PETER CRISS Says He Was 'Devastated' When ACE FREHLEY Broke His Heart - Oct. 25, 2012
Original KISS drummer Peter Criss was interviewed on the October 23 edition of "The Opie & Anthony Show" on SiriusXM satellite radio about his newly released memoir, "Makeup To Breakup: My Life In And Out Of Kiss".

On how far into his tenure with KISS he realized there were going to be problems and ego clashes with a couple of the other members:

Peter: "Three, four years… five years. I could start feeling [guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley and bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons] wanting the power. The more we were going up the ladder of future and fame, the more it was kind of swaying to Mr. Simmons and Stanley. Ace [Frehley, guitar] and I were kind of not getting our musical [ideas] in.

"It's funny — I wrote the biggest hit the band [ever had], and meanwhile, I was kind of always getting put down for this stuff.

"So it was always a battle, and eventually, I didn't get the great education that maybe the other two guys got, so they would start playing mind games. I don't like games. I like genuine guys. I like real people that tell me how it is not matter much it hurts. And I don't like to be messed with. And they would constantly battered — they called it 'battery,' if you read Gene's book — [they were] battering my brain. And let me tell you, it takes its toll. I feel today, I'm still a casualty of rock and rolls wars, because it turned out every day was a battle for one thing or another, for some kind of running the band, or being the head of the band. And eventually they got their way. And I was miserable."

On how he and his KISS bandmates were seemingly on the same page when they first started out:

Peter: "I thought we were pretty much brothers in arms. I thought we all wanted the same thing, we all wanted to do the same thing, we all wanted the same road to success. But that changed immensely. I realized even when I met [Gene and Paul], they had a deal with some band and they dumped the band because it wasn't their way. That should have given me an immediate 'lights on.' And the same thing started happening as we would roll along. And now they got their way."

On his relationship with Ace Frehley:

Peter: "Ace, I would have done anything for him. I stuck up for him through all the years. I was in his corner. Gene used to tell him, 'The best friend you've got in this band is Peter Criss. He'll always be there for you.' And it broke my heart when [Ace] broke my heart. In the book I tell the story, but towards the reunion, towards the end, I was devastated, man. I couldn't believe what went on. [Peter was reportedly hurt when he found out that Ace was making more money than he was on the "Farewell" tour. — Ed.] And it was again about the old M-O-N-E-Y. Money, money, money. Power, power, power. It never was enough for those guys."

On KISS' infamous October 1979 appearance on Tom Snyder's "The Tomorrow Show" when a visibly irritated Stanley and Simmons tried to contain the bombastic (and drunk) Ace Frehley, whose nonstop laughter and joking overshadowed the rest of the group:

Peter: "When we got to the dressing room, Ace passed out — immediately hit the couch. I still kept laughing about it, 'cause we had such a great time. We [Ace and I] finally had a great time in an interview; we finally enjoyed ourselves. I knew how pissed off they [Paul and Gene] were, and that made it even better. Because they didn't finally get to take over the interview. Gene loves to hear himself talk, so he didn't get a chance to do that. And I knew we really got them P.O.ed, 'cause we did take over. And Tom had the best time, I think, of his life. It's considered one of the best talk shows the band, in Kisstory, we ever did. And I had a ball. Tom came in and said, 'I wanna thank you, guys. I had the best time of my life. Where's Ace?' He saw him on the floor, and he said, 'When he wakes up, tell him I love him.' He sent me a great picture. And they [Paul and Gene] were furious. And I got a feeling then, we should do this more often, because we got so much feedback from the fans — 'It's about time you and Ace spoke up' — and we enjoyed it so much. We tried, but it was always a fight to get supremacy of anything in that band."

What a pussy, all he does is whine & cry. All the fans cried on the farewell tour when they heard how bad Peter played.

I think at one point or another we've all been in a shitty relationship-whether it be with a significant other, co-workers, teammates, a boss, etc. I feel Peter's pain to that degree.

I do not think I can fathom, though, being in a big ass band, making MILLIONS, and then fucking it up to the point where I'm kicked to the curb and have nothing.

I bust my ass everyday, work 50 hours a week and still have a hard time making ends meet.

"It's funny — I wrote the biggest hit the band [ever had], and meanwhile, I was kind of always getting put down for this stuff."

