METALLICA To Begin Work On New Music 'In The Next Couple Of Months' - Oct. 24, 2012
METALLICA will enter the studio "in the next couple of months" to begin work on its next full-length album, tentatively due in 2014. Speaking to Loudwire, the band's guitarist, Kirk Hammett, stated about the status of the songwriting process for the next CD, "We just filmed a 3D movie up in Vancouver. That's been at the forefront of our attention right now. We've been dealing with the audio aspect of that and pretty soon we're going to start seeing footage from the concert. Once that particular project kind of dies down and we complete what we need to do with that, then we're going to start writing songs. We're going to meet up and start throwing ideas together. That should be really, really interesting. I'm really looking forward to that. What's not going to be so fun is going through all the musical ideas that we have. I'm not really good at editing myself because I think it's all good. To be more thorough on that, though, I foresee us starting to get together fairly soon, like in the next couple of months. We'll start hammering away on it."

"Death Magnetic" was METALLICA's last under its contract with Warner Music Group — where the band has been making records since 1984.

METALLICA frontman James Hetfield told The Pulse Of Radio about the end of the band's contract with Warner, "It's kind of a good feeling to feel that you're free from any piece of paper that binds you to something. But over our career, we've learned a lot about record companies, the goods and evils of the business and this and that, and we're not very focused on that right now. It is what it is, and when it becomes time for us to either renegotiate or shop around or do things ourselves or something like that, we don't know. There's nothing but options, which is great."

METALLICA's 3D movie will reportedly mix concert footage with a storyline.

The band is financing the project itself and has hired "Predators" director Nimród Antal to get behind the camera. Antal filmed METALLICA's three concerts in Vancouver, Canada for use in the movie.

The show featured a brand new 140-foot-by-50-foot stage that included what a post at the band's web site called "colossal components and striking visual elements spanning METALLICA's entire 30-year career."

Nothing against Rick Rubin, but I think they should ditch him for the next album and go with another producer. I suggest Andy Sneap.

seems like metallica announce they're going into the studio every 6 months. Then they get side tracked by releasing Lulus and 3D movies vans sneakers toothbrushes jigsaw puzzles and everything but the kitchen sink. They are not focused enough to write a solid album on a consistent basis. death magnetic was great but by the time the next album is released itll be 2020

I like Metallica. Like most old school fans, I prefer their earlier stuff but I actually really liked Death Magnetic and saw it as a step forward. I am greatful that they're still making tunes as they're getting old.

But honestly, why the fuck are they making a movie? Like, is this something people want? At first I just thought it was a 3D concert, but there's a storyline? Does this mean like actual acting with love interests or some Hollywood shit?

I never saw the Justin Bieber movie or the Spice Girls movie, nor do I want to, but is this the sort of thing they're doing? Coz that would really scream cash grab to me.

Look at it more as documenting them in action live with a backstory and some special effects thrown in, or in this case, possibly worn as 3D glasses.

I have faith that this movie will be cool, despite what we may or may not already think about it. I do dig that they've released many professionally-filmed shows from the 'World Magnetic' tour. They fucking rock majorly live nowadays. Robert Trujillo is bottom-heavy yet still grooving, making the band tighter.

I'd always be welcome to seeing any live movie of people doing that.

:-)

I was observing James Hetfield working out a riff idea with the others in a room..

One thing you can say about Metallica: they don't play the game like everyone else: that make their own rules up as they go and they've earned it, and continue to earn it, the hard way: by actually working and working hard, and meaning it.

They're in it for the right reasons: to rock, to push themselves and grow creatively and to share in the enjoyment of that with anyone else who wants to come along.

Good luck with the vibin' and riffin' for the next album! Metallica rarely bores. Enough of a reason to maintain interest.

They are about the money dude, not the rock. Push themselves? They have done nothing but regress since the 90s! St Anger, LULU, is that "growing creatively"? No.

there is no reason for this movie to have a theatrical narrative - a really cool 3D movie mixing live footage, vintage footage and some cool Metallica lyric themed CGI would have been perfect...

'My Apocalypse' was pretty much the only decent, slightly thrash-reminiscent track on DM. Oh and that riff at 6:16 in 'All Nightmare Long'.

But hey, at least it was a step in the right direction. Just fearing they'll tone it down once again and release another boring-ass, mid-tempo Black album.

I gotta say, you hit the nail on the head. That's my prediction anyway. The songs were too long on DM so I'm thinking they take a more streamlined approach this time around. Maybe it won't be "middle of the road" though, as I think they may have a fire under their ass after big 4 and 30yr anniversary. Not that I agree with you about the black album, I think it was perfect for the time. Just when everyone started going "epic" Metallica changed the game, again. Remember November rain? Ugh, what crap.

But they haven't done a good record in a long time IMO. Also, if you stack them up to what the other 3 in the big 4 have done recently, they come in fourth.

Magnetic sucks compared to Endgame, Worship Music, Thirteen and World Painted Blood!

Hoping for something Epic like they used to do, but not holding my breath.

The new album should be called: The Wah Wah Pedal Initiative

I'd hardly call myself a fan boy, and I appreciate you 'calling it as it is' but the way I see it, and I'm just 'calling it as it is', the band sells out stadiums world wide, had a pretty decent record in DM, is still probably the biggest metal band... Why would they stop making music exactly?

Speaking of 'calling it as it is', I noticed your band is going well.

Been waiting for this. Death Magnetic was a great step forward. I really hope they make something even stronger and harder. I do agree tho with slutkitchen Kirk does use his wah wah to much i always have thought that. But we can say there was one album where he didnt Shit anger ohhh i mean saint anger lol. Not one guitar solo in that album. And it was shit, Bob Rock sure took them in a wrong direction.

Again looking forward to see if they have been watching the boards and do what the fans have been wanting from them their old style of music even doing something similar to the black album would better then the LOAD shit they put out after that.

I'm a Metallica fan of old. I actually would be most grateful if they didn't realize any original music but rather focused entirely on cover songs. Their "spark" has been long gone and what they have evolved into today is a shadow of their past. Sure you can still sell out stadiums for your concerts but if you're like me you are dying to hear the classic tunes, none of the new music. To this day I know every song, every lyric for every album up until Load. But from Load onwards I regret to say I haven't paid any real attention to their music. The mental spotlight is still on the past and in the past is where it must remain. Let's just stick to cover tunes, mmmkay?

I'm sure it will be exactly as boring and predictably lame as Black Album, Load, Reload, St. Anger, Death Magnetic, and that stupid EP they put out a while back. Lulu sucked, but at least they tried something different for the first time in twenty years. Maybe they should just be a "metal oldies circuit" band and stop with the shit heaps they refer to as new albums. Just play your old songs but with James' new found absolutely crappy vocal style.

With all love and respect I have for Metallica, since 1988, and being in a fan club since 1994, and see like 12 gigs of theirs and so on. I find it quite fucking disappointing that after they said they'd be releasing albums more frequent after Magnetic, they in fact are having the longest gap between albums. Fucking 6! years. I understand everything, families, tours, videos, etc., but 6 years, this is just wrong.
