MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE Reflects On 'Countdown To Extinction' - Nov. 8, 2012
ARTISTdirect.com editor-in-chief Rick Florino recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

ARTISTdirect.com: What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of "Countdown To Extinction" now?

Mustaine: It was very fun. [laughs] The world was different back then. There were some very peculiar moments like when the curfew happened after the Rodney King riots. Something like that happens once in a person's lifetime, and you have to live through it consistently. Those things are rare.

ARTISTdirect.com: What's your experience like listening to the record now?

Mustaine: Playing it is one thing. Listening to it is another. When I listen to it, I think, "What was I reading then? What were we going through?" Take the chorus of "Symphony Of Destruction". I found a martial arts instructor I liked, and I started training with him. I'd been with him for a while, and one day, I was driving to get lunch. For some reason, I wanted sushi. Maybe I thought I was David Carradine. [laughs] Who knows? You finish karate and go have sushi, right? I wrote on the back of the receipt from the sushi restaurant, "My head explodes. My brain corrodes." That's where it started. The feeling of this record reminds me of how meticulous we were doing it too. When we had the guitars patched into strobe tuners, we'd bend up until where the tuner would stop dead if we were doing any solos with bends in them. It was crazy stuff like that. We were doing it to tape too.

ARTISTdirect.com: That organic nature comes through.

Mustaine: I think so. There's the argument of analog versus digital. Digital definitely has a clarity to it, but there's a plasticness in the sound. I love the sound of tape. If tape had the same kind of post-EQ that digital presents, it would sound just as good. There wasn't that big of a difference when you'd listen to a really well-produced record. People just didn't know how to get stuff to sound really great analog-wise because tape is pretty finicky. Tape sticks together. I remember the first time they told me they had to bake the tapes when we wanted to do something with the old tapes. I thought, "How is that not going to melt? How is something disastrous not going to happen?" [laughs] It's totally real, and they do it all the time though.

I believe this album and the next 3 after it are directly influenced by Lars Ulrich. The System has Failed and Endgame were truly awesome. They were not, at least positively or directly, influenced by Lars Ulrich. Dave, please take note. Can you please leave Lars out of the equation on your next album?

Just write full on metal. Forget all this commercial stuff. It's precisely why Endgame was awesome and why 13 is only just another album.

And you're still sat in your bedroom bitching about someone else's business. I love the music Megadeth made (from Peace Sells to Countdown To Extinction) but I'm no great fan of Mustaine's. Regardless though, the guys accomplishments speak for themselves.

And yours...? Is this your only soapbox to notoriety...?

You pissy little Blabbermouth twat. Grow the fuck up.

I don't know what you people are bitcing about. Dave was always an incredible dick, always behaved like he had a micropenis and needed to compensate. His personality or intelligence were never inspiring and it's not suprising he became a right wing brainwashed tool, empty skull is easy to fill with bullshit. Being butthurt for 30 years about being sacked from a band in which he didn't even play for a whole year is the most pathetic thing ever, and people started bitching only after he went Jeebus/Murrica. He's a solid rhythm player and had more than several memorable riffs, but he's a pathetic singer and sloppy lead player and often mediocre and repeatable as a songwriter, he himself gives his musicianship and influence way too much credit and his fanboys only repeat what he believes about himself.

That sounds almost as paranoid as Dave Mustaine himself.

such is the short sightedness of some of these comments. Dave is entitled to his asshole opinions just as you are so shut the fuck up already. Now on to what this is really about, Countdown is a great album. The riffs are meaty and the soloing is impeccable. It may not have the fire of Peace Sells, Rust or even Endgame but it is a solid album of amazing musicianship and songwriting.

Endgame and Thirteen were pretty heavy good cd's. Unlike some of his unamed contemporaries that have softened up. I do get sick of people talking politics all the time, and not just musicians though.

Megadeth has been at the top if its game for quite a while now, and remains one of the most relevant and consistent voices in metal. No one does it any better.

Glad to see people taking 5 on the Mustaine bashing and focusing on the music.

Having said that, I'm going to ignore my own advice and say something about Dave's political opinions: Yes they are crazy. But they are not hateful like Ted Nugent. Dave cares about poor people, minorities, etc. He is a conspiracy nut, but he cares about people. Nugent is a hateful bastard and they should not be compared.

Wow so there are people actually defending Dave and his political views? You know I have heard about sheep but never thought they actually existed. This is a music forum people! Lets keep it that way! No one wants to read a bunch of political arguing by people that have absolutely no clue what they are talking about. This includes Dave!!!!!

Dave doesn't mention politics once in this interview but all of the readers bring it up. It was actually a good interview and he's really an interesting person when he doesn't go off on a political tangent.

Whoever commented too sterile got it completely right. While the music might be tight and technical, it comes across without passion or soul. I make exception only for the final two tracks, Captive Honor and Ashes In Your Mouth. But even Captive Honor is sullied by the dubious distinction of being the only Megadeth song ever to feature the word "manpussy." Glad that one didn't catch on.

These idiots act like they have to hang out and discuss politics with him. It's a band - they make music. It kicks ass - listen to it. Everything else is meaningless nonsense, just like your own uneducated ill-informed political opinions.

Similarly, I can forgive Mille Petrozza for being a complete leftist whackjob, because the last Kreator album was stunning.

this is an easy quote "i wanted to make one last good album before i started pushing marty friedman outta the band. i mean i cant have a better guitarist than me in the band. so i decided to make the bad decision, push him out, and make 20 years of crap music and bitch about lars"