I assume he is talking about Beth which is a complete throwaway track. Just because this song was a commercial hit doesn't mean it is a great Kiss song. I might have more respect for Peter if he bothered to show up for Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park studio overdubs. Go in the studio and record your lines properly!

Peter doesn't harp on the specific issue with Ace.

Getting paid less than Ace (for the reunion) was only mentioned in the book, not in the interview.

Weird sentence too...

"And it broke my heart when [Ace] broke my heart."

I am a TRUE Kiss fan since 75 and I love that they are still rocking , MONSTER just rips the seams apart ! Love the original 4 still do , I will pull out DTK and R&ROver or even Dynasty and rock th house !
But A & P chose to sell their rights to THEIR make up , threw them away like trash , probably thinking they were done , well .......their not ! If A&P would not have sold them , we would not be having this discussion now , end of story .

And they are more popular now than they ever have been , save for the late 70's , and they will never be that big again . But they are STILL adding to their legacy ! I can't wait for the next BONE JARRING disc !

"save for the late 70s"...well that's sort of a big "save". and you can add Mid 70's to that as well.

I'd have more sympathy for this douche if he was better to the fans. I drove 40 miles, waited 2 1/2 hours, spent $55 for two copies of his book, and he's got his blonde, long haired hippie guy handler there making sure you don't take a picture with him or get anything else signed. Fukc you, pal. That wouldn't be acceptable in 1979, and it's certainly ridiculous now. The turnout wasn't that big, and he could have shown some appreciation to the people that still give a rat's ass about him. Other rock stars have been at the same place, and been much more accommodating.

..."if I wasn't in KISS at all, how far would have my skills taken me?" You did write some of my favorite KISS songs, and you clearly had the best singing voice. But neither good songwriting, nor good singing is what KISS is about, and being the best of the "not so good" guys isn't going to get you the sort of success on your own that you had in KISS.
Peter even said himself that he didn't have much of an education, and you don't even really need one to know: There has NEVER, EVER, IN THE HISTORY OF MAN, been an equal partnership. Doesn't happen. Someone comes out ahead, and someone loses. Sometimes its not a lot, but its NEVER equal.

You lived a life that very few people get to live, I work just to pay bills, I don't give a fuck about your hurt feelings.
I am however, glad to see you are healthy enough to whine.

The best singing voice in Kiss? Without Paul Stanley who in his prime was one of the best frontmen in rock, this band would have been a shit sandwich. All books from Rock stars or former rock stars are gonna dish dirt. It sell's, and people are buying. Do you think Grisham would write a book about poetry? Hell no, he writes what he KNOWS and that's Trial's and Lawyers. I always wait for the price to fall after a year and buy them, or get them for free at the library. Growing up I loved Kiss. Great hooks and riffs, songs like Flaming Youth, King of the nighttime world, Shout it out Loud, Love Gun, were the essence of teen angst. Thru the years I kept up with them, bought their cd's, but none of them captured the first 6 albums' vibe(not including the live albums either). Then finally they put out REVENGE. Man, I thought they fucking finally found the sound they've been looking for. Make-up off for good and a edgier Kiss. The REVENGE tour that followed was off the chain. Singing "Take it off" , strippers walked on stage and literally took it off and Paul Stanley asking, "How do you like our friends"? Then came the fucking reunion. What a fucktard decision to reunite with Ace & Peter. Not halfway thru it it became another shit sandwich. But, instead of getting back with Kulick they kept the fucking make-up on. I just didn't get what they were thinking. Thayer get's in the band, act's like Ace and away they go to Sonic Boom. I heard it, only 3 song's to my liking. Now, Monster. Wow. How many words can you make out of disappointing? I think that Kiss has run the course. Most bands have a 6 to 8 year creative period where they write their best stuff together. Sure seem's that way now with Kiss.

BSLASH, good to hear U. Alway's enjoy your post. Steven

The reunion was trash, as everyone knows. I love the classic lineup and the original 6 and all that, but these days i'd rather have the current lineup. Except with different makeup for Thayer & Singer.

Parts of his book were interesting, but by the end, it was just him complaining about how Gene is a greedy sex addict, Paul is feminine, Ace betrayed him, and the world shortchanged him.
