STEVE HARRIS Doesn't Think IRON MAIDEN Has Another 10 Years Left - Oct. 15, 2012
John Doran of The Quietus recently conducted an interview with IRON MAIDEN bassist Steve Harris. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

The Quietus: Normally, side projects seem to get cranked out in six months down time but "British Lion" must have the longest gestation period of any side project album ever.

Harris: Probably yeah. [laughs] We've actually taken longer to get this album out than GUNS N' ROSES took with "Chinese Democracy". You say side projects are usually done in a six-month period but I don't get that amount of time available to me, unfortunately. As most people realize, I'm probably the busiest one in MAIDEN and there's always stuff going on. It would be a lie to say this album was done at a leisurely pace even… it was done at a snail's pace, a little bit here and a little bit there. But that's how it had to happen.

The Quietus: Are you going to play live?

Harris: I'd love to play the album live, I think we have to wait and see what the reaction is like first though, I never take anything for granted. I'd love to start with some club shows in key cities in Europe and then see how we go. Obviously it would be really weird because I know we haven't played any clubs for years.

The Quietus: When was the last time you were actually phased by playing in front of an audience? You must be so used to big crowds now would you actually find it more frightening to play in front of an intimate audience… would the adrenaline be pumping more?

Harris: Well, I don't know for sure, but yeah, I can imagine that once you step outside of the MAIDEN comfort zone, then you don't know what to expect. I still do get a little bit nervous at the beginning of MAIDEN tours but that's mainly because of the new material. We will have rehearsed but you can rehearse until the cows come home and the first few shows will always be a little bit rusty. Once you're confident, it doesn't matter so much. I used to get more worried years ago with MAIDEN about whether people were going to turn up or not. It's different now. I may not expect every single show to sell out and I never take everything for granted, but you still know you're going to get a certain amount of people.

The Quietus: Obviously, in IRON MAIDEN you're all really fit, you play football, the gigs themselves are obviously workouts. Is there any reason why you can't keep on doing this for another ten years?

Harris: I don't know about ten years, but I think we've certainly got another five years in us but it's hard to say. As you get older it gets doubly hard to keep yourself fit and in shape. We do work really hard on doing that. It's important to us. We'd be selling ourselves and everyone else short if we didn't, so we do look after ourselves. It does get tougher. I don't play football much anymore, but I play a lot of tennis. Partly because I've had so many problems with my back that I can only play the odd match here or there. Unfortunately, it's five years since I've played a full season of football and that's something that I miss a lot, but I had to make a decision.

The Quietus: Given how abrasive heavy metal is with image, sound, philosophy, lyrics etc, how do you explain its huge global appeal?

Harris: Because it really means something to the people who listen to it. It gives them an identity where they can feel part of it. And it's appealing that outsiders don't understand it. And if people from the outside do check it out properly, then I think a lot of people end up thinking, "You know, there's a lot more to this than meets the eye." And you know what? There is.

i think they have to start writing shorter songs, similiar to those from the Holy Trifecta in the early 80's.The 10 minute prog thing was good at first, but now it feels like it's long for the sense of long. I think Maiden was best when they made 4 or minute songs that were catchy and instantly memorable, not long and drawn out.

...I don't dislike their recent albums, but the songs are not nearly as memorable. Every songs starts with a mellow bass or guitar noodle, then a mid-tempo riff, etc.

But (being honest), it's fair to say their time is over. They had an incredible run in the early-to-mid 80's wherein they produced 5-6 of the greatest metal albums ever. I can never get enough of everything from IM to Powerslave. SIT is excellent as well.

For this alone, Maiden will always be one of the true greats of metal (in my book).

Heh, only took 2 posts to get to the complaining about the song structures of recent albums. I'm fine with it myself, always been drawn to the longer complex songs.

He is waiting to see how the reaction to his solo album is?

