GEOFF TATE: I Have Only Had About 10-15 Conversations With MICHAEL WILTON In 30 Years - Nov. 5, 2012
Robert Cavuoto of Guitar International recently conducted an interview with QUEENSRŸCHE vocalist Geoff Tate. An excerpt from the chat follows below.

Guitar International: When I spoke to Michael Wilton about QUEENSRŸCHE's "Dedicated To Chaos" last year, he mentioned that the band used YouSendIt.com to share guitar parts for the songs. It must have been nice for you all to be in the same room writing [for your new solo album, "Kings & Thieves"].

Geoff Tate: It's too bad that Michael didn't show up. He only lives five miles from me. It wasn't like he was in another country. He was actually the only one that did the YouSendIt.com. Everybody else was in the room. I know your publication and remember the interview you did with him for "Dedicated To Chaos". It was very interesting.

Guitar International: We chatted at length about gear, but not so much about "Dedicated To Chaos".

Geoff Tate: He liked playing around with gizmos and gear rather than writing songs and participating. Spending 30 years with the man, it was tough to have a conversation with him. I have only had about 10-15 conversations with him in 30 years.

Guitar International: After all the craziness went down within QUEENSRŸCHE, are there any key lessons to be learned from it all?

Geoff Tate: Well, you know, in every difficult situation I try to handle it with a sense of elegance and decorum. I was the spokesperson and the face of the band for so many years. I always felt it was my responsibility to present the band in a good way. I tell you, the fallout from the whole thing being so ugly that I never envisioned the end of the band being like this! I sort of envisioned it with us retiring in our 60s and being able to look back at all the great years we had. It's really hurtful to me that it all happened. If I could change it, I would.

Guitar International: Can you pinpoint any point in time where the band started to appear like it was on the verge of trouble?

Geoff Tate: No, it was completely out of the blue and I'm still in shock. It doesn't make sense to me. To most intelligent people, why would you take this incredibly successful music entity that has been in operation successfully for 30 years only to destroy the name and run it through the dirt and cut off your livelihood? Why would you cut your own throat? We had 10 years left in the public eye, and at this point you want to start all over again? Financially hurt or cripple yourself?! It's insanity!

Read the entire interview from Guitar International.

Out of the 10 - 15 conversations I've had with Michael Wilton, I claim 81% ownership.

My intentions were always about representing the band... by exposing myself on-stage and lubricating my wife with Insania.

I'm insanity, baby. YEAH!

I'm too tired today to argue about GT. His new record comes out tomorrow and i'm looking forward to it. I have a feeling it will be a long time before the other 3 guys put out a record.

I don't know him, so none of this BS effects me personally. He's just a singer. I'm tired of this whole thing.

Yes, I know next spring seems like forever when you're waiting for a kick ass METAL record. But don't worry, it'll be here before we know it!

Well if Geoff was so butthurt by this he should've just talked about this to Michael instead of waiting to get his ass fired and bitching about it to an interviewer like an MTV show contestant.

Geoff Tate is bat shit crazy.

I felt like I was taken advantage of when I found out about OPM2 and the use of session musicians. Geoff wants to be the face of QR, then IMO he lied to us last few fans. Matter of fact, Geoff Tate has pretty much tarnished the legacy of OPM. It was my all time favorite, but after hearing about the lack of contribution, I can't listen to it the same way. I just envision Geoff Tate spitting on me when I listen to it.

...it all depends on how many separate "conversations" you feel are contained within the following excerpt from his court declaration, since I did leave and come back a couple of times...

