AXL ROSE Says Next GUNS N' ROSES Album 'Will Come Out Sooner' Than 'Chinese Democracy' Did - Oct. 30, 2012
In a rare interview, GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose spoke to Edna Gundersen of USA TODAY about the classic GUNS lineup, the band's next album and the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. A couple of excerpts follow below.

On the next GUNS N' ROSES album: "All the guys are writing, and we recorded a lot of songs over the years. We'll figure out what we feel best about. 'Chinese Democracy' was done in piecemeal with one person here and one there at different times. 'Appetite For Destruction' was the only thing written with lyrics and melody fitting the guitar parts at the same time. After that, I got a barrage of guitar songs that I was supposed to put words to, and I don't know if that was the best thing for GUNS. I do want to lean more toward lyrics and melody."

On 2008's "Chinese Democracy", which was reportedly in the works for 13 years: "I had to deal with so many other things that don't have to do with music but have to do with the industry. There's such a loss of time. It was more about survival. There wasn't anyone to work with or trust. Someone would come in to help produce and the reality was they just wanted to mix it and get it out the door. They had a different agenda. (The next album) will come out sooner."

On how the original GUNS N' ROSES lineup might have survived: "Maybe if we could have worked together in the way 'Appetite' was put together. I was really naïve. I thought the success of that record would bring everyone together more. It did the exact opposite. They got success and wanted to run in their own directions. I thought they'd go, 'Whoa, it did work.' But they wanted to do their own huge bigger success off of GUNS."

On the possibility of a GUNS truce: "I feel that ball's not in my court. I'm surviving this war, not the one who created this war."

On his decision to skip GUNS N' ROSES' 2012 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction: "It wasn't painful to not be there. It was a beating to deal with all the pressure of feeling I was supposed to be there and deciding what to do. I try to be respectful about getting an honor or recognition, but I don't really know what the Rock Hall actually is. In my experience with the people who run it, I don't see it having to do with anything other than them making money."

This is the most contrite and gentlemanly Axl has been in a decade. Adler, McKagan, Izzy, Slash and Axl securing their children's college funds and legacy forever.

I'm buying a T-shirt.

Axl has said that Slash has to clear up the lies he told about him before Axl would consider a reunion, and that seems to be what he is implying again. The problem is Slash says he doesn't even know what Axl is upset about. So, this stalemate could definiately continue.

Why should they not pay to see Axl if they are a fan of his? You never know when he's going to retire, or if a reunion would happen anyway.

I wouldn't mind seeing this version of GnR live, but I am not paying for a ticket so I can sit around in a theater with my thumb up my ass for 3 hours waiting for Axl to decide if he wants to play.

Why would anyone care what the hired guys write? I have just as much right to make a GNR song as DJ Ashba does. Does that make it GNR? Nope.

Yikes, this FIFTY YEAR OLD MAN is stuck in the 80s. Dude, grow up. "Wahhhh waaahhh wahhhh, Slash says I suck."

He's like some old man who is still bitter about high school.

And all this press he's doing lately? It means he's realizing that the music world moved on without him, decades ago. No one really gives a shit about new GNR, except for nostalgic fans from the 80s and 90s. He's trying desperately to save his sinking ship, and it won't work. The Vegas residency will not sell out, he'll never release another album, and he's just going to slink away like he did in the 90s.

Axl is so totally detached from reality it's not even funny. If you're going to make excuses for why it took you 13 years to make an album, here's a piece of advice for you... don't! There is absolutely no reason you can come up with that will make sense to a sane person!

I know that Nu Gn'R is not Gn'R, that's it's Axl solo project but great music is great music and that the only thing that matters to me. It will be tough to put out the successor of a masterpiece like Chi. Dem. but i'm sure Axl and co. will be up for the task. He could have made 10 shitty albums like Slash did but i prefer he takes his time and comes up with something i'll listen all my life like Chi. Dem. and not forgettable shit like Slash, Duff and Izzy did.

that's the first I've heard (or read) Axl not completely dismissing playing or being civil with Slash. I'm sure Slash did go a bit over the top in his book, interviews.

I personally like Slash's first 2 CDs, first VR album, and about 1/2 of the first "solo" Cd. Think you're being a bit over the top to make a point. but oh well.

You're right, i go over the top a bit (10 shitty albums).

Slash did OK, he did straight hard rock albums and there's nothing wrong with this. For me, they are forgettable albums. First two, i agree, are good, but not the kind of albums i need to get back to. First VR was good, but still, you listen to it 1-2 times and you already sucked any substance the album have. They're not long lasting listening experiences like Appetite, UYI and Chi. Dem. can be.

and I've agreed with you re: that to a point. Especially the early ones, they are more guitar records...but some decent songs...I think some of his most rippin' playing on the first 2, but definitely straight forward song writing...like I said, its sort of what you get from Joe Perry, Keith Richards, etc, when they venture out solo. It lacks the vision of the great singer/frontman/writers melodies, vision.

and that's why I probably don't like the new Slash CD, I don't mind Myle's voice at times, but I think its Myles that takes those songs in a "modern" rock direction. Very commerical and bland sounding. Nickelbackish. Not my cup of tea.

Going to this blog for any thoughtful comments on GNR is like going to Dave Mustaine for thoughtful political ideas...
Stale, repetitive, one-sided biased nonsense, not based on facts, laughable – basically, total BS.
I think when it comes to the current gnr, I may just listen to Axl on this one. He is actually in the band, you know. the old band hasn't been together for 20 years, people need to move on.

Chinese Democracy is a very good album and gets better with time and when you just listen to the music and take it for what it is. Slash's first solo albums was very good too, and the second one was fine, nust straight out rock n'roll. Velvet Revolver made 2 fine albums, would have been nice to have a third and a little heavier. Duff's Loaded are fine, heavier sounding Foo Fighters. they are good albums and many times better then most of the crap on the radio but still maybe not masterpieces but so what, at least its new music and there are a lot of great songs in there. but Chinese Democracy is probably the best album by any one of them.

He is a pretty intelligent guy. I wish he woulda come out a few years ago explaining things like he has in this interview. I know a lot of people throw shit at the guy but as he said, it must be weird to be a normal guy who's had issues in his life all of a sudden he gets in the limelight and then everyone expects you to be this moneymaking machine, when there's other things the guys dealing with. It'd also be hard to trust people who don't really know you from before fame and it's like, "are they really my friend?" or are they just trying to milk off me.

I think he's probably had depression for a long time and that's part of what led to the large delay with the record being released, but it's good to hear that the next record will come out earlier and he does seem to be level-headed in my opinion.

It's too bad Axl's Chinese Democracy concert, consists of his fat and dated self in his out of style cheesy true religion jeans and ed hardy doucebag shirts. Backed by bad 80's video footage, and a guitarist (what number of replacement guitarist is he on)? in his wanna be slash hat, playing songs from 80's and 90's that the real original band ALL wrote together! Sad he doesnt respect that Slash and Duff and him, are what people REALLY want to see, when they see a "guns n' roses" concert.