Im pretty sure the reaction is in...IT IS TERRIBLE...vocalist makes Blaze Bayley sound good...production makes the past few Maiden albums sound amazing

So hopefully that will mean Steve will not be touring with his solo band and will get into the studio with Maiden asap!

It sucks to hear that, but he's most likely correct.

Nicko would be 70 by then, and it's not like he's Charlie Watts. It's gotta be quite a workout playing a massive kit like that, especially with his single-bass drum technique.

It's still amazing how hard Steve plays onstage given his back issues. Gotta give the guy a shitload credit for that.

It'll be a sad day when Maiden call it quits. Hopefully that'd open the door to a new Bruce solo album/tour though, which can only be a good thing.

It really Sucks when our music heroes get old, but time stops for no one. Hopefully Maiden can still make new music if they decide on calling touring quits.

Most rock/metal bands couldn't image playing at 50 back when they were in their 20's. They get older and still love playing so they keep on. Hopefully, he'll change his mind when that time comes.

Not that I would see it, but I don't dis-like the Solo record so much. It's o.k., and I'm glad he did it, there a good bit of decent material, things that MAIDEN, for example, wouldn't do so well.

Anyway, he's an inspiration to me and us all as Metal fans, that says a lot, even after he hangs up the guitar.

Meanwhile, to say that MAIDEN should have retired 15 years ago, is absurd. There's been 4 great MAIDEN albums that kept me rockin' and rollin' for that time period. Besides, The Final Frontier is a bad-a** Lp. If you don't like anything from that, you're prob. on the wrong article, here.

Yeah, Iron Maiden will never be a distant memory to those of us who have been playing their music since they started. It's in our blood now, our DNA. We'll just keep playing their albums after they retire and until we die.

It says the same thing but the headline is way more pessimistic. It makes one go 'that's it, I gotta go see them on their next tour before they hang it up'.

Which is what I'm gonna do, still...

Bands like Maiden and Motorhead are getting older. It's sad to think of a day when they won't be around but it's inevitable. Just be grateful they are still here right now.

Nicko will determine when they call it a day. They've said time and again they won't replace him, and he's by far the oldest member of the group as well as the one who needs the most physical ability.

Bruce could go another 15-20 years easily, but maybe not with Maiden.

It's impossible to speculate about how long a band will last. I think most of us agree that 20 years ago, the thought of 50 year old Maiden running around on stage seemed utterly laughable. But now, it all seems quite different. They're still kicking ass, and they might be kicking the same asses 10 and even 15 years from now.

so why do these bands keep dangling that in front of everyone, that they're quitting very soon. On the BNW Tour, that I went to in Columbia, MD., they said they didn't know how many more tours they could do, what with Dave getting on near 50 and so forth. That was 10 freakin' years ago. I know that you just never know what's around the corner 3, 4 or 5 years, but KISS retired in the 90's, right? Anyways, maybe after all, they don't want anyone to be overly surprised when they do call it a day. I can see that, try to spare the sad news, people. btw, the Steve Harris CD isn't unlistenable to me, though I know nobody here wants to here that, so who cares, people were expecting something too much like Super-MAIDEN or some sh*t, ha! It's o.k., to me. I listen to it some now and then. Out!

I remember being a teen and a guitarist friend of mine used to call them Iron FUCKING Maiden (cause they rule) which always made me laugh. Steve Harris is just amazing... how does he play those triplets with his right hand fingers through measure after measure and never gets tired????? It's inhuman I tell you!

Still a great live band, just saw them. Very cool. It's best they go out on top, and that means fairly soon. Maybe one final album with shorter guitar driven catchy songs like vintage maiden? But it better be fuckin good.

Brave new world: 8.5/10
Dance of death: 6.5/10
Matter of life: 4/10 in running for worst maiden record ever. First half is nearly unlistenable, awkward, weak guitars, weak melodies, shitty production. If it wasnt for Benjamin the album would be a throwaway

Final frontier: 6.5/10

Time for them to pull up their socks in the studio, or stop making new albums.

Still love maiden though. Easy to forgive since they rule live.
