METALLICA Guitarist: 'DEEP PURPLE Definitely Belongs In The ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME' - Oct. 17, 2012
METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett, who was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame with his bandmates in 2009, told Artisan News that he was a bit turned off given that the Hall has overlooked so many other great rock bands, including DEEP PURPLE, who is among 15 finalists for induction into the Rock Hall's Class Of 2013.

"I've been lobbying for DEEP PURPLE for a long, long time," he said (see video below).

"Ritchie Blackmore and DEEP PURPLE have amazing songs."

He added, "If BLACK SABBATH can be in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, DEEP PURPLE definitely belongs in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. 'Cause they had great songs, great musicianship, they had an impact, and they're a huge influence on the heavy metal community as a whole. So I definitely think that they belong in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame."

For the first time, the public gets to vote alongside the artists, historians and music industry insiders of the Rock Hall voting body. From now until December 5, fans can vote on RollingStone.com for the nominees they'd like to see inducted. The top five acts will comprise a "fan's ballot" that will count as one of the more than 600 ballots that determine the Class Of 2013. The results will be announced in mid-December.

The April 18, 2013 event is set for Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, marking the first time the ceremony will be held in the city since 1993. HBO will tape the show for broadcast at a later date.

Artists are considered for inclusion in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 25 years after the release of their first recording.

Speaking to VintageRock.com, DEEP PURPLE singer Ian Gillan recently stated about the possibility of one day being inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, "You've got to take this with great respect. We don't have anything like that where we come from, over in Europe or anywhere else. It's an American thing. It's so completely different. In America, you're great and really do support and show appreciation for your artists, musicians, film stars, whatever it may be. And you give them visible signs in accolades and all that sort of thing. And you cheer and…you're very supportive. It's the completely opposite in the U.K. They want to kill you. [laughs] The moment you get up to any form of success, they just want to wipe you out and deride you. It's part of the culture. At the same time, we've just focused on the music."

He added, "I honestly can't tell you whether or not we should be there or not. It could be because of the fragmented nature of the band that they wouldn't know how to deal with it.

"To us, with the greatest respect, it doesn't mean a lot although it's rather like an award in the U.K., if I were to get one. I probably wouldn't accept it. But then again, after a week of thinking about it, I would accept it because it would be on behalf on the family and friends and everyone who supports the band and who's looked after us after all these years. It's kind of a recognition of everyone. But whether we deserve it, I don't know. I always get embarrassed talking about this stuff."

Former PURPLE member Glenn Hughes recently said of the Hall Of Fame: "We know the people in charge and we know how they think. It's become like a joke in a way. Gene Simmons [KISS] will talk to me about it, and go on a rant and all, and he is exactly right. But I'm not gonna hold my breath. DEEP PURPLE, KISS, YES and especially RUSH should obviously all be in."

Wow, way to go out on a limb and take a brave stand there, Kirk.

Are you also in favor of playing puppies and smiling babies?

Seriously...of course he's right. It's just not exactly a cutting-edge opinion.

Every few years, the RNRHOF plays catch up and inducts the artists that should have been inducted years ago when they can no longer stand the criticism.

That is why Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd got inducted in 2007 and that is why Deep Purple and Rush will be inducted. It's just to quiet mouths rather than their belief that they should be included.

There really needs to be a more defined set of rules other than 25 years after their first album.

And for the record, Deep Purple and especially Rush deserve to be in HOF.

...personally, I think the Pistols, Axl Ritchie got it right. The RnRHOF is a SHAM. It's subject to the personal opinions / whims of a select few.

But if there was a "legitinate" RnR HOF, Deep Purple (and Rush, Maiden, Priest, etc) would already be there.

And Madonna would not.

has already put his opinion of the RRHOF out there, so they will probably be passed over. And it makes little to no difference either way.

It would have been great if back in '09, Metallica would've told the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Shame to not bother with inducting them until they've inducted Deep Purple and Rush.

Ritchie Blackmore and/or the guys in Rush should buy a full page's worth of advertising space in Rolling Stone or some other major music rag, and have published in it an open letter to the RnR Hall of Shame, telling them to fuck off an die, and the reasons why.

Say what you will about Eddie Trunk, but he is right in stating that even when the Hall of Shame finally relents and decides to nominate one of these legendary bands, it's still disrespectful because they nominated them so much later than they should have.

It's not a Rock n Roll institution because Madonna,Grand Master Flash,L,L, Cool Jay and other totally non rock related artists are in it. The public is being fed bullshit by a few self important idiots.

Well, it's not like we didn't know that already but thanks for the heads up anyway, and with all due respect if there was a real RARHOF instead of this joke Deep Purple would have been inducted way before Metallica.

COMMENT | James Hetfield Promises To Get Completely Drunk While Writing The New Metallica Album
posted by : Fuck Lulu.