"Geoff Tate was setting up his station and the three of us walked around his area to our stations. I walked over to the area where my equipment was. I had just put on my guitar in preparation for the show when I heard a loud bang and then an 'uh oh' by our singer, Geoff Tate. I looked over to see that he (Geoff Tate) had knocked over the whole drum kit and was now spitting at our drummer, Scott Rockenfield, and yelling obscenities at him. At this point, I went over behind the drums to help assist pushing the drums back up on the stage when I heard our singer say, 'Hey, Mike, have a nice show,' and then when I looked at him, he spit right in my face and called me a 'motherf**ker.' As I was wiping my face, feeling violated, Geoff Tate came back at me yelling obscenities, 'F**ker,' 'F**k you, you mother f**ker.' I gave him a look from my towel, he approached me and when I was not looking, he punched me on the side of my face. The punch also hit my right eye which had a contact lens in it. My contact jostled and I was trying to get it back in place so I could see. I told him to get away from me, but he kept pushing his chest into me calling me 'Pussy, f**king pussy! What, are you going to cry?' My eye was watering from my contact, I couldn't see clearly, and I pushed him away. Then Scott Rockenfield (our drummer) came down and told him to get away from me. Geoff Tate then threw another punch at me, but I ducked and it hit Scott Rockenfield right in the face (his mouth area). Scott Rockenfield told him to back off and then Geoff Tate punched Scott Rockenfield again in the face. At this point our tour manager, Fozzy O'Hare, pulled Geoff Tate away and one of our guitar technicians, Kenny Bender, helped me by getting a cold water bottle on my face to stop any swelling or redness. Geoff Tate came back over and called me a 'pussy' and a 'crybaby' again."

Tate is so full of bullshit. Go read the all court declarations at Anybodylistening.net and see how full of bullshit Tate is about how "everybody else was in the room". You can also read sworn statements about how Geoff did everything he could to keep Wilton OUT of the picture during writing/recording on numerous albums. Funny how everybody but Tate has pretty much the same story, including crew and road manager.

The only one who cut his own throat was Tate. The comment sections of every single online media outlet is proof enough of that. Here, youtube, Metal sucks, etc (the list goes on and on).

Tate is the one playing dive bars and having to hawk his shitty wine at his bar gigs. I can't wait for the solo album sales numbers to come out.

All this could have been avoided if Tate had just an ounce of humility. He could have publicly apologized to his bandmates and the fans (especially at Rocklahoma) for his conduct and people are usually pretty forgiving of their heroes. But he won't. And his fall from grace has been Lance Armstrong-esque.......aside from the fact that that Tate was about .000009th of 1% as popular as Armstrong was. But the point remains. Went from hero to zero overnight.

One other thing, Tate keeps playing this "I didn't see it coming, it was a shock to me" card. Bullshit. Everybody that was close to them saw it coming years ago. Check out this interview Eddie Trunk did with Don Dokken, the subject of QR came up and both said they weren't a bit surprised and that nobody close to the situation was either. Tate has been living in his bubble surrounded by his circle of yes people.

have a friend who likes them and seen them a few times over the years. Other than a few tunes, I kind of thought they were cheese, but to each their own

Maybe it is just me, and I am not saying I condone violence, and Tate does seem like a tool and spitting is pretty wussy in itself, but his bandmates really come across as pussies.

In pro sports and other non private/gov't sector employment, fights sometimes break out between individuals. I doubt this is the only band where confrontation rose to this level. Maybe they just thought Tate was a dick, and used this as pre-text to ditch him, but there whole 'live in fear' of Tate this monster, really seems to make these guys just as Tate described. Pussies

Fuck taint, this is just the start of a spiral that will ruin him - and he and his YES men are all to blame.

Fast Forward 1-2 Years, Rockenfeld et al will own Queensryche Corp. Geoff Taint will be right back to square one with the GT solo band - having ploughed much needed money/time/resources into Queensryche MKII - instead of focusing on his solo career/wine/whatever...

Fast forward 5 years and he'll be totally on the skids...

He says things like "I haven't had a more than 10-15 conversations with Michael Wilton in 30 years" then in the same breath, talks about how his firing came out of the blue. Tate has been writing solo ablums under the Queensryche name for years now. If he truly felt he was the main power and force behind the band and its success, why does he feel the need to go out still under that banner rather than embrace his solo career under his own name? Mike Portnoy was one of main song writers of Dream Theater and you don't see him going out as 'Dream Theater featuring Mike Portnoy' do you? He at least has respect for the fans and himself enough to DO HIS OWN THING rather than just trash his former bandmates continuously in the press. Let the other guys have the name, Geoff! If you are as good as you say you are, then you don't need the Queensryche name do you? Play the songs you wrote until you have a deep enough solo catalog to pull from.

