BLACK SABBATH Recording With RICK RUBIN, Planning To Tour Australia Next Spring - Oct. 14, 2012
During an appearance on this past Friday's (October 12) edition of the "Merrick & The Highway Patrol" show, which airs on Australia's long-running rock station Triple M, Ozzy Osbourne's wife/manager Sharon was asked about BLACK SABBATH's current status and whether Australian heavy metal fans are going to see the band touring the country anytime soon.

"Of course you are," Sharon replied (see video below). "[BLACK SABBATH are] in the studio right now with [producer] Rick Rubin recording. And they are going to be touring here in the spring of next year. Definitely."

Original BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi, singer Ozzy Osbourne and bassist Geezer Butler performed live together for the first time in seven years on May 19, playing an intimate show at the 3,800-person O2 Academy in SABBATH's hometown of Birmingham, England. The show, which served as a warm-up for the group's appearance at the following month's Download festival, was laced with emotion and drama: it was the first live appearance for Iommi since being diagnosed with cancer, and it was the first with stand-in drummer Tommy Clufetos, making the split official between founding drummer Bill Ward and the rest of SABBATH.

Iommi, Osbourne and Butler discussed their new album in a video interview posted at NME.com. The three musicians are working with producer Rick Rubin on their first recording project together in 34 years, with Osbourne saying, "We've written about 15 songs so far. Whether they all get on the album, I don't know. We just keep on writing." Osbourne also dropped a clue about the set's title, hinting, "Next year, 2013, is a good clue to what we're going to call the album."

As for how Rubin influenced the band's approach to writing together again, Butler explained, "He sat us down, put the first album on and said 'listen to this', imagine it's 1969, you've just done that, what would you do next?"

Iommi added, "It's taken on the flavor of the old stuff in the way we put things together, but with a different look on it."

The project suffered a blow earlier this year when Iommi was diagnosed with cancer, although he said that playing the warm-up show in Birmingham, was a boost to his spirits. "It was great," he said. "Going through what I've gone through over the past year has been like living in a different world — being onstage and to get that (reaction from the fans) is just fantastic, it really boosts you up."

BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward announced earlier this year that he was declining to join his former bandmates for its scheduled 2012 dates, as well as the recording of a new album, due to a contractual dispute.

He also allegedly had his lawyers direct SABBATH to remove him from photos of the band posted at the official BLACK SABBATH web site "so as to not give the public the wrong impression about his involvement in the current BLACK SABBATH lineup," according to a statement issued by the band's publicist.

Geezer Butler issued a lengthy retort at his own web site, writing that Ward "hadn't told any one of us he was having contractual problems, and frankly those things are worked out between our representatives, and never between the four of us let alone in public."

Butler added that the band did not expect to make a lot of money from its Download appearance and planned to donate the proceeds from the Birmingham gig, saying, "Apparently, this wasn't acceptable to Bill's representatives, they wanted an amount that was so unrealistic that it seemed to have been a joke."

In addition to Download, the members of SABBATH played at Lollapalooza in early August in Chicago, their only U.S. gig. The rest of the scheduled SABBATH tour dates were played by Ozzy and billed as "Ozzy & Friends."

I tend to think so, too. It's just such a shame that shit couldn't be worked out so that all four original members could record this new Sabbath record. Who knows what's going on there... At any rate, I'm psyched that they're recording with Rick Rubin. Rick did a great job co-producing the new, very killer ZZ Top album 'La Futura'.

I hope you're feeling better, Tony! Hang in there, man. You will: You ARE The Iron Man! Cheers. Peace.

Really? Because I guarantee you this record will be recorded in ProTools or a very similar DAW.

If it's recorded digitally, mixed digitally, and mastered digitally, you're not going to "enjoy the sound" more just because you bought the vinyl.

Agreed, Rubin is fucking terrible choice - he just a deaf old fart who can only ruin the real natural sound. New BS album probably will be compressed as fuck like some metallica's "shit magnetic" or like any other record which he produced in a last 10-15 years. But thats nowadays seems like a producing style - killing music with extreme compression...

