in his pocket. BCC needs to get someone to take his place just like Chickenfoot does with Chad Smith. The music needs to be heard by the masses.

but isn't the point, and part of the reason you like them so much because of Joe B's playing? Its a HUGE part of that band. I so against replacing key players in bands, then its NOT that band anymore, is it? the whole point of this band was to get together this sort of Supergroup.

get Jimmy Page, change the name of the band and make a new album and tour the hell out of it. Hell they could even get John Paul Jones to play bass or whatever the hell he wanted. I'd pay money to see and hear that!!!!

Totally should get a session guy to fill in. I don't see why it wouldn't/shouldn't happen. Don't get me wrong Joe is fucking incredible - but with all the connections that these guys all have, I cannot believe their isnt someone that could be passable in his place. Bring on the fill-in and the tour!!!!

...that should have been the plan from the start. Even Glen Hughes admitted he knew that going in, Joes solo career came first.
Now they act like he fucked them. No,you fucked yourselves by not having a plan.
Dont get me wrong, Joes great, but its not like the session guy(or certainly Kotzen) couldnt play what was on the disc.Ritchie Kotzen would add another dimension to these guys, I was blown away when I checked him out. 2013 could be his year.

I've seen Joe B live - he's good, but come on. 100 guys out there could take the spot in BCC and it would be just fine.

Regarding Jason - he's a monster drummer alright. Killer groove.

Joe is selling out 5000 seaters for $75 a ticket. If BCC came it would be $25 bucks and 500 people there tops. I get it.

In the long run it would be better for Joe to take the loss and do the tour because the long term would generate more fans and that leads to more money. Hit the major markets and blow the roof off.

Long term business plan my friend.

Jason Bonham could learn a thing or 2 about loyalty from his old man's band.

"Bring in a session guy for Joe Bonamasa"... fool.

Jason sat for in for his father in a band that knows all about loyalty ... A band that could make BILLIONS by reforming and they don't do it because one of them is not there to play....

Get it Jason...? Loyalty is everything. You and that crybaby prima donna Glenn Hughes are going to ruin a great band.

why?????

They knew he had a solo career when they formed the fucking band.... They all have their own projects they jump in and out of.... So why are they putting Bonamasa's feet to the fire..

I'm wide awake...

You know what band Bonham should get back together and tour?

Steel Dragon

Bonham, Pilson on Bass, Zakk on guitar, heck, get Lynch or Richie Kotzen on the other guitar and Jeff Scott Soto singing lead. That's a band I'd go see for sure.

Kotzen is a good guitarist but softer than this band needs. Blackmore is not in the genre anymore. Id love Jimmy Page but i doubt thats happening. Honestly, the riffs arent so hard. Any solid slinger could pull off a touring gig.

Shoot, for that matter, i say get John Sykes and get movin.

Bonham and Hughes loooove to put Bonamassa on the hotseat and try to push him into touring when they know damn well Joe's solo touring animalistic schedule.

This is just going to push the band apart. I hate to see it happen, but how long before Joe says enough?
They can go get a touring guitarist to fill in, but nobody is going to sing Joe's parts like Joe. Sorry, not gonna happen.

Also, Afterglow is not near as good as the first two.

fully agree w/ Jason.
love Joe of course, but logic is logic. Take BCC out w/ a different guitarist if Joe can't or doesn't want to.
Otherwise the power and magic of these 3 amazing albums will slowly die.

damn i love this band.

i agree that as big a fan base as they have earned they deserve to tour. i also agree, though, that even though there are better guitar players out there than joe, there's no one who's guitar playing has the same character as his. any session player that gets out there really needs to sound like him, not just play his parts. while joe is still part of BCC, i want BCC to sound like the guitars to sound the way they did on the albums, and i don't see why any big name guys like kotzen or even decent session players would want to change their feel and sound of their guitar playing to sound like joe.

if they're gonna tour without him and have the sound be completely different (and you guitar players know i'm right) i want it to be b/c the band has a new guitarist. i can live with a different feel to old material if a new band member brings in a different sound, but not when another player is playing joe's parts differently until joe comes in and plays them right again.