Tater Tot and his band played in Columbus last week at the Al Rosa Villa. This is the club where Dimebag was murdered. I chose not to go to show as I was certain it was going to suck. A friend did go and said the show was so-so, and that there were only about 100 people in attendance.

As many of you posters know, I have been a huge supporter of Queensryche/Rising West trying to fix the cancer and take control back in the once mighty band. I think Todd could possibly be the right guy for the job, after seeing the most recent live clips. And it's obvious what Tate and wife did to the band through their dictatorship, and lack of vision for what the fans want and where the band should head musically.

That being said, there is something to the statement above regarding Wilton and Tate not being friends or proper bandmates. If it's true that they really never spoke, then how could they function as a band when Wilton was the only real songwriter left?
I had suspicions that Tate and Wilton did not get along much, as he would only song write with outside/new guitarists. That includes Kelly during Q2k, Mike Stone on Tribe era (including playing live radio gigs with only Mike stone, not Wilton), and Jason Slater/Mitch during OM2 and Kelly/Jason during DTC. It shows that Tate felt he didn't have a writing partner he wanted to work with inside the band after DeGarmo left. Wilton should have stepped up and tried his damnest all those years to write and partner with Tate, or he has no one to blame but himself. Tate had no other option to go outside the band, since he doesn't play guitar. The key point in the destruction of Queensryche was the fact that Tate and his various co writers had a weak vision of what kind of music to write, inability to write to the level of Degarmo era Queensryche, and the fact that the band allowed Tate and non-neutral wife to manage it all. What a disaster it must have become. And they covered it up for years until last year's breaking point.

In hindsight, Queensryche should have broke up after Degarmo left.
Can you imagine being in a band where there is that much tension, bullshit, and Tate family manipulation? Degarmo was the glue for the band, and the creative partner for Tate, and without him the band tried, but ultimately failed time and time again. And to top it all off, Tate allowed his incredible voice to gradually wither away, and become hit and miss from show to show.

Here's hoping that Todd can be the glue and the songwriter that pushes the band back to creative heights! Go get em Todd and boys! And may Degarmo help you at some point along the way.

Tate just did 18 straight days on the road without calling in sick once, like a pro. There are a lot of clips to prove that people are attending his shows and digging what he does.

It’s a solo tour… if you’re going to compare apples to apples… wait until he does his version of QR.

The new CD is the best QR/Tate release since Tribe.

I’m ashamed to call myself a QR fan, based on all the shit talk.

This is what destroys legacies and relationships… the online he-said-she-said bullshit.

(see Pantera)

There is no big conspiracy here… they just broke up like bands do.

Stop hating so much… it’s only music, save it for the election.

Go and read the declarations, it is stated there that Tate actively wanted to keep Wilton out of the writing process. Tate wanted absolute control.

And I agree about Todd, seeing the live clips it feels like a band reborn. It's now actually A BAND again and not just some dude in the spotlight, singing badly.

I agree with ParasiteLost. I think it was Jackson's declaration that detailed Tate's behavior with Degarmo, and Degarmo's departure. After that, it looks like Tate schemed to ice out the others creatively and assume control. He is probably shocked that they didn't quit long ago, and even more shocked when they kicked his ass out. Long over due. Queensryche can continue without Tate, and I am looking forward to seeing what new material the band produces. Hopefully at some point Tate honestly recognizes his own behavior and changes his path.

Also, if Tate is doing 18 straight days on the road, he needs to reevaluate his plans. That pace can't go on too long. At 50 years of age, to go at that pace you had better be doing everything to take care of yourself or you are on a path for a crash. Most likely scenario is that his wine consumption and eating is up, his exercise and self discipline is down. Too many of us in our late 40s and older know too many people in that mode that end up with a heart attack. Hope he does well with his solo career, but he alone was not Queensryche. After the cabaret fiasco, the crappy MC2 and Dedicated to Chaos, my hope is that Queensryche will do well without him.