Lamenting a lack of raw emotion and good music on their last five studio albums, Metallica lead singer, James Hetfield, announced he was going to resume binge drinking in an effort to "get back to his roots."

"I came to a realization the other day when I started to think of what the 19 year old James Hetfield would think if he saw where I was today," Hetfield said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, "the 19 year old James was a drunk who liked to trash hotel rooms, while the 43 year old James is sober and has a psychologist that tours with his band. I am pretty sure the 19 year old James would call me a poser and kick my ass. For Christ's sake we were occasionally called Alcohollica for freakin' reason and it's time to get back to that."

Hetfield admitted hitting the Jagermeister and Coors Light was "like riding a bicycle; you never forget how." Being a belligerent drunk, Hetfield has once again started lording over the song writing process in Metallica and the new album has begun to sound an awful lot like the Master of Puppets.

"Writing when I am fucked up is a very liberating experience," Hetfield said, "in the old days I would stumble into the studio and record a few songs. Then the next day when I was sober I would try to relearn everything I played from the night before. I am actually a better guitarist when I am blitzed, but if you have ever listened to St. Anger then you probably already knew that."

Hetfield went on say that not only is the music better when he's drunk, but that the lyrics ironically sound better too.

"Take for instance these lines from Harvester of Sorrow: 'My Life Suffocates, Planting Seeds of Hate, I've Loved, Turned to Hate, Trapped Far Beyond My Fate.' I have literally no idea what I was trying to say, but it sounds so damn cool. That's what being shit-faced does for me. Now, in contrast consider this chorus from Fanatic: 'Frantic tick tick tick tick tick tick tock, Frantic tick tick tick tick tick tick tock.' I mean if I was drunk you could almost excuse that, but I was clean. The worst part is that we decided to record it, so I can't even blow it off like it was some bad alcohol induced hallucination."

The new, constantly plowed Helfield did acknowledge that relationships between his fellow Metallica band members have both improved and disintegrated since he went back to the bottle.

"The first thing I did when I got off the wagon again was to call up Lars [Ulrich] and tell him how much of a fucking pussy I think he is," Hetfield said, "he cried of course and said I hurt his feelings, but told him he could shove his feelings up his ass and put them right next to his personal art collection. This exchange lead to the creation of a new song entitled Just Shut Up And Drum."

On the flip side, Hetlfield said he and lead guitarist, Kirk Hammett, have a better understanding of each other now that he's back on week long benders.

"James told me that it was time to put guitar solos back into our songs and if Lars didn't like it 'could suck my dick. So, needless to say, that made me happy,'" Hammett said recalling a 4 AM phone call he received from Hetfield, "James and I had a good conversation and got back on the same page muscially in between the twenty-three times that he told me that 'I love you, man.'"

Hammett expressed a little apprehension at having to solo again, as he admitted he hadn't played a decent solo since To Live Is To Die all the way back on the ...And Justice For All album.

"To be honest most of my solos from the black album up through St. Anger sound like they belong in a Def Leppard song, so I've had to start practicing again," Hammett admitted, "I've playing a lot of Guitar Hero II on my PS2 and I just finished Kiss' Strutter and began working on Warrant's Cherry Pie."

Expect the new Metallica album to hit the store shelves as soon as Hetfield can sober up enough to lay down the vocals. Tentative recent date is set for November 2012.

COMMENT | keep in mind that this is not the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal HOF...

the definition of RnR goes way back to the 50s (maybe more?), and it referred to that day's pop, rock and other genres... the fact that Eddie Trunk hammers the HoF b/c a Madonna is in there and not certain overlooked bands/artists that are certainly deserving shows his ignorance... Elvis was a pop artist, but considered RnR... Cash was a country artist, but most definitely RnfnR...

having said that, all these bands that we talk about all the time have certainly been overlooked and are most definitely deserving... if an artist is able to make an impact on pop culture and it's evidenced either in their record sales (insert whatever artists here), merch/branding sales (KISS, Elvis, Marley, many others), touring-wise (Maiden, Springsteen, U2, many others), their performance on the charts, or some combination of these and/or any other milestones i may have missed, then they are well-deserving of being included in an institution to recognize "the best" in the music industry... that's why it kills me when they sometimes recognize essentially one- or two-hit wonders over someone like a Rush or Priest or KISS, etc.

keep in mind, too, that they are trying to cut across all genres, and there's definitely some political behind the scenes BS that goes on, and you have a recipe for not pleasing all the people with their selections

the biggest joke is that they are doing this year is the fan vote... if the cumulative results of all fans who vote only counts as ONE ballot among 600, you're talking about a 0.17% share of the vote (i.e., much less than 1% of the vote)... if they allowed the cumulative fan vote to count for something significant, like 10% or 15% of the vote, it would likely help to right some wrongs, or give that extra push that a borderline candidate to the industry but fan favorite needs to get in...

sorry for the long-winded rant! dislike away! ;-P
