ZAKK WYLDE: 'Without RANDY RHOADS, There Never Would Have Been A ZAKK WYLDE' - Nov. 8, 2012
Rock Cellar Magazine recently conducted an interview with Zakk Wylde (BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, OZZY OSBOURNE). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Rock Cellar Magazine: Did you feel welcomed into the heavy metal family when you first joined Ozzy's band in 1987?

Zakk: Oh, totally, and still do today. Even those very first shows, everyone was rooting for me because they knew I was on the team, and loved Randy Rhoads as much as they did. They could see I played Randy's stuff exactly his way, and had the highest respect for what he did. There's no way you can fill his shoes, so you just have to give respect to his music and play it accurately. You have to, because this is the house that Rhoads built. And without Randy Rhoads, there never would have been a Zakk Wylde.

Rock Cellar Magazine: What influence did Randy's playing have on you, having played his songs countless times around the globe for over 20 years?

Zakk: One of the biggest things I learned from him is construction, and where you can go with a solo by playing Randy's music. He was a brilliant soloist who had such a melodic sense — there'd be a beginning, middle and end, as he could tell a whole story in a song. He had "feel," which is something only the greats have, you know what I mean? When I listen to Randy, I feel every single note as his solos are like gold. It doesn't matter how many times you listen to Randy's music, you're waiting for those incredible moments that were all part of his tremendous arsenal. The testimony to Randy's greatness is the fact that we still all remember him, and see his image on magazine covers, in books, and posters everywhere. He's a legend for what he accomplished on those first two Ozzy records, and I've always considered it the highest honor performing Randy's music all those years playing live with the boss.

Rock Cellar Magazine: 30 years later, Ozzy's set-list still includes so many songs from the Randy Rhoads era, like "Goodbye To Romance", "Believer" and "Mr. Crowley".

Zakk: Dude, I have to tell you a funny story. A while back, Ozzy comes into my studio and he sees these posters on the wall. He looks at the LED ZEPPELIN one and starts telling me some stories about John Bonham and how they would get fucked up together in the bars. Then he looks up at this poster I have on the wall of Aleister Crowley, and he goes, "Zakk [assuming Ozzy's voice], who's the fucking bald-headed cunt on the wall?" And I'm just fucking cracking up. So Ozzy says, "What the fuck's so funny?" And I said, "Dude, you don't know who that is?" Ozzy goes, "Why the fuck should I know who he is? Who the fuck is it?" So I said, "Ozzy, you've only been singing about him for the last 30 fucking years! It's Aleister Crowley, bro!" There's a pause, then Ozzy says, "Oh, is that what he looks like?" I kid you not, brother.

Rock Cellar Magazine: As a huge BLACK SABBATH fan, how do feel about Ozzy, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler working on a new album?

Zakk: Put it this way — if anybody's going to be working on the new SABBATH record, it couldn't be in better hands than [producer] Rick Rubin. Father Rubin is a massive SABBATH fan as well, and if anything Rick is going to make sure it turns out to be an awesome SABBATH record. Especially, if this is going to be their last one — their swan song. Rick's going to want to have a feather in his cap, looking back on this one and say, "Yeah, I helped work on that last SABBATH record." So without a doubt, bro, it's going to be killer. More SABBATH just makes life a bit better, I always say. The more SABBATH we can get in our lives, the better off we'll all be.

It's lame to make Randy responsible for this complete hack of a guitar player.

*goes back in time and makes Randy's plane crash*

THERE! Now we'll never have to endure a million pinch harmonics per minute (MPHPM).

Wait... ah fuck. I was too late.

yeah, and Roky Erickson's was secure with the 13th Floor Elevators, and Syd Barrett's was with Pink Floyd. If Ozzy's solo career flopped, we'd be watching a documentary now about how Ozzy is sitting at his staring window with drool cup in hand wondering where he is and how he got there. His career and life was at a turning point when Randy entered his life. Without Randy, Ozzy could have long since disappeared.

Why the hate? While im not familiar with BLS too much and sure there are some gems on Zaaks end, overall his playing is overrated and splashed all over magazines and advertisments to the point of nauseum. There are plenty of guitarists that dont get the acclaim that we feel are better.

