KISS: 'Monster' Cracks U.S. Top 3 - Oct. 17, 2012
"Monster", the 20th studio album from legendary rockers KISS, sold 56,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 3 on The Billboard 200 chart.

KISS' previous CD, "Sonic Boom", opened with 108,000 units back in October 2009 to enter the chart at No. 2. This marked the band's highest-charting LP ever.

KISS has notched nine Top 10 albums, according to Billboard.com. Its previous highest-charting set was 1998's "Psycho Circus", which debuted and peaked at No. 3 with 110,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The group's other high-charting sets include 1975's "Alive!" (No. 9), 1977's "Love Gun" (No. 4) and 1992's "Revenge" (No. 6).

Described in a press release as a "12-track, straight-ahead rock 'n' roll album," "Monster" features collaborations among all four members — including co-founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons and longtime members guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer — in an album that shows the band at the top of its game.

Stanley and Thayer were interviewed on this past Monday night's (October 15) edition of the nationally syndicated radio show "Rockline" with host Bob Coburn. You can now listen to the program at RocklineRadio.com.

Because they're fun simple rock 'n roll. Again, not every band has to be completely serious and complex, and even the ones that are, usually aren't ALL the time. The key word is FUN... look into it.

It's only more impressive because VH had been w/o DLR for so long. If you compared ADKOT to Psycho Circus you'd be more on target. Although Monster is a much, much better album than PC.

Kiss needs to drop songs like Shock Me,I was Made For Lovin You,Shout It,Out Loud and a few others from the set list.To make room for SB and Monster tunes.

I agree at the very least they should drop "Shock Me" and "Black Diamnod" from the set since those are Ace & Peter's vocal songs, and put the 2 that Eric & Tommy sing. That way at least it'd give them a chance to do their own thing for once. Of course this is probably a pipe dream as KISS pretty much never changes their set.

I really like the record. I think it's funny that people make fun of Kiss, but will buy Van Halen or AC/DC records as if they are written by Einstein. It’s only rock and roll, but a lot of people on here seem intent on sucking the fun right out of it….must be a terrible life constantly walking around being a crusty bitter bitch all of the time with nothing better to do than try and make others feel bad for enjoying something…...SAD!

Haha! Well I totally understand you getting your undies in a bunch and calling me dickhead, I spent the bulk of my elementary school years in the late 70s/early 80s defending my dedication to KISS and being made fun of for my KISS shirts. I still listen to those old albums religiously and even had Ace autograph me and get it inked in. That doesn’t change the fact that I think they suck now and you don’t.. so we should probably cancel our plans to go out for coffee.

It doesn't even faze me anymore that Tommy and Eric are wearing Ace's and Peter's makeup. Tommy Thayer is a really cool guitarist and Eric Singer has been on some of Kiss' stronger, more recent records. I'm happy for them that they decided to just keep the songwriting within the band, and go from there. That's really cool. Congratulations, guys. #3 is a pretty cool spot to land you first week out saleswise. Cheers.

I actually think Genes voice sounds great on this cd. Paul too. As much as I hate Tommy and Eric doing the imposter thing, I have to admit he sounds ALOT less like ACE this time around and Eric's drumming is great. I've been a fan for a long time. Pretty much the beginning. I'll admit to being caught up in the 80s and liking stuff that I can question now, but at this stage I can say that this cd is a good rockin set of tunes. Especially from a band whose two main guys are 60 plus. Genes playing some good bass here too, concidering he can't play. If these tunes were from a new band wearing jeans and flannel shirts it wouldn't get half the flack it is because its kiss. Most of the negative comments must be comming from guys who have sexuality issues or just can't get the stick out of their own asses. I expect kiss to be kiss, and I'm rarely disappointed.

Is wrong with it being simple music? Most music is. You act like you're so above everyone else, why? It's not brain surgery. It's a fuckin cd of songs. And it sounds good. And that's why KISS has lasted 40 years....because they sound good. Not because they wear makeup and costumes. Guess what? AC/DC....simple. Black Sabbath...simple. KISS still rocks....simple as that.

I just got it last night. Only listened to 3 songs....but its an ass kicker, IMO. Everything I've read seems to say that its a few steps better than Sonic Boom....and I'm probbly gonna agree with that. I don't hear the 70s 'sound' yet. Maybe later?? Sounds more like Revenge to me. Maybe all the 70s talk is referring to the songwriting / arrangements? Anyway....sounding great so far.....

But i think Sonic Boom sounded better. And 60000?! They cant be that happy with those numbers. Its a decline with almost 50000 since Sonic Boom.
But you have to remember that Sonic Boom was a deal with Walmart, and i think that helped the first week sales. A deal for Monster wasnt to be since the 700k Walmart bought of Sonic Boom hasnt been reached and probably never will be.

Exactly. Half a tribute band can join the current likes of Journey, Styx, Thin Lizzy and whoever else uses new members to replace old. Here's the difference though... take Journey for example... the new guy on vocals doesn't pretend to be Steve Perry.

I know different line-ups doesn't make a difference in a group like Yes for example, who have had a roster of members a mile long in their career or Black Sabbath with Dio at the helm (which fans enthusiastically accepted) but it doesn't seem to work for Kiss that much as they can never ever avoid the comparison to the original lineup. I guess its because people have or had a more vested interest in Kiss.

I think Monster is a really great album. Kiss is basically the only rock n roll band I like, because they have always had one foot planted in metal.

I usually dislike simple music, like ac dc and blues bands, because every song sound exactly the same. But that's not the case with Kiss. They manage, somehow, to keep it interesting.

I probably liked sonic boom better, but the new one is close. There is a lot on monster that reminds me of Creatures of the Night, including the drum sound. I think they did a great job, and I'm sure it will grow to be even better with time.

Happy they're still around. How many rock bands from the 70's still release kick ass albums?

Why all the hate for their success here? I can understand if you dont care for their 'brand' of rock, but c'mon, there aren't many rock and metal acts charting anymore. Back in the 80's, the charts here in the US were dominated by rock, metal, and country acts. Now it's all top 40, rap, and hip hop.

Pretty soon, its all going to be gone.

For those of you who bought and love it, great keep the Kiss train rolling and I hope one day, any day, they release another cd in the vein of "Destroyer". BSlash, you mentioned Journey. HardAttack, I realize there are more talented than Peter Criss, or Ace Frehley, but they were KiSS. There are guys in GNR now that can play technically better than Slash, but they aren't GnR...but I guess Peter is expendable...its 2012, soon, Paul will be expendable, and he'll replace himself. But will it be KiSS, of course not. But if Paul endorses it, KISS Army will follow their marching orders and buy in.

this new KiSS music is weak. You have to really try hard to find merit in it. yes, the riffs of R&ROver and Destroyer are over, so is 1976.

Peter CANNOT play anymore! HE IS ALL DONE!!! NEVER TO PLAY AGAIN!!!! He was losing it during the first farewell tour a decade ago. Ace is fun and all that but now he is sloppy as shit. I don't think he could play half the songs on Monster. I think his recent youtube clips are aweful, ans I consider myself a fan. Maybe the people who long for Ace and Peter are tone deaf because they seem to be the only ones who hate this new cd.
