MORBID ANGEL Frontman Says PETE SANDOVAL Still Has 'Challenges' To Overcome Following Surgery - Nov. 7, 2012
Greece's Metalpaths recently conducted an interview with vocalist/bassist David Vincent of Florida-based death metal veterans MORBID ANGEL. You can now listen to the chat using the audio player below.

Asked how longtime MORBID ANGEL drummer Pedro "Pete" Sandoval is doing two years after undergoing surgery after a disc prolapse, Vincent said, "You know, he still has some challenges. Obviously it's our hope that he continues to get better, but at this point, Tim Yeung is the drummer of MORBID ANGEL and he's doing an excellent job."

Regarding whether MORBID ANGEL has left the door open for Pete to rejoin the band whenever he feels he can perform at 100 percent again, Vincent said, "Well, we really haven't discussed it because that has not been the case yet."

Interview (audio):

Quality video footage of MORBID ANGEL's November 4 performance at Effenaar in Eindhoven, The Netherlands can be seen below.

In a recent interview with Full Metal Jackie's nationally syndicated radio show, David Vincent stated about MORBID ANGEL's latest album, "Illud Divinium Insanus", "One thing about MORBID ANGEL is that there's never been any rules and it's an interesting perspective. We just kind of go in and do what we do, and sometimes it blossoms; every flower is a different color and a different smell. This album, it surprises people, a couple of tracks on there, and then there's a couple of other tracks that are as MORBID ANGEL as you can get. People are coming around. It was slow going at first — people were going, 'What are these guys doing here?' and night after night, I'm getting comments, people are like, 'I finally really listened to it and I really like it. It just took me a while.' That's no different than some of the other records we've done in the past, so everything is going as planned."

"Illud Divinum Insanus" sold around 3,600 copies in the United States in its first week of release to enter The Billboard 200 chart at position No. 141. The effort marked MORBID ANGEL's first CD to feature Vincent since 1995's "Domination".

Mr. Vincent is a diplomat. In plain words, he said Sandoval is out of the band for good.

The drummer of Morbid Angel?

Apparently no one knows.

Just 5 days ago, Blabbermouth ran the headline "TERRORIZER/Ex-MORBID ANGEL Drummer PETE SANDOVAL: 'My Recovery Is Almost 100%'"

A few other headlines also refer to Sandoval as "Ex-Morbid Angel" and apparently today, he's still a member of the band, but he has to work through his "challenges".

He's active with Terrorizer and making a guest appearance on two Resistant Culture tracks...so, he's drumming.

I think there may be more to the story.

You guys just wanted one of the best metal drumers out of the band. Fuck you Vincent, go join a techno band.

The fact remains Tim is a capable player. Even if you want to analyze the live shit he is spot on. So while so many of you seem infatuated with his pretty hair if you actually listen you might shut the fuck up for a change.

He is a great drummer, but he sounds like a machine, pete had an organic sound that fit with the band.

Sounds like a machine?...do you want him to play out of time and "organic". Wake up dude, most metal drummers play with the precision of a machine. If you listened to some of Petes latter performances they were inconsitent in some places. Tim plays most of Sandovals parts respectfully and accurately....and dare I say it, better. This is coming from someone that loves Petes playing dearly. Clearely some of you are nostalgic because the fact is Tim sounds great with Morbid.

Judging by the fact that MA spend 6-7 fucking years to make this "I" album i could guess that next their record will out in some 2015-2017.

Am I the only one who senses a sh*tstorm approaching? Morbid Angel doesn't need to add that to their already tainted (recent) history.

I'm starting to have a feeling Peter heard the demos of what they were working on before they started recording and jumped ship. I dont blame him, i would too if i was used to being in one of the best death metal bands in the world, then to have it turn into a shitty techno metal band.

Chuck Schuldiner was all about 'let the death metal flow', Morbid Angel is all about 'let the butthurt flow'!

That publicity photo is gayer than most emo bands publicity photos. What the fuck is wrong with these guys?

I love how Vincent looks like a fat nikki sixx and tim has his shirt unbuttoned to show off his body. I thought this was a brutal death metal band not some glamour pussy fag band. Disgusting

Why do you love it? Do you love how gay it is, or how some dude happens to wear his hair?

If so, why is that? :-)

Is that what Morbid Angel is coming to? Let's hope not. But that last one might have something to say about it. Joking, sort of it's not quite that lame. Hope Pete gets back in the game and does well.

Pete probably has problems with an addiction of some kind. Is he's able to record a Terrorizer album and do guess appearances on other albums, he's able to record with Morbid Angel. Touring after a surgery isn't that good, I reckon, but depending of his state he could do it. At least they could say that he'll be back in the band soon after this tour. This is why I suspect 'other problems' to be faced before they'll say he's coming back. They found a good guy, able to challenge Pete on the kit and who might handle everything else much better, too...

No Pete = No Morbid...but current Morbid is no Morbid anyway, so...

I agree with BiorhythmicDrift - in fact, I'd say that Tim Yeung is a better drummer. He's younger, sure, and has the advantage of coming after pioneers like Sandoval, but he seems to me to be a better all-around drummer with better technique and habits, whereas Pete has injured himself probably due to certain drumming habits. On the other hand, though, there is that classic Sandoval "feel" that is a huge part of Morbid Angel's sound, but I'd say he hasn't really had that himself in years.

Morbid Angel is not the same band anymore, yes they know how to play their instruments but they have lost the flame they once had. Today they come across as a Glam Death Metal band.

I like how the dude with the little black soulpatch is touching little asian dude's armband with his junk. Little miss pretty is posing on the right with her big hair, while tough ponytail guy on the left looks like he wants to beat you up.