I won't give examples like the shredders with the names Jeff Loomis or Alex Laiho, that'd be too predictable to give like anyone on here. I will say as far as "bluesier" but "shred" style players, John Christ and John Sykes are the first two who come to mind. John Christ was the one who introduced me to pinch harmonics, and I always though No Rest for the Wicked and No More Tears (though there are some great songs) are cheesy and commercial. I prefer Jake E Lee..sorry. And live Zaak was sloppy as fuck when I saw him at Ozzfest with BLS

But does a nice job duplicating the solos.

Doesn't do such a great job with the songs on the whole.

Randy would laugh at EMG's and the country blues sound Zakk acquired over the years.

I agree with ridethemaster1991. Zakk's solos on NMT and the Pride & Glory record are awesome. I don''t care for his BLS music or his biker outfit, but the guy can play the shit out of a guitar.

Zakk is the man.. People on BM hate on talent .. lets see dave mustain Zakk and Axel rose are all the worst musicians to walk the planet .. but bill ward is GOD lol.. some people need to get a clue and recognize true talent.. "Zakk sucks"-- fact listen to the no more tears album its perfect . ozzomsis is one of the most original metal albums i have ever heard from the guitar sounds and layering to the songwriting.. no rest for the wicked and black rain are both very good albums also.. as for BLS his last 5 albums are all great.. he is a hack that can play better with one finger than anyone bashing him on this site ..

As a 39 year old guitar player that has played in Metal bands since I was 15 I'm a huge fan of Randy and Zakk! They both provide great instruction and influence to beginners and seasoned players. What blows my mind is you can't read one news article on this site then scroll down to low and behold all the negative hate. Why people actually continue to bash and bash On every Artist that is talked about on Blabbermouth? Thanks to both guitar greats for their contributions to the music industry. The world is a better place for the sounds they have produced throughout their careers!

maybe this is Zakk's problem after all, he wants to be RR too much. Jake E. Lee is a more original and better player than Zakk and he doesn't sound like RR at all... really the underrated guy when it comes to Ozzy's line-ups...

I saw Zakk live at an MSG Ozzy concert about 3 or 4 years ago...
First of all, the whole band was loud but Zakk was like 1 & 1/2 times louder than everyone else. I was deciding whether most of the loudness was coming from the house system or the 10 Marshall stacks behind him - I think I would have to say the 10 stacks that probably all have knobs that goes to 12 let alone 11. His solo consisted of nothing more than 12 to 15 minutes, (or was it an hour? - I lost all sense of time like you would in a UFO encounter) of million mile per hour scales and wailing single notes of course with the obligatory pinched harmonics generously sprinkled throughout. I remember laughing my ass off with my younger nephews (they enjoyed the opening set with Rob Zombie way more - as did I). All I can say is that show was memorable mostly because I didn't get full hearing back for 2 full God damn days.

Oh, then then I pray Santa hack off every shingle until he reaches my room giving me the present of guitar knowledge. Zakk never tried to BE Randy. He didn't go classical or even neo-classical - just played his parts. I can recognize his diverse playing styles even though I'm not into his band. No bag on him bros!

Yeah, I know mentioning Dio on Ozzy news isn't a good thing but... "Strange Highways" was released over 1 year earlier. And ya know, it has similar "originality" than Ozzmosis. So ya know... I have to say that... Dio was more original at that point. ;)

Agree with everything he said here. I don't get all the hate either, but we are on Blabbermouth, so I guess we should expect it. Yes, Zakk is an incredible guitar player; but he's also an amazing song writer. He creates great melodies, whether it be guitar, piano, or his vocals. He's well respected in the metal community, but turds on here will bash like his playing is simplistic and shit.
Fact is, although he's not Randy, he filled his shoes nicely and created timeless music with Ozzy afterwards. "No More Tears" is a fantastic record, and Ozzmosis I even like better because of it's power and heaviness.
He may overuse the pinch harmonics a little too much sometimes, but that's just his style....and it stands out in every song he is a part of. His playing in Jasta's solo's band on the song "Fearless Must Endure" is slapped with his unique style, to the point everyone who's heard Zakk before instantly knows it's him playing. Same goes for Dope's "Addiction", My Darkest Days' "Porn Star Dancing", etc... The majority of guitarists in our generation do not have much of a signature sound anymore, so I'll give the credibility where it's due. But man, do I wish Randy was still with us...I could only imagine his progression throughout the years. He was truly gifted. : (