Hail mighty Black Sabbath!!
Fuck Rubin and loudness wars!!!

Steel Panther...yep, Steel Panther played to sold out stadium shows...not bars, clubs or house of blues crap...venues had to shifted to meet demand and additional shows added...

and our dollar is better than yours at the moment, which means more $$$$$$$ for the bands too...

IOMMI is god. I did buy the "Who Cares" project with Deep Purple's Ian G. but was disapointed by the double album. There are really only 2 "new" tracks and the rest is a mishmash of things of various interest, but mostly forgettable content. The Dio track is always good though. But that's as far as it goes for me... Not as great as I hoped for.

Re: SABBATH, really looking forward to it. Period. Too bad for Bill W.

no matter what they do people will be dissapointed. If you want to listen to vintage black sabbath play electric wizard or sheavy, the singer sounds just like ozzy. I fooled a lot of people saying sheavy was the new ozzy cd. Its good news that tony, one of the all time greats is still alive and making music. Every day is a gift.

Well, what came right after the first album originally was fucking Paranoid. No way in hell they can top that. Just coming close to it at their ages would be amazing.

With new Priest and new Sabbath coming out next year they should seriously consider putting on a handful of megashows, ala "The Big Four". But, make it the "Three Giants". Sabbath - Priest - Maiden

These dudes can bring it on any given night, but long tours are getting to be out of the question.

Sure it's okay. Iron Man and War Pigs are overplayed too. But, you gotta keep it in context. When that album came out there was NOTHING like it. Even the first Black Sabbath album was blown away by the nastiness and aggression of the second album.

On almost the same wavelength: if they really want the right drummer--if they can't get their sh*t together with Bill--then they should get Des Kensel of High On Fire. He'd do the job right...

Sorry, Tommy Clufetos.

And you will all buy their new album when it comes out and secretly love it while you come on here and talk shit about it because Bill Ward isn't on it. Bill can't drum anymore. It's sad but true. I understand Bill's pride being hurt by only drumming on a couple of songs live and somebody else drumming the rest of the show but he should understand as long as Tony and Geezer are there it's going to be considered Black Sabbath to everyone else.

I have mixed feelings on this.

On one hand, I owe Sabbath everything for helping to create the genre of music that is so important to me. If I need to explain this any further, then you'll never understand.

On the other, we were told it was the original lineup, and now it isn't. I don't know about you, but I have had more than enough of the bait-and-switch crap this world has to offer. There are dozens/hundreds of bands that are working far too hard for my dollars and attention nowadays to write them off in favor of this circus.

Tony, Ozzy, Geezer... I love you guys. Nothing can ever change that, but as of this minute I think I'll pass.

No matter how good this album is, it will suck. And we all know it.

Bill's not there and even if he was, he can't play like he used to or the way he'd need to to make this record sound right.

Ozzy's voice is gone. Has been for a while now and it just keeps getting worse. They'll use every studio trick imaginable to make him sound right, but it won't really be Ozzy. It will be a tired, old man talking through Auto-Tune.

Tony is ill. He's supposedly better, but even if getting healthy is his number one priority, as it should be, there's no way the looming specter of cancer isn't going to affect his performance.

And poor Geezer. Who can still play/write like he's 25 suffers because 1) he won't be playing off Bill Ward and 2) Sharon will refuse to utilize him as a lyricist. Something else they'd need to do to make a classic sounding Sabbath album.

The Great Plastic Hag will demand Ozzy "writes" the lyrics so she receives that fat lyricist royalty check. Meanwhile, part of that check goes to whoever they've hired to write Ozzy's lyrics this year.

No matter what, this album will be a fucking joke. What's worse is fans won't want to believe it so badly they'll actually buy it.

We should just be happy with those first 6 albums. The first 3 are perfect and the next three are also amazing. It's a remarkable run for any band. Especially one as important as Sabbath.

But I still think Sacred Reich should do a new record, so what do I know?
